the second trimester (…is over. OMG.)
Hi! From the looks of the above I should be taking nice long time cleaning up our bedroom at the moment but instead I’m writing a bunch of junk on the internet in the form of an annoyingly large block of text about what it’s like to be knocked up with horrible quality phone photos because I don’t have the energy to get into a forty minute fight with my husband on how to use the iphone camera. So I’m here! Run on sentences and all.
I realize that I haven’t written much of anything regarding pregnancy in the entire second trimester, and thankfully that’s because things have been totally normal. Well, and I’ve been swamped with work and life – which may contribute to things being normal. I’ve had approximately zero time to obsess which is fantastic for a headcase like myself. Like I don’t even know if I’ve been nesting. Would I know if I’m nesting? Maybe moving has prevented nesting or the nesting has been overshadowed by (sort of) unpacking and living in a new space and doing those things, which otherwise would be nesting?
I know. I make no sense. This is my life.
The pregnancy has gone by so so super fast. Besides those first few weeks when I was a ball of depression and felt like every day was a year long, it’s been FLYING. I’ve felt like my normal self for the most part, aside from a few moments where social interaction seems like the worst thing ever and I want to strangle anyone who speaks to me about anything. Apparently there is this thing called hormones?
But let’s see. Here are the highlights:
A few nights ago I looked at Eddie almost in tears and said… “I feel like we are never going to be able to go to the movies again at the drop of a hat.” He looked at me like I had ten heads and said “uhhhh, when do we ever go to the movies now? We go like maybe once a year.”
He is right. We never go. I’ve had mini freakouts over a few ridiculous things like that in relation to our lives changing. I look back and find it hilarious. All I can think of is Sweet Home Alabama and the scene YOU HAVE A BABY. IN A BAR.
Then I feel better.
We are still completely stumped on if they baby is a boy or a girl. I mean, not that we should know, but still. Remember back when I had all those boy dreams? I haven’t had any since and I’m sort of in girl-mode right now, thinking maybe it’s a girl. It feels ridiculous and so impersonal to call the baby “it” so sometimes I say “he” or “she” and then everyone around me is like OMG YOU SO KNOW WHAT YOU’RE HAVING AND YOU JUST SPILLED THE BEANS! YOU’RE LYING TO US.
No. We have no idea, we didn’t find out, we turned our heads during the sonogram. NO CLUE. Best surprise ever. If I’m lucky enough to have more kids I don’t think we will find out… like ever.
I will tell you that one day I walked into our room and Eddie looked at me and said “so I don’t want to sound like an asshole and obviously my first hope is for a healthy baby, but lately I’ve really been hoping we have a girl at some point.” I’m like WHAT. Who are you? For years he’s talked about how he would be scared to have a girl and not know what to do. It was super adorable. Then he’s also had moments like that about boys. I want both boys and girls and just have lost all notions on if this babe is a he or she. I cannot wait to find out. If I was ten years younger I’d want to have like six kids.
(Eddie probably needed the Heimlich after reading that.
Since we still don’t know, I haven’t bought one piece of clothing or anything. On Friday I did buy some nursery furniture (and a ridiculously comfortable glider/rocker/chair thing), and ummm… thank goodness I did since it won’t be here until the beginning/middle of November. Other than that, we’ve still been trying to get settled in the new house (which is a freaking joke because, uh, hello – we won’t be settled forever since I’ve been home for about ten minutes all month) and figure things out here. If I start to come unglued over that, Eddie looks and me and shouts WOMEN USED TO BIRTH BABIES IN CAVES.
I need to write that on my head in sharpie then look in the mirror.
I have done a teeny bit of research on things like strollers and whatnot, which has mostly ended up in major meltdowns because why do people in 2014 have like 13 different strollers for one child? I’M SO CONFUSED. Please feel free to leave your input on strollers below – which will probably make me even more overwhelmed but I’ll still love you. I really REALLY love the idea of the UPPAbaby stroller that my brother’s fiancé told me about. I’m still looking into it and yes I realize it’s like Beyonce-priced. Apparently I’m carrying a Blue Ivy in my belly. (p.s. sidebar: please tell me you watched the Jay-Z/Bey concert special on HBO last night? UGH SO GOOD.)
