Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.
Let’s talk about raisins.
I know. Gross. I can barely even think of a raisin without cringing.
I’m just not into them. I can’t chew something that is labeled plump and shriveled at the same time. I like the words plump and shriveled to pertain to warm, cuddly and loving grandmas who knit blankets and scarves and drink hot cocoa. Not my food.
Sometimes I accidentally eat a raisin when I shovel handfuls of salty trail mix into my mouth. Other times I accidentally eat a raisin when I’m picking every single chocolate chip out of a bag of trail mix. Occasionally I bite into a warm, gooey cookie expecting to find a melted chocolate chip ribbon, only to discover… a raisin. Then I cry. Ew.
Sometimes I can snack on one or two raisins, but I’m really just… judging them.
Luckily… these cookies have nothing to do with raisins. Lovely, right?
Instead of raisins, I stuffed thick oatmeal cookies with a boatload of chocolate chips. Large and in charge cookies. I underbaked them slightly, resulting in a super chewy and gooey cookie with the perfect chocolate ribbons I crave. Then I ate them. Almost all of them. They complete me.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cups rolled oats
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 1/4 cups chocolate chips
- optional: 1- 2 tablespoons milk if dough is crumbly
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Beat butter and sugars with an electric mixer until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mixing well until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon with the mixer on medium speed. Beat in oats. Mix until dough comes together. Add in 1 tablespoon milk if the dough is crumbly. If dough is still crumbly, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it comes together. Fold in chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Remove dough from fridge and roll into big 1 1/2 inch balls. Set on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Lightly press down on dough to flatten it. Bake at 375 for 9-11 minutes.

Cookies are a food group unto themselves. One of my favorite things. Your’s look wonderful. The pictures made me crazy hungry!!
Thanks Michelle!
Mmmm–I always underbake my cookies too! I am a self-avowed anti-crunchy-cookie girl. True story.
P.S. Of *course* these cookies are healthy. They have oats. Duh.
Yum! I love oatmeal in my cookies. And being a chocoloholic, I’ll basically eat anything with chocolate in it. :-)
raisins… ewwww… i hate them, too. chocolate chips in oatmeal cookies – now that’s the ONLY way to go!
Thank you!!!! I despise raisins in cookies (as well as by themselves or in any other form). Like you, I pick them all out of cookies so I’m ecstatic to see a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe. They look delicious!
I don’t hate raisins as much as you, but I do definitely prefer my cookies without them! These look fab!
i love raisins!!!! although I do love my chocolate chips too!! these look fabulous!
THOSE look absolutely perfect! And moist, and chewy..and I want one :)
Aaaaaand the craving starts. Your pictures just SOLD me on this recipe!
One of my best friends loves oatmeal raisin cookies. They remind me too much of health food. I prefer my cookies with chocolate, so I can be sure they aren’t secretly good for me or anything like that.
I love raisins in cookies, but I like chocolate more. These sound like home!
No raisins??? I’ve gotta say, though, you’ve combined my two favorite cookies, now you’ve just gotta add the peanut butter!
I love oats in cookies..all cookies…so good
Mmmmm. These are some of my favorite cookies! I love, love, love anything made with oatmeal… But it’s also my downfall, because I can ALMOST convince myself that ANYTHING made with oatmeal is healthy… therefore I can eat 3 or 4 more.
There isn’t any flaw in that logic, is there? Nope. I didn’t think so either. =)
I think that I am going to make these but use BUTTERSCOTCH chips instead. I’ve been looking for a good oatmeal cookie recipe to make Oatmeal Scotchies. They remind me of childhood. I wouldn’t touch oatmeal raisin with a ten foot pole but when my Dad made Scotchies I was in heaven.
YUM!
Raisins are the devils’ work….I have despised them since being FORCED to eat them by the teacher in my daycare when I was in the 3rd grade…so I got wise the next year and declared “I’m allergic”. This worked for many years! Friends and Family knew not to offer, bribe, nor hide, this sham cousin of a grape (which I LOVE) in my food. I can smell them in cooked food before a bite is ever eaten. I have had people try to pass “goldens” off as not a raisin, they get the dagger eyes….did I say I hate raisins? The irony is I sooooooooooo enjoy wine! Red, White, Blush, Sparkling,……
Hahahaha I love that you said you were allergic.
I was doing all fine and dandy with substaining from chocolate today until after my supper. Well there goes that idea!! These cookies look so moist and amazinnggg.. I know what I’m making today after work, thank you for sharing Jessica :)
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies are my FAVORITE cookie! I just love them!!! Sometimes I add chocolate chips and raisins. You can also grind the oatmeal which makes them even chewier.
Raisins should not be anywhere near my cookies. That will totally crush my cookie craving. Oats and chocolate..much better combo. Throw some peanut butter in these cookies for extra health factor..you know, protein.
I refuse to make oatmeal raisin cookies. Not that I’m opposed to raisins, because I’m not, but because chocolate chips are SO MUCH BETTER.
