Tuesday Things.
1. How much longer can I get away with posting boring pictures of trees? I hope forever. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed fall this much, it’s like the colors have been changing for weeks but not dropping from the trees. My heart might explode. Right about now I’m wishing I was back in first grade when I had to do a leaf project that I waited to do until the last minute and then through a major tantrum about.
2. I have to say that the best part about Grey’s Anatomy lately is that Mr. Feeny is on… and that he is still doling out words of wisdom like he was in his Boy Meets World days. I relied on a lot of that advice. Heavily.
3. Let me tell you a little story. I grew up never eating salad. I mean, NEVER. Obviously, I blame pretty much everything in my life on that fact. Then one day, I had a caesar salad. It made salad doable for me, even if it did need atrocious amounts of cheese and croutons. I mean, I like a little salad with my cheese and bread, if you get my drift. Soooo… grilled pumpkin caesar salads? I’m so infatuated with it I’m starting a club. No really.
4. My husband and I ate an entire pizza one afternoon last weekend and thought we were going to die. I think as I hit 30 it should become important for me to not continue to eat like a man. I mean, do I need to be a lady or something?
5. Speaking of mistakes, 32 mistakes we’re all going to make… my personal favorite is #10. Right? “Because of… reasons.”
6. And speaking of ladies, I think I’ve mentioned this before, but in my old age I have to say that I absolutely loooooooathe when somebody calls me a “lady.” Like when the four year old in the grocery store points to me and says “mom, why is that lady buying a lot of ice cream?” Hello. I’m going to go curl up and die now. And scream I’M NOT A LADY! WHAT DON’T YOU GET ABOUT IT? I don’t need your judgement, young child.
7. Last night I was desperately searching for the hummus in my fridge and after losing patience and not finding it, I grabbed the tortilla chips I wanted and there… was the hummus. Sitting right next to the tortilla chips. Like, not refrigerated. Like, placed back there from the last time I ate the snack. Apparently I’m losing my mind. Oh and I also discovered month-old turkey meatballs in the fridge that I thought my husband had consumed. I thought wrong. Not a good thing.
8. I have been totally flipping over these marshmallows since yesterday. Um, don’t they just scream ME?!
9. Alright, I just can’t take it because I sit inside my house and laugh hysterically at this list of 40 ways to stay fat forever… almost every single day. I need to get out more?
10. I meant to share this before, but I found this bad lip reading video of the first debate lightly hysterical. Is that inappropriate? Oh well. If so, watch this video that my brother’s school made for their homecoming week. Like the teachers made it. Like some teachers that I had. You know when you have that really-funny-but-want-to-die-because-you’re-so-uncomfortable feeling? Yeah. If you don’t know what I mean, just go watch an episode of Girls. Heck, watch a few clips of Girls. And wait, when did teachers get younger than me? Clearly having a huge breakdown this week.
11. Why is every Ryan Gosling movie so perfect… even when it isn’t?
12. What is your favorite place to eat in NYC? Yes, I’ve been there multiple times but I’d like to eat my entire way through this trip. Like… that’s all I do. I’m sure I’ll just be delightful when I return home.
110 Comments on “Tuesday Things.”
Eat at Public in Soho. The owners are from Pittsburgh. Great food and awesome atmosphere!
Go to Alice’s Tea Cup (3 locations – UES, UWS, midtown east). It’s an Alice in Wonderland-themed restaurant that has ahmazing food. For brunch, they have french toast bread pudding. Oh yes. You can actually buy their cookbook.
Best cupcakes are definitely at Buttercup bakery. You can also get giant slices of cake there. It was started by some of the people who started Magnolia, but it’s way better.
If you want something savory (how odd), I love Fig & Olive. There are a few locations.
Levain Bakery. (near Central Park) You will not regret it.
I second the Alice’s Tea Cup experience. I went one and we treked all the way across the city to go another day but the wait was an hour and a half. Totally worth every bite.
Also I highly recommend the Corner Shop Cafe. Its on the corner of Broadway and Bleeker in Soho, and I go there at least twice every visit. (Also I think its important to mention, that as many times as I’ve been there, I’ve only ever gotten the burger..)