My appetite is still weird as heck. I’m rarely hungry for anything but I feel the hunger once it gets bad – there just isn’t much I want to eat. I still always have granola bars with me because they are the quickest and best option. I do a ton of fruit, lots of apples and berries and bananas. At 22.5 weeks I felt like a bottomless pit, but it only lasted for two days and has never returned. I can’t eat nearly the amount I used to. I’ve loving hummus and those big fat sourdough pretzels for a snack. I drink a ton of water and kombucha – and need a few sips of carbonation here and there. Mostly in the form of the passionfruit la croix.
Otherwise… food is weird.
While we were on vacation in August, I realized that it’s nearly impossible to lie on the beach while pregnant. I couldn’t really be on my back for very long and obviously couldn’t lie on my stomach. Does that mean I should throw my body on it’s side? That’s weird and makes it difficult to read. The only way beach life was comfortable was with a chair.
I feel the baby move alllll the time now. It’s so wonderful. The crazy thing for me was that I didn’t feel it move the first time until almost 22 weeks. I was dying. First of all, to be honest, I was pissed and nervous. Many of my friends felt their babies move by week 16 or 18. I was sad that I had to wait so long. I felt like I was missing out. I was also still at the point where I was afraid to be happy and think it was REAL, even though we’d had the anatomy scan. I thought feeling movement would help my fears. My doctor said that it was most likely because I have an anterior placenta so I couldn’t feel movement until the kicks were a little stronger? And I know I’m not super lean or anything, but even at my 20-week appointment she walked in and was all “so you probably feel the baby all the time now, huh?” with a huge smile on her face. I pretty much wanted to wail NOOOOOOO! Because I didn’t.
I do suspect that I could have felt a bit of movement before 22 weeks, but we were moving and I was packing up our entire house while still doing work for the blog and book stuff. I rarely had a second to sit down and focus, and once we moved in to the new house is when I finally felt the kicks for the first time.
While on vacation, we saw the kicks on the OUTSIDE of my stomach, which was so cool. They still aren’t pronounced or anything but we can definitely see the baby bouncing around.
Seriously, sometimes I’m like WTF is he/she doing in there? It’s like a crazy manic dance party. No idea where that would come from… cough cough.
(I have visions that there is a personal soundtrack in my stomach complete with 90s Mariah, Whitney and Backstreet Boys. Obviously.)
I’m still not tired. If you haven’t read my previous updates… I’ve never been tired. I’ve kind of been the opposite. Sometimes my body feels a bit lethargic, or just like I can’t do the things I once did, but I’m so very rarely tired that it’s annoying. I can get by on 5 or 6 hours of sleep easily and not need a nap. I’m always awake.
I should have prefaced this, however, by saying that I am also a lunatic, my mind is always going a million miles an hour, I’m a light sleeper and not big on sleep to begin with. Yeah I know. Let’s see what I have to say in December. HAHAHAHAHAH. Not.
My activity level hasn’t dwindled much, but in the last three weeks I haven’t done a lot of “formal” exercise. From the time of my last update, I was still working out, walking a bunch, doing yoga at home and moving a ton. It was tough to strike a balance while I was packing the house because I didn’t want to overdo it with 12 hour days of moving and running up and down steps, PLUS exercise. It was all fine though. The first day we were in Michigan, I worked out and then we did our usual we-walk-everywhere-all-day routine and that night I felt it. We probably walked eight or ten miles that day and I just ended up sort of… sore? I didn’t feel overexerted until after, which is frustrating because I never know what’s too much. Other than that I really just listen to my body as best I can. These last two weeks I didn’t pack any sort of workout clothing for book tour trips. I knew I’d be walking all over NYC and on my feet a lot and not getting a huge amount of sleep. That was definitely the best choice for those locations. And now I’m playing it by ear depending on my schedule for the day. Some walking and yoga is always a must.