That is pretty much my reasoning too.
oats + cookie (defnitely) = healthy :)
I completely agree – oats in cookies makes them healthy!
yes!!! right there with ya… love oatmeal cookies but hate raisins! I kind of feel like I should have grown out of it by now since everyone else seems to like them, so occasionally I try one and… nope, still gross.
This is exactly what I do! I am not a raisin fan so I just leave the raisins out and make yummy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies! Why would you ever add raisins to them in the first place?!? I am currently 30 weeks pregnant with twin boys and was just craving oatmeal and chocolate (odd I know). I have a feeling these may be coming out of my oven at some point today!
How exciting Whitney!!
I’m a fan of raisins but I do agree that chocolate chips are better suited for oatmeal cookies… and trail mix…and anything for that matter. I would give raisins to my first grade students as a snack because it came in those cute tiny boxes…but it was all a hoax, the thought of them squished up in the box sounded disgusting. Hmmm.. I guess I’m not so much of a fan of raisins afterall. Thanks for making me think twice. Whew.
Those cute tiny boxes are kind of cute. I’d probably eat broccoli if they put it in there.
THIS is the way to eat oatmeal cookies! I love oats in cookies but can’t stand cooked raisins. Nothing would ruin a cookie-moment like biting into a raisin.
Um Oatmeal cookies are my favorite. Add in some chocolate chips..and I might have died and gone to heaven!
I hate raisins too but LOVE chocolate chips oatmeal cookies! Yum!
you and me are the same – NO Raisins in cookies! Ever!
It’s kind of against my beliefs to bake cookies and NOT put chocolate chips in them. I mean, if you’re going to bake some cookies, bake some cookies (in your over-sized grandpa sweater and all). :) Pretty sure you would agree.
Obviously.
Worst thing ever: taking a bite of a warm, gooey cinnamon roll and biting down on a raisin. Disgusting.
I’ve never even heard of raisins in cinnamon rolls. Bleh.
Discovering that something I thought was a raisin (in a cookie, scone, bread, etc.) is really a chocolate chip is one of the five best things that could EVER possibly happen to me. Inversely, thinking something is chocolate chip happiness and realizing it’s raisin can and has ruined my day. I feel ya.
Mmm, those cookies look awesome. I love oatmeal cookies, and although I do like raisins, chocolate chips always win :D
These are absolutely my favorite type of cookie! I love the oatey chocolatey goodness of them!!!
I just KNEW you were my food soulmate!! I hate hate hate raisons too. I’m like you — I can maybe eat a couple before I’m like, what the hell am I putting in my mouth? BLECH! Weird thing is, I love grapes. I’m a strange one.
Anyhow, these look insanely good and as usual, I’m adding the recipe to my list to try in the very very very near future. :)
I love grapes too!
These are my favorite kind of cookies-can’t wait to try your version! (and agreed, raisins are just gross).
Chocolate > Raisins
ALWAYS. These look delicious… homemade cookies are unbeatable!
Pretty sure all the oats in these means I can eat these for breakfast and not feel horrible about myself. :)
I’m SO with you on the raisins. Why would anyone want to mess up a delicious cookie with a withered grape? It boggles my mind. Now you’ll have to excuse me, I need to go wipe the bacon grease off my keyboard. Eating BLTs at 9pm while reading food blogs probably wasn’t a good idea! (But I know you can appreciate it!)
I 100% agree with you! Rasins are awful. They don’t belong anywhere near oatmeal cookies.
While I do like raisins, I like chocolate way better! I actually had a massive craving for cookies last night and baked some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies myself. I added a few toffee chips as well, and some almond meal to bump up the protein.
I was just about to make oatmeal cookies for my bf, and I started to peruse your blog as I often do. Weird that you you posted this recipe. Actually, I call it God-sent. Except for that my bf prefers ONLY chewy raisings in his oatmeal cookies, and I ONLY prefer chocolate chips. Sigh. This oughta be interesting how they turn out. :D
Do half and half!
Okay, I just have to say it:
I LOVE RAISINS!!!!!
I can’t help myself around a bag of them.. I just go and go and go and then my hands are all sticky and I start to worry if my I’m turning all pruney.
BTW. These look delicious!
I sort of love your passion for raisins.
I hate going to a bakery and see that all of the oatmeal cookies have raisins… oatmeal chocolate chip cookies need to be in my mouth right now!
Cannot WAIT to try these! Chewy cookies are my FAVORITE! (especially those without raisins!)
you should get this t-shirt

Um… I should!
guh i loathe raisins too! nothing worse than biting into a cookie to discover that it was not a chocolate chip that also goes for thinking its a macadamia nut and turns out to be white chocolate, what a let down.
i’m not usually into baking but i think i’ll try these!
I cannot wait to try these! I am always looking for a good chewy oatmeal cookie without raisons!
I love that you’ve substituted chocolate chips for the raisins! These cookies look fantastic :)
You’ve just described my exact relationship with raisins. THANK YOU for using chocolate instead!!!
