Tuesday Things.
1. Totally dead over this eggplant parmesan pizza with crispy capers. WANT WANT WANT.
2. Your thoughts on orange juice pulp: love it or hate it? I have never known anyone that loves it… besides my husband! He is the only one I know who buys orange juice with HIGH PULP. I feel like we’re 82 years old.
3. EEEEEE. It’s early but it’s technically 2015 planner time again and I already ordered my whitney english day designer. I absolutely LOVED it this year and can’t imagine not using it again.
4. Speaking of fruit things… ummm our house is being overtaken by fruit flies. Even though all the fruit is gone and I’ve poured clorox down the drain. What is your go-to solution for this? I’ve tried the syrup and vinegar in a cup trick and it never really did anything. Note: I’m also highly impatient.
5. I’ve really been missing the crazy caffeine buzz mid-afternoon now that it’s cooler outside. And for the record, dunkin pumpkin is so much better than starbucks pumpkin. SO MUCH.
6. TV TV! I am so stoked for what happened in the last ten seconds of Boardwalk Empire. I am, however, annoyed that SO much time has passed in the show – it’s made me completely confused and I hate that Rothstein is dead even though he was a total creep. Still completely losing it over SOA – again, another show where the last moments made me go whaaaaaat. Did Jax technically screw part of his own club?? I may say it every week but this last episode of Masters of Sex was probably my favorite. Freaking Lizzy Caplan. GAH. She is so good. And Michael Sheen’s vulnerability. And I LOVE Libby with Robert – maybe because she doesn’t get chemistry with anyone on the show? I will say that I have about zero interest in the smaller storylines though.
7. Um, I could be wrong but isn’t there always “a cold going around?” Like if someone mentions that they don’t feel well the next person is all OH YEAH THERE’S A BUG GOING AROUND! Like really? It’s been going around for all of my 31 years? Huh.
8. 42 sentences that wouldn’t have made sense 10 years ago. Ha. It’s true.
9. I’m having a fall nail polish crisis. Like I want to buy EVERY color I see even though I probably already have EVERY color. Fall is the best. Haaaaaalp. Marketer’s dream.

I’m having the same problem with fruit flies! I noticed them this week, and last night I “accidentally” set a trap for them. I was drinking a glass of wine last night and all of a sudden there were 2 or 3 dead flies in my wine…gross! But, I decided to leave my “trap” out overnight and I had over a dozen in it this morning! I guess i”ll find out when I get home tonight if I still have a fruit fly problem! :)
I want that cookie sandwich! Haha and you’re so right, Dunkin >>>>> Starbucks any day. And cheaper!! :)
Three things: 1) I am also falling victim to the nail polish colours for fall….. officially doomed! I love them all and let’s be honest, Pinterest fuels the addiction. 2) That cookie sandwich looks like something I need right this minute. And 3) My fruit fly traps didn’t seem to work as well this year either (I use dish soap and vinegar) and those little buggers drive me nuts! My little mixture was super successful last year but I’m going to try yours as well. Let me know if you come up with any better solutions!
You have to put a few drops of dishsoap in the glass with the vinegar… The idea is that that vinegar attracts them so they try to land on the surface, but the soap messes with the surface tension (or something) so rather than being able to stand on and skim, they sink. I seriously have a fruit fly graveyard within a few hours after I do it!
that’s exactly right– the soap decreases the surface tensions and the the flies sink in. try it with apple cider vinegar or with a few more drops of soap if it’s not working out for you.
I do white wine vinegar and dish soap w/ a little piece of fruit in it with saran wrap over the bowl with some holes poked in it. They go in and can’t get out, even if they don’t ‘drown’. Works like a charm!
I’ve even tried apple cider vinegar and dish soap – I think it works even better than white!
Good luck! Fruit flies suck.
I get baby food jars, clean them out of baby food, pour in some apple cider vinegar, use a screwdriver to poke holes in the top of the lid going from the outside to the inside, then screw the lid back on. The fruit flies will be attracted to the smell of the vinegar, go into the holes (since the opening pops into the jar) but then can’t get back out. I use several around the kitchen when they get really bad so they can get them wherever they are.
As for OJ pulp…gross. I don’t like feeling “solids” across my tongue as I drink and not chew. TMI?
My fiance and I were JUST talking about this last night! We love high pulp orange juice and we were discussing how much it would stink if one of us didn’t. Pretty much a relationship deal breaker right there.