With the traveling and being-on-my-feet thing (and still wearing heels… ) I was initially concerned with swelling. Thankfully I have not had any yet, but in order to help that issue, back in August I bought a pair of compression socks. I actually just bought the running ones (I got a pair of socks and sleeves) because Eddie has used them for years and I was familiar with them. Of course, I got neon pink ones. While traveling, I put them on after (fairly short) flights and at night for a few hours while I do some work in my room. At home I wear them during the day occasionally while cooking. I love ’em.
On Friday while my mom and I were shopping, it was the first time that people were commenting on me being pregnant. Nearly every store I went in to, people asked either her or me about it. I loved it! It only took until 28 weeks. Sheesh. And no, no one has touched my belly yet or even come close. I don’t know if it will bother me if they do. Even though I can be insane at times, I don’t get worked up over things like that.
When it comes to what I’ve been wearing, I’m going to do a separate post about that this week. Is that cool? Or dumb? Had I not had book events to do, I probably would have lived in the above outfit for my entire pregnancy. But since I actually had to be somewhat professional and go places and have my face seen in public, I found a lot of great outfits that worked and I took (horrifyingly embarrassing) photos of all of them so far on hotel mirrors. Like actual OUTFITS. Not just yoga pants. OMG. Some pics are like the craptastic quality mirror shot above but others are a little better.
AND I also want to tell you about the other clothing items that have been lifesavers, like my old lululemon crops and new athleta stuff, plus the places that I found completely worthless for maternity clothing. I’m looking at you, Target. Stay tuned.
That’s that. I may do these a little more frequently now… or I may not. It depends on if I have things to say. Or at least – things to say that I deem important (hello: everything. not really but kind of.). I’m going to at least talk about some more things I’m loving as the weeks go by. Thanks for making it through all 2000 words because we are sooooo exciiitttted! Eeeee.

You are totally the most adorable pregnant person ever.
Do NOT get a stroller now. My advice is to what until the kid is 6-8 months old. Just use your car seat and then get a click-in stroller base for the car seat. When they are really little, don’t want to take them out of the car seat then put them in a stroller go shopping and repeat every time you go out with them. Much easier to keep them in the carseat and then just do the click in stroller base. Try to keep things easy for you whenever you can.
Also they are SO much lighter than actual strollers! You can get them for $50-$99 too. We loved our Graco carseat and stroller base.
And yes, you probably will never go to another movie for a good 8-12 months. But trust me…it so worth it when they flash you those smiles!! Pure mommy bliss!
I love this so much. Thank you for sharing your journey with us — it made me smile on this Monday morning!!! Wishing you nothing but healthy and happy things in this last trimester!!! <3 <3
My feelings about the gender of my kids were never right. Both times I thought I was having a girl and they were both boys. It is really neat that you are keeping your baby’s gender a surprise. Ugh! Sleeping only gets worse in your third trimester. You are going to end up just doing 20-minute power naps at night. EEK! I hope it gets better.
Congratulations! I just subscribed a week or two ago and I’m really enjoying your posts–great recipes and stories! My baby girl is graduating from high school this year. The baby gear can be overwhelming, and was back when I was buying. Regarding the stroller, Tawny has great advice. Definitely look for something you can handle one-handed and get in and out of your vehicle easily. We didn’t, and we regretted it. I’d just get the basics, like a Baby Bjorn-type carrier, car seat, bathtub, bassinet, etc. and wait to buy the bigger stuff as the baby grows. That way you’ll see a lot of stuff and know better what will work for you and your situation. One thing we had that we loved was a baby backpack, like for hiking. You can’t use that until the baby can hold his/her head up, but it was fantastic because we didn’t have to drag around a stroller when we were out and about. One of us wore the baby and the other carried the stuff.
Aww I love this post!
Congrats on your baby – You’re going to make the cutest mom!
Jessica
We got this stroller: http://uppababy.com/cruz/overview/ and an umbrella stroller when the kiddo turned 2. Don’t sweat it. Get what feels comfortable to you. Congrats!
You are super adorable and I love your brain dump, it is comforting to know someone that thinks as much as I do! LOL! XOXO!