I love the list of 32 things! Ha you always find such great list links ;) And I cannot stop taking pictures of trees either– in Tuscaloosa, Alabama we haven’t reached our official peak but I am hoping soon! Love your “Tuesday Things” by the way!
Haven’t been but I freakishly research it for the day I finally go, I’ve heard multiple great reviews for laconda verde, plus lots of celeb sightings which is always a good thing in my books!
Frank on 2nd Ave and 5th Street. Go there for a meal of gigantic, amazing, BURRATA CHEESE appetizer and lots of wine. Heaven.
I also don’t like lady, but what’s worse is “M’am”. Who the H is “M’am”? That’s a good way to make me glance over my shoulder and keep walking. Last time I checked I’m not 80 years old thankyouverymuch.
Yay, Tuesday Things! I am so basic when I visit NYC that I just make sure to hit up Gray’s Papaya. So, so good.
Unrelated: I stated watching Homeland this week because of you. I’m already obsessed.
OMG, NY food things!
1. Big Gay Ice Cream: Get a Salty Pimp and a Rue MacClanahan. You WILL NOT regret it.
2. The Meatball Shop (self explanatory)
3. Luke’s Lobster (The best freaking lobster or crab or shrimp rolls you can get)
4. Hit up Smorgasberg – it is food heaven (Like, 100 food trucks in one place kind of heaven.)
5. Yerba Buena for some amazing cocktails. (I’m partial to the East Village location and the Poquito Picante cocktail)
HAVE FUNNN!
Hey Jess – re: NYC. You have to try the burger with roquefort and shoestring fries at The Spotted Pig. The head chef, April Bloomfield, is a pork goddess. Yeah. I know. And then for dessert, the currants and cream ice cream from Van Leeuwen Ice Cream in Soho. They have a shop but I usually run screaming after their truck “Stop. Please. Last time, I swear”
It’s usually hard to find something not TGIFridays in Times Square but, if your’e there, check out Pie Face – its an australian meat pie shop that is baaanginnnn. Meat? Pie? Aussies?! Ok.
Have fun in NYC!
If there’s one thing I think that you – not any old person visiting NYC, but YOU, SPECIFICALLY – should try, it’s the brussels sprout and pancetta pizza at Motorino in East Village. Motorino already has the most fantastic crust , but that flavor combo is just…oh my. I know you’re sitting there going “Brussels sprouts on a pizza? Are you trying to kill me?” but trust me, IT WORKS. I have a feeling you will want to recreate this one at home.
Have an incredible time!
DEFINITELY levain bakery on the uws for their cookies. they were even featured on bobby flay’s showdown and (obviously) won. they are the best!!
I broke the 30 barrier 2 years ago and I HATE being called “lady”. It’s always kids or parents talking to kids, too. I used to work in this little local store and mom’s would always be like, “Stop doing that or that lady is gonna get you!” That is The. Worst. The bad lip synching video had me rolling. Thank you!!!
i like max brenner’s chocolate by the bald man. i go there every time i’m in nyc.
I second this!
Definitely Locanda Verde in Tribeca. Cafe Cluny in West Village for brunch. We are downtown people so that is where we stay. Balaboosta on Mulberry is fun.
That picture gave me goosebumps- I love fall!
Oh my gosh! Thank you! I’ve seriously been staring at that guy all season trying to figure out who he is. I even had a detailed conversation with my husband about it last week. Mr. Feeny! I can’t believe I didn’t realize that!
when i was studying for my cpa, going to school, and working full-time i went to go clean the house, KNOWING i just bought pine-sol the day before.. i couldn’t find it ANYWHERE, not even straggling in the car. i gave up my search, when to go make some food later on. and there in the refrigerator sat the pinesol. right next to the milk, just chilliin’.. literally. and i was only 22.. it was all downhill from there..
that is amazing.
Welcome to NYC! After living here for 7 years, I have eaten my way through some of the best restaurants in the city. I can’t stress this enough. This place is a must for Lunch / Brunch: Hundred Acres in SoHo. Make a reservation. I can’t speak highly enough about this place and I know you will try recreating at least one item on their menu for your blog. It’s shabby chic decorated, but your husband could still wear a no-sleeved shirt here as it’s anything goes :) Please…PLEASE…PLEASE!!! Don’t even look at the menu. Just order: Goat Cheese-Thyme Bread Pudding two poached eggs, warm spinach salad, lemon butter. Alice and Wonderland has nothing on this place!! Now we’re talking!