Haha, I agree! It’s so good to be on the same page pulp-wise! My all-time fave is “moderate pulp,” but if that’s not an option I do high pulp for normal drinking and no pulp if making mimosas :)
LOVE pulp!
Pulp makes me gag! So nasty. My husband will drink with pulp but I always buy sans pulp whenever I get OJ… Which hasn’t happened in a LONG time. I had glucose intolerance when I was pregnant so I had to cut out all sugary bevvies and now I’m used to not drinking juice so I just dont buy it. I’ll save my sugar intake for tasty treats. :)
1) I am a super pulp lover and my boyfriend is not. I usually give in but then buy my own little high pulp OJ, too.
2) The vinegar with drops of dish soap work! We did that is a taller container and put a paper one in the top so that once they get down there, the flies don’t come back up. Within an hour, we had tons! So surprised.
3) We don’t watch the same TV shows but I am a little TOO excited about the fall tv season finally starting. I’ve watched most of the good binge-worthy shows on Netflix and need some new shows to get obsessed with.
Orange juice pulp is gah-ross. *shudders(
I live in the country and fruit flies are constantly around. I pour apple cider vinegar all the way to the top of a pickle jar and put on the lid. Then poke holes in the lid with a knife. They’ll go in to drink the vinegar then can’t get out. You’ll be disgusted with how many you can catch that way.
I LOVE super pulpy orange juice but…my boyfriend doesn’t.
Also, I totally poured some red wine into a little dish and the fruit flies went crazy for it. And drowned. And died. It was splendid. (I got the idea after they kept dive bombing my glasses of alcohol). I’m going to say that sweet red wine probably would work best.
Your fruit fly solution is hilarious!
I had a huge fruit fly problem last year in my tiny, tiny NYC studio! The vinegar trick only creates more flies because they can’t get stuck.
This is the key!!!
http://www.amazon.com/TERRO-Fruit-Fly-Trap-T2500/dp/B002EJLLEE
These traps are amazing, set up a few and your flies will be gone in no time. I will never use anything else.
I’m with you, not a pulp fan! You really gotta love pulp to buy High Pulp!!
I’m glad it’s not just me, what’s with these fruit flies this year! For us, they started later than normal. My husband’s trick which works really well but completely horrifies me is, he squeezes lemon juice and a 1/4 of a lemon into a cup, covers it with saran wrap and pokes holes in it. And now for the horrifying part….. Once he’s caught a bunch – he puts the cup in the microwave and murders them all!!
Whaaaat?! High pulp OJ all the way!! Time to start a highly scientific poll on the cookbook tour to determine the breakdown of pro-pulp and anti-pulpers.
We have used a bit of yeast (like for baking) dissolved in water, in a mason jar, with an inverted plastic bag stuck over the top, with one corner cut off and pushed in towards the water (if that makes any sense). Works like a charm! We figured it out by accident one day, but the flies seem to love it. Just make sure not to leave it out for more than a few days without changing the water. :)
The trick for the fruit fly trap with vinegar is to trap them in the glass. If you roll of a piece of heavier paper (we just grab an ad from the recycling) in the shape of a waffle cone so there is ~1.5 cm hole in the bottom and is wide enough at the top to hold it off of the bottom of the glass far enough, they will fly into the trap and not know how to fly out. That way even if they don’t drown immediately, you will have a bunch flying around until in the cup instead of in your kitchen.
I like pulp in my orange juice! It’s very likely that I’m secretly 82 years old.
I love pulp in orange juice! I would always buy extra pulp but that doesn’t seem to be a crowd pleaser. :) I also like pulp in my coconut water.
For your fruit flies skip the vinegar. This works for me every time (well the two times I’ve had to use it). Get a glass, fill it with cheap wine (any will do really) and cover it with plastic wrap. Poke small holes in it. The flies CANNOT resist the smell and crawl in through holes to get to the wine and are unable to get out, eventually drowning in the wine.