I also have an anterior placenta and also didn’t feel the baby move until around that same time… it was SO annoying when everyone would ask and just assume that I have. Now I’m 37 weeks and this kid is insane. I swear he is doing yoga moves in there…
As for strollers, I actually fell in love with the City Mini GT because it is super easy to use (folds with one hand) and reasonably priced. However, I ALSO got the Summit X3 for jogging and now think I’m going to try to JUST use that stroller for everything and return the City Mini (in case you wanted my whole song and dance…). The Wise Baby is amazing for product reviews and has a guide that picks the best of all the important things. I basically took that to Buy Buy Baby and it saved my sanity.
I am sure it’s already been mentioned
( I can’t seem to read the comments) but I bought a BoB-http://www.bobgear.com/strollers/revolution-flex It has the ability with an adaptor to hold a car seat, and you can walk for days with it, street, trail, anywhere. My little one is 4 and I have used every cent I paid for it. I have jogged over 300 miles with it. Hands down the best “baby” purchase I made ( barring the awesome glider/rocker/thingy I can’t seem to part with). I also bought a Maclaren-http://www.shopmaclarenbaby.com/BMW-Buggy/MV000031,default,pd.html?dwvar_MV000031_color=Black#start=1 once he was out of the carseat for quick trips, or when I traveled.
Hello and congrats!! My little one is 5 months now and it’s such a fun / scary / exciting time being pregnant :) I have to throw in my stroller 2 cents. We went with the Graco click connect “system” and love it. So we have the click connect infant car seat, a jogging stroller and the lite rider stroller. The car seat clicks SUPER easily into both strollers, and both can be used when she’s out of the infant seat as well…we originally had the frame stroller like someone else mentioned, but we ended up going with the lite rider instead – it’s just as lightweight, and we didn’t want to have to buy a third stroller when she’s too big for the infant seat.
Oh and PS – if you register at Babies R Us they let you pretty much return anything, so if you end up hating anything you get once you actually use it with baby, takes some of the stress away to know you get a second chance :)
I’ve got 0 children but can’t wait to have them one day… a few years down the road. But I’m obsessed with reading about what those who ARE having them are going through! You look amazing and good luck with the third trimester!
Great post! I hear you on trying to pick the “right” stroller, car seat, baby gear, etc. Truth is, there really is no RIGHT one, but one that’s right for you. I used BABY BARGAINS all.the..time. It’s the best. There are product reviews from parents who actually use the stuff. They rate things by $$$ and safety ratings. It was a Godsend for my crazy mind.
And as for baby moving around, I also didn’t feel my first one kicking much until around 22 weeks. I was so bummed b/c my sister – who was also pregnant and due around the same time – felt her baby kicking much earlier than me. My second one I felt much earlier – and much more frequently. I always said it was like Dance Party USA in there. HAHAHA! Good luck and enjoy this time!
Baby Bargains is great! I used that book to look up details on everything!
Aw! Love this all! Quick word on strollers…I don’t think the expensive ones are worth it. IMO. I have the baby trend jogger and its amazing. I’ve killed it and its always been there for me- no issues! Get the one with the car seat attachment and you can use it for practically everything!
Feeling the baby move is my absolute FAVORITE part of being pregnant! It makes all the hard stuff worthwhile. So happy for you!
we have the chicco liteway 2-in-1 stroller and love it. our carseat clicks right in and it turns into a regular stroller when the baby can sit up! also, i never had a feeling about gender either, and it freaked me out up until the end! (we had a little girl in august). also: i’ve been writing product lists on my blog if you have any interest…
my husband used to say that he would be terrified to have a girl. when i got pregnant, he already had a girl’s name picked out. when we found out it was a girl, he was overjoyed. now he is a 6’3″ dude who is totally wrapped around our little girl’s finger ;) it’s amazing what these kiddos do to the men in our lives…there’s nothing better!
Before my first was born I was freaking out about the stroller thing too. So many to choose from and I’d like to think I’m the less is more type – I didn’t want three strollers for my ONE child. I ended up purchasing the BOB jogger. I love that stroller and I knew that the majority of use would actually be jogging! I put the infant car seat adapter on it and used it with the car seat while he was little. That stoller has been everywhere and yes, it’s a jogger and a little on the big side compared to snap and go’s but it has worked perfectly for us.