I would recommend Mercadito also for Sunday brunch, did I mention all you can drink mimosas? Get the pineapple; all their fruit is blended fresh and who doesn’t like bottomless bevies?! 179 Ave B between 11th & 12th streets. Their dinner menu is equally as impressive and you can take your hubby to St. Dymphna’s on St Mark’s Place for the best guinness in NYC for pre-dinner drinks. (You’re welcome in advance!!)
If you are feeling Italian, one of the best I have found to date is Il Bagatto. The atmosphere is dark lit and romantic. Their regular menu is a bit limited, but you want to go for the specials anyway. They’re amazing.
One more dinner recommendation: Desantos in the West Village. Just take a look at the menu, enough said!
Schmorgasburg–a previous recommendation post is a lot of fun. Take the East River ferry to Williamsburg (it leaves from 34th street and the East River). You’ll get the best views of the city and eliminate any subway travel. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Brooklyn Brewery, Berry Park (head up to the rooftop!) and Radegast Hall (for the most incredible German beer, giant pretzals and sausages).
Have the best time!!!
Please don’t stop posting pretty tree pictures! I miss the Fall in Pittsburgh so much!
NYC – so much food, so little time. If you happen to find yourself hungover, or just in the mood to revisit your college ramen noodle eating days, go to Ippudo. It’s like ramen noodles on crack. It’s so amazing. And while you’re there make sure to have some pork buns. they’re gods gift to the planet!!!
Any chocolate lover HAS to eat at Max Brenner! (www.maxbrenner.com)
Last time I visited NYC I had the most incredible sandwich and Birch Beer at Chelsea Market at the Milk Bar. I also will sell my soul for a Cobb Wrap from Earl of Sandwich.
If you want some really great non tradtional pizza options visit PALA. They even have a banging gluten free crust.
Enjoy!
Confession: I eat like a man too! My husband calls is out-steaking him. Whenever I order a bigger/stronger beer, I am out-steaking him. When I order and end up eating an entire New York Strip Steak and he can barely finish his filet, I out-steaked him. It’s ok, no shame!
Wait til TJMaxx gives you the senior discount (WITHOUT even asking you if you’re 55 or over!) I wasn’t sure whether to be offended (at the young age of 47, knowing that I don’t really look 55) or to just say thank you and walk out with my discount! ;)
So, was that you good looking brother on the bus in that video? Gangnam has overtaken our world, and will soon be at my daughter’s wedding reception next Thursday! I need to figure out how to dance it.. quick!
The Little Owl in the West Village (easiest to get in for brunch… meatball sliders and french toast!)
Jacques Torres for chocolate. (several locations, including Chelsea Market. Best chocolate chip cookies.)
ABC Kitchen
Keste or Luzzo for pizza
ABC KITCHEN IS HEAVEN.
Salted Caramel Ice cream, popcorn and fudge? That sundae was made for a gal’s time of the month. just saying. apologies for the TMI!
Oh goodness, and Momofuku Milk Bar… it is so you. Crack pie, compost cookies, pretzel truffles.
Going to New York City? One place you must… I repeat, MUST eat at…
Cafe Blossom. Amazing vegan food. Seriously amazing. I promise your husband will love it. I’m not kidding. If he doesn’t, I’ll personally send you an apology letter.
Try delcious Ethiopian grub at Queen of Sheba (46th and 10th Ave) or Turkish food at Turkuaz (100th and Broadway.
Check out my friend’s NYC dining out blog which illustrates all the best eats we’ve found in the city – http://fattykat.com/
HAVE FUN
Joseph Leonard in the West Village. Go for brunch, they have amazing crispy brussels with sriracha, and the staff is super friendly.
You should eat at S’Mac! (See delicious picture here! — http://wildeinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-perfect-weekend.html) Fall is the perfect time for macaroni and cheese!
I fully support the recommendations for Motorino and LeVain Bakery. Warm chocolate chip walnut cookies? Ummm, yes please!