It totally works! Good luck :)
My family has always drank orange juice with pulp and I love it. OJ without the pulp is just sweet watery stuff. Doesn’t taste the same haha
Try either “Braggs Organic Cider Vinegar” or “Trader Joe’s Cider Vinegar”. I pour about 1/2 cup in a small bowl and place plastic wrap tightly on top. Then punch a the tines of a fork through (about 5-times) I have to say it really does work. I always have large amounts of fruit ripening on my countertops for smoothies and juicing and that bowl will be full of dead and dying fruit flies (kind of sickening to talk about) and hardly see any at all flieing in my kitchen. I think the natural cider vinegar is more attractive to them than regular vinegar. I have noticied that they do love my red wine (like others stated) But that will be the day I pour the fruit flies a glass of wine.
Cut an empty plastic water bottle not quite in half ,pour in your solution in the bottom 3/4 ,invert the top into the bottom (without the cap) ,so you will be making a way in ,but not an easy way out. I put clear packing tape around the pieces where they meet ,just so the little buggers can’t get out the edges.Voila!
But OJ with pulp is the best!! :)

Apple cider vinegar with a squirt of dish soap in the glass has always worked very well for me when it comes to fruit flies. If they’re really bad – like in multiple rooms of the house then I would put a glass in each room that you find them in. I had seen suggestions of putting some plastic wrap over the top of the glass and poking holes in it with a fork, to help trap the flies in there but I didn’t find that it made a really huge difference – they’ll go towards that sweet smell no matter what. Even when I don’t think it’s working well enough all I have to do is pick up the glass and look at the bottom and be grossed out by the number of dead fruit flies I can see on the bottom of the glass. And get the GOOD apple cider vinegar with the ‘Mother’, not the clear(ish) one, the one with the ‘Mother’ is sweeter and will work better at attracting those flies.
Yes, we polish addicts do have issues…I always want…
We have tons of fruit flies too. It drives me crazy.
Try this, it works for us.
Pour some apple cider vinegar in to a bowl with a squirt of dish soap. They flock to it… and die… as morbid as that sounds!
LOL, my whole family, my Boyfriend and I all LOVE lots of pulp in our orange juice! ;-P
I also have lots of fruit flies, will try the tips.
Pulp-lover here, too! I don’t know why, I guess it just seems more authentic like it’s fresh-pressed. Hope you’re feeling great still and good luck with the flies!
The fruit fly trick is apple cider vinegar in a shallow cup or dish. Add a few drops of dish detergent. I usually set up two different cups on either side of the kitchen.
I do a bowl filled mostly with water. Add a couple T. Of Apple cider vinegar, olive oil on top…just a glug, it doesn’t have to cover the whole surface…a dozen overnight, more the next day…
Our fruit fly trick works like a charm. And we have a SERIOUS fruit fly issue when my MIL ships out a box of farmers market fruit and veggies every other week from CA. I love the goodies, I HATE the flys.
Juice glass half full of cider vinegar (or just plain white has worked in a pinch) – no soap. I take a small ziplock baggie and cut a teeny corner off, something like a 1/4 inch hole, and put that end of the bag down into the glass, not quite touching the surface of the vinegar. Secure the baggie around the top of the glass with a rubberband. The flys LOVE this stuff. They will not die immediately, and be forewarned that they will sometimes lay eggs in there (EW, GROSS) so was said juice glass thoroughly before drinking some no pulp OJ.
My husband, too, loves the high pulp stuff. ICK? We compromise on “homestyle” medium pulp.
XO
My husband loves pulp too!! And we had a battle with fruit flies earlier this summer… perhaps its a coincidence?! We got rid of them with a little bit of ammonia down every drain and toilet… within a day or two we were done with them!
I have purchased so many Fall polishes that are slightly the same as previous Fall polishes I have bought in years past. Only to me are they completely different. I buy them from Amazon b/c they are a couple dollars cheaper per bottle vs. Ulta or Target so I have less guilt about buying dups. HA!
I dig high pulp OJ. Yes I do. Yum.
To help rid yourself of those fruit flies place in a small bowl a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and just a drop of dish soap. The cider vinegar attracts them and the soap breaks the surface so they get stuck in the stuff. It really works. We had the same issue in July and I just changed the vinegar each morning for three days. No more fruit flies.
Ok, I can solve the nail polish issue….I love Julep. The polish is highly pigmented and lasts foreva! Seriously! Plus you get a treat once a month in the mail!
We LOVE high pulp orange juice and I didn’t understand ANY of the 42 sentences. It’s a new language to me!
YES TO PULP!! My favourite part of the orange juice!
I do love high pulp OJ, it reminds me more of fresh squeezed!