We have two kids now (ages 3 and 1) and I have the single and double BOB jogger. The single BOB still gets most of the use and I’m a fan.
You have got to be the most adorable pregnant lady ever (here’s to hoping my friends don’t shun me after seeing my comment here because we are all obsessed with your blog!) Love reading your updates, I lol’d over your pregnant lady at the beach comments!
Duh. My dear girl, didnt you know when you are pregnant and at the beach you dig a belly hole in the sand so you can lay on your belly?! My mother told me she did it all the time to get some relief and it worked. Bless you and your cute self!
I am so excited you’re feeling that baby! and that you can see it…SO FUN. It never ceases to be absolutely amazing.
Sean did a TON of research on strollers and carseats–basically reading all the reviews and consumer studies he could. Since we live fairly urban we didn’t want a huge stroller–originally we wanted one of those 3-wheel BOB things, but they are HUGE. We went with the Mamas and Papas Armadillo in yellow and love it. You can maneuver it one-handed (close and open) and it’s so nice to push. I don’t use it a ton yet–I use my Solly wrap (similar to a Moby, but thinner and waaaay less hot) and Ergo a ton. The one thing about our stroller is that it’s not one of those set deals–we had to buy a separate carseat and adaptor to fit our stroller. That said, it was NBD for us. We have the Chicco KeyFit infant carseat and really like it. We also splurged and bought a MamaRoo instead of a regular baby swing. Casper seems to like it (he’s napping in it now), it has white noise functions (waves, ocean, etc…) and an iPod/phone adaptor. Baby gear is SO overwhelming. Goooooood luck!
Love our Mamas and Papas! We have the Sola find it so easy to use.
I am like comment number 540.1 so I do not know if you are even going to see this BUT from one mama to another get the Uppa Baby Worth the money! I can push it one handed through Target’s clothing section with a Starbucks in my hand like it’s nuthin’ Expensive yes but so worth it. Two years later and we are still UppaBaby obsessed.
Also, bummed I am going to miss you when you are in San Francisco next month but got tickets to go to a taping of Ellen- so hows about I just mention your name there instead?! WHY HAVENT YOU BEEN ON ELLEN YET?! Hunting down a producer for you ;)
I’m excited too! I can’t wait to see baby!
Yes – so looking forward to seeing your maternity outfits! I just found out that I am pregnant (only 6 weeks along) and am so interested to hear about all the clothes! You look adorbs!
You are ADORABLE! Love hearing about the pregnancy :) So exciting!
Love this post. I read these brain dumps and completely relate. Your belly is so cute. I would probably slug someone if they came up and touched my belly though.
OMG! Target was THE WORST for maternity clothes. The funny thing is, when I wasn’t pregnant, I would always somehow wander in there and they had so much cute stuff. When I was pregnant…nothing. I ended up getting a lot of stuff on super sale with Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity. They have great sales. We got a chicco stroller- $99- it works with his Keyfit 30 carseat. Love it– super light! Then we have the BOB because I knew I wanted to spend the money on a running stroller. Also–using the Ergo a ton!!! My sis-in-law has the Uppa– very cool, but I would have never spent the money. Ok, that’s my brain dump for ya!
Okay. Strollers. The BOB revolution is great. It folds down flat and fits in the trunk of my Fiesta. It has great maneuverability, you can get a car seat adapter, and it is wonderful for running with. It is bigger than an umbrella stroller but way more functional. The larger wheels and the fact that there are three of them allow you to tackle all sorts of terrain. I have pushed mine through almost a foot of snow with little issue. Mine has been through two kids and is still in fantastic condition. Plus, you steer it with a coffee in your hand.
Love this post! I wish I had written more down when I was pregnant with my babies. Reading this post reminds me of what it was like to be pregnant. And for goodness sakes, go to the movies! Do as much as you can now with your man. Its hard to make time when you have babies. But there is something even worse then just being crunched for time : MOMMY GUILT. Its a real thing. So enjoy every second you have now :)
HI! I’m pretty sure our due dates must be a week apart. I’m due 12/5 with baby #1. I can relate to EVERAYTHANG in this post. Except I have had people touch my belly. It’s fine if I know them, but strangers? Not a fan. Baby kicks are the beeeeessst.