If you’re in the SoHo area in the morning, you HAVE to make your way to Balthazar Bakery (not the restaurant). They have the. best. donuts. of my life. Sugar, Chocolate, Pistachio and last week they had a Banana Nut donut that made self-control go out the window. Their other pastries are also amazing but their donuts can’t be missed when they’re freshly baked.
I don’t want to be a lady either. However, I keep telling my friends about this “lady who had a baby” and then I catch myself and say “well, I’m the same age as her…” but what do we call ourselves? Girl is too childish and woman/lady are too old! I end up picking girl….
Thought Catalog kills me. That 32 mistakes we’re all going to make list…number 15…TOTALLY. Where is Leo when you need him?
If you like ahhhhmazing margaritas and you like the most potent ones ever, hit up Cilantro (UES). It is the best southwestern food anywhere ever. I dream about those margaritas. Other essentials: Levain and Alice’s Tea Cup (especially the pumpkin scone). I know that NYC is the birthplace of cupcakes but I’m not really a fan of any of them there. Make a trek to Princeton, NJ to Bent Spoon. The greatest cupcakes and gelato ever. Trumps anything in New York and on any food show. Every trip to New York is planned around eating. Why else would I go? To see friends? Maybe. I prefer to stuff my face.
Please don’t stop the fall leaves photos. I.can’t.get.enough (especially since here in Texas we are still reaching 90 degrees with no fall leaves in sight!).
OH MY GOSH–we were just talking about the leaf project the other day. and yes, totally threw a tantrum whilst doing it!
umm you’re obviously going to Big Gay Ice Cream and Levain Bakery, right?
Doughnut plantttt. Though I feel like you surely must have been there!
being called “lady” is waaaaay better than being called “ma’am”. If that doesn’t make me feel old…
Go to Franny’s in Brooklyn. Or, if your timing is right, do the supper club at Haven’s Kitchen. it’s Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune fame. The price tag for their supper club is high, but trust me, it is SO worth it. We did it for Mike Anthony (Gramercy Tavern) and Franny’s. If you miss supper club, still go to Prune. Sooooo many great places. Swine and Red Farm (next door to one another) in the West Village…they are both amazing for distinct reasons.
Oh my goodness I am the exact same way when it comes to salads! There is not a way in the world someone could make me eat an ordinary salad, but sit a plate of caesar salad in my face and I’ll happily eat it in record time.
Try Norma’s for brunch at Le Parker Meridien in NYC! I went a few years ago and it was awesome. Probably considered a tourist trap, but delicious nonetheless. In case you need convincing, they have a chocolate waffle with peanut butter and toffee crunch filling.
I just went to NYC about a month ago to visit my sister, who lives in Manhattan. We went to an awesome Italian place (very well priced) called Crispo, which is near Union Square downtown. It was SO good, I think you would love it!
If you’re into really good, awesome vegan food, Candle 79 is another great option–but i’m sure thats slightly less up your alley ;)
Baked NYC, obviously! It is, without a doubt, one of the best bakeries. Also, Chelsea Market has so much amazing food – just SO much, you can spend an entire day there! The olive oil and sea salt vendor there also has bacon flavored items ;)
Mr. Feeny went to my college!!! It’s one of the shining stars I like to hang my hat on and will tell anyone who will listen! Haha.
Can I take your LADY and raise you a MA’AM?
I work for the military and have been called Ma’am on a near daily basis for the last 3 years. It never gets less painful!! NEVER.
John’s on Bleeker Street…tasty pizza!
Flex Mussels…delectable variety of mussel pots…their donuts are To DIE For!!!
first off, i die over your Tuesday things, i usually read them at work, and laugh out loud at my computer, and most of the time say hahah omg me too. Thanks for a great laugh while at work, it helps me get through my work week. p.s.your recipes are amazballs too! ;)
I live just outside NYC, but used to live in the burgh. My favorite places to eat are 1) Knickerbockers (near NYU, on University Pl; 2) Las Ramblas – tapas place at 170 W 4th St (Greenwich Village); and 3) Grand Szechuan on St. Mark’s Pl (East Village). You could also try Blue Smoke (Midtown) and Blue Water Grill (Union Square.