I see you have a ton of recommendations for fruit flies. I admit I did not read them all so maybe someone gave you this solution already.
I have a 3 year old grandson and food ends up everywhere so fruit flies have been a HUGE problem. I have tried all the vinegar traps with minimal success. This year I decided to try something different and, wow, this really works.
Little bowl, tiny piece of banana, cover tightly with plastic wrap and poke a hole in the top. The stupid flies crawl in to get the banana and cannot find their way out.
I caught hundreds of them this way. It was disgusting. But effective. They don’t die, you take the bowl outside and let them go. You will have to keep setting the trap until they’re gone and, because they are so stupid, you have to move it around to where they are or better yet, set up multiple traps.
Good luck.
You’re right DD pumpkin over Starbucks ;) Number 7…..i know, like really? I too am in a fall nail polish crisis. Keep us posted when you find your fall nail polish favorites,
I am also having a fall nail polish crisis. But I am currently sporting Baubing for Bobbles, which I like a lot. It looks super dark in some lights and super blue in others. Fancy! You should try out the copper Essie color I gave you at the book signing in NYC, it’s SO MUCH FUN. And shimmery! And fall-like. And on trend, not that I really care about that last one. Good luck picking something!
1. orange juice pulp is stupid. the end.
2. try apple cider vinegar + a little dishsoap but in a shallow small bowl. like those little condiment bowls. put out more than 1. i got 13 FFs over 3 days. i know im gross. wine also sorta works but supposedly the dish soap keeps them from being able to get out so put some dishsoap in wine. but i say dont waste wine ! use vinegar.
I have SO many fruit flies too! I saw them on one of my pretty red pears, screamed bloody murder and tossed it into the trash. HELP!
OMG fall nail polish! I have, like, none! I had to get rid of ALL of my nail polish and start over bc I developed an allergy to a chemical in it, so now I can only buy expensive 5 Free polishes. Yay for Deborah Lippmann and Dior, boo for my wallet!
i loooooove to chew my oj! yum!!!
Agree!!
1. Mmmm.. I second that.. Eggplant has a little hold on me!
2. I like pulp.. High pulp no.. Some yes, actually makes me feel like it’s the real deal. I’d prolly call his friends and family over for an intervention if he starts doing shots of prune juice..yeeeeeeeuck!
3. Planner I am!!! Heck bring on 2016 while your at it!
4. The fruit flies, believe it or not I would light a citrus candle and poof they are gone… Or diving into the hot wax!!!!
5. I’m a mom of an almost 3 year old, and never caught on to the coffee thing. My friends think I’m nuts because apparently kids= more coffee than ever! But on a side note love all this pumpkin shiznit ( I believe that word may have originated here in MA)
6. TV TV…hmmm let me let you in on a little secret..watch it NOW.. Because soon…. And I mean soon, you will get to know Bert and ernie on a personal level. You will be dancing to the wiggles, and you will be DVR-ing sprout TV. So finish those seasons up. You may possibly think your free in the car… Until you realize you have successfully created new words to “if your happy and you know it” :-)
7. Very true on the cold thing.. This made me giggle.. Your so right… And for the first time ever my kiddo is sick with one. Handling it pretty well for a first timer.. Me no so much I feel like a “new” mom running around with a tissue! And totally giving in.. Okay you can have icecream for dinner. :-)
8. Loved it! 19 & 20 are why I do not have a FB account. Am I missing out?
9. I worked in a salon for 14 years I feel you… Firmly believe I keep OPi in business.
Your blog is genius, just recently started following it, it’s wonderful! See you in Boston!
If their was EXTRA EXTRA HIGH pulp OJ, I would buy it!
Wine in a glass covered with saran wrap and then poke holes in the top. Works great!
For the flies, put some apple cider vinegar in a little bowl, put cling wrap over it, poke some holes in it. They get in but can’t get out, works every time!
hahahaha oh god i love pulp in my OJ! i mean, i wouldn’t go and buy high pulp, but i like it. haha
and i have fruit flies everywhere as well =/
aaaaaand OH MY GOD i can’t wait to buy a new planner!!! best feeling ever.
OMG YES DUNKIN!!! I thought I was the only one who preferred their pumpkin coffee to Starbucks. THANK YOU.
I am one of the freaks that loves high pulp orange juice. I actually won’t drink orange juice that doesn’t have high pulp….unless it’s in a mimosa.