Love my City Select stroller. Wish I had it when I had my first baby. I got the Chicco and didn’t think about what I would do when I had a second kid. Sold it and bought they City Select. You can buy it now as a single and there’s an infant attachment bar to snap in the car seat. Then when you have a second baby, you can just buy the second seat and it snaps in! Fits 16 different ways for 2 kids! And you can buy the extra stand like I have so my 4 year old can ride on the back when she doesn’t want to sit in it. (I got it when mine were 2 and newborn). Now they are 2 and 4 and we still use it!! Also, get an umbrella stroller for quick traveling if needed.
congratulations on your move to a new house!!
As for the stroller, if you want a easy and multitasking type stroller; take a look at
Buggaboo bee or buggaboo camelon. They are small light and very easy to push, and you can personalize them as much as you want.
As for baby clothes; the basics i white or neutral colors :) the rest you get as gifts ;)
Enjoy your pregnancy, because that feeling of beeing alone in your body after its over is … Well.. A lonely feeling..
Love hearing about your pregnancy…anyone’s pregnancy really. It’s such an amazing thing and we all experience it slightly different but the same too. Anyways, strollers- ugh probably our toughest choice for baby gear. Since we live in snowy Buffalo I had no intnetions of going out in the winter, but during the summer we use it daily and he’s two now and still loves it. (We call it a racecar now…it works so I go with it.) Anyways we spent probably at least two hours at Babies R Us one day testing out strollers…we wanted something fairly light, only 4 wheels, stylish/fun, and it had to have an adjustable handle. The adjustable handle was the game changer because my husband and I are super tall, but others that use the stroller are short so the handle makes it comfortable for everyone. Even the little guy gets a kick out of pushing the stroller from time to time and I just bend the handle down. We ended up with a Mama’s and Papas- not the cheapest stroller but less than the UPPAbaby- which is great if you can swing it.
Excited for your fashion post, and don’t give up on Target just yet. They have great nursing tanks that you might find useful in the near future. I bought at least five and used them to layer even through winter…made it much easier to nurse in public and even at home without my belly exposed to the cold (or the public for that matter)
First off I love that you didn’t find out your baby’s gender. We didn’t either and people thought we were CRAZY (partly because one of my pregnancies was twins, but that’s a whole other story). Second, the best stroller to get is a BOB. It fits a tons of car seat brands for when they are tiny and when they are old enough to sit in the stroller itself they are totally comfortable. Plus it goes anywhere easily and is pretty maneuverable. What I mean by go anywhere, is we go to a farmer’s market that has gravel paths. NEVER try to push a stroller with tiny wheels through gravel. It’s like trying to plow a field or something. Ugh, never again! Jogging strollers rock!
So here is my quick idea for you on strollers.
My girls are 8 1/2 and 14 1/2 now.
I bought Both of them the Graco Travel System. You will have no regrets with that! Because there is nothing more tiring than carrying a baby in that heavy carrier, you need the stroller. And they are so easy to fold and pop in the car.
Let me tell you , I am no soccer mom, but having a mini van with the rolling doors…best thing for baby’s and kids!
Okay I’m done…………….off to sewing.
P.S.
On not finding out the baby’s sex….
………….I would tell everyone it was the worlds best surprise! (on both girls)
I also have an anterior placenta! I am almost 20 weeks pregnant, and still haven’t felt a thing (although we could see our baby moving around like crazy at our anatomy scan last week). I’m hoping that I feel the baby move soon, but I have a feeling it will be another few weeks before I do.
As for strollers, we live in Manhattan in a small apartment and we’re planning to buy the Uppababy Vista. Yes, it’s expensive, but it also comes with the bassinet and is very versatile. Seeing as I will be walking around all the time (we don’t have a car), I think that the extra large basket will come in handy for groceries, etc. And, if you do have another child, you can add on a rumble seat. It seems like a great all-purpose stroller because I’m REALLY hoping that we don’t have to buy more than one.
Definitely the Uppababy Vista. I have never regretted spending $$$ on it. You can also use it just like a snap and go in the beginning! Good luck and here is a post I wrote about it! http://blackbirdideas.com/2014/05/12/3-month-mother-update/
You do look great!! Please, please write a post on your maternity fashion soon! I am due a week after you, and the Old Navy maxi dresses that I have lived in all summer are starting to get old. I am so frustrated with the clothes I can find, and desperate to have something that makes me feel cute and look at least somewhat professional.
Also, the website Cricket’s Circle has been so helpful. They rank their top 3 choices of baby stuff, and then you can ignore the hundreds of other options. It’s so much easier to read about 3 strollers (carseats, diaper bags, etc) than 20.
I love my Britax B Agile stroller and infant car seat for my baby. It’s light weight but does the job perfectly. It’s a great price and also got the highest safety ratings last year on Consumer Reports! So much fun preparing for baby!!!
The second trimester was definitely the easiest! I didn’t get super tired the 2nd tri, but the 1st was horrendous.I didn’t get too much through the 3rd because Owen was 6 weeks early! I got my appetite back during the 2nd too. I’m also not one of those people who get weird about people rubbing and touching my belly, but I never had a random stranger come up and touch it either. I do, however, have random strangers come up and cuddle, coo, and talk to my son. Some have even taken him out of my arms to hold, but he’s reached for them. The child is not shy. I fully expect him to do the same for you when we see you in Chapel Hill! You’re going to die. Not kidding. He’s absolutely the best baby ever ;)
Since I was last pregnant in 1973 and am now a grandmother, some of your experiences are a bit different to mine, especially in the matter of clothes. We wouldn’t have been seen dead in such body-hugging gear. But most things seem to be much the same.
On the subject of baby buggies or whatever you call them: please avoid those silly 3-wheeled things. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen toddler-size kids in one of them trying to stand up or moving around, and the whole thing just topples over. Bang goes the kid’s head on the (usually) concrete floor. I reckon the kind that fold down flat for newborns but come back up when the baby can sit are the most practical and one will see you through. Otherwise you will be buying baby carriages every 6 months, lol. Brandnames and such are a whole new language to me but basic design isn’t.
I am pleased you aren’t interested in knowing the gender of your baby. If you don’t know ahead of time, then at the end of what is, let’s face it – a less than fantastic time, you will get a nice surprise.
Best of luck to you and Eddie and baby, of course.
I’m a little late to the party with this comment, but my sister-in-law just had a baby and we got her the Baby Jogger City stroller. She LOVES it. You can add seats to it if you choose to have more kids, the seat converts into a high chair that attaches to a table, it fit just about any infant carseat she wanted…it’s kind of an all around useful stroller. When we went to visit her before the baby was born, I saw at least five of them just while walking around their little town. As far as strollers go, it’s pretty reasonable given everything you can do with it.
The ONLY stroller to get is the BOB Revolution. It’s the best hands down. It’s the only stroller I have (single with my first and we got a double when we had #2). I LOVE it.

I read the comment that advised you not to get a stroller? Really? No. It’s very useful. I know that in the first month or so you won’t be going out much. However, once you start to venture out it’ll come in handy! We got the stroller/carseat combo. The seat clicks into the stroller. We go for walks, go to the mall just to get out of the ouse, we honestly use it all the time….and our little one is three months old. That carseat will get heavy very quickly…..plus having to carry around a diaper bag. Yeah….get a stroller. You’ll be glad you did. And yes…..Target sucks for Maternity clothes!
Cute! and I loved the post. Also, I busted out laughing with the whole movie thing at the beginning. That would be me and my husband. Often I’ll say something like that (about whenever we have a baby, recently it’s been with our new puppy), about our life never being the same again and we won’t be able to do things, and he’ll say “Umm, we never do that now.” It’s hysterical the life I think we have in my head. lol And the La Croix!!!!! Gaaaahhhh!
If you were not pregnant and had sky-blue eyes, we’d be twins. I never noticed that in like the 2+ years I’ve been reading this(I notice it when youre pregnant…?). Random.
