Tuesday Things.
1. So crazy intrigued by this vegan mexican layer dip. Craving it badly.
2. I mentioned this on facebook last week, but I saw that Pizza Hut is bringing back BOOK IT? Omg. I lived for Book It. A bunch of you said it never went away… so maybe it didn’t… but just the mention of it got me all excited. Pizza parties and reading… hello my very favorite things.
3. I would pretty much do anything for these rose gold nikes. Sold out EVERYWHERE.
4. All I want in life is a CRISPY waffle maker. I have gone through multiple waffle makers that only produce soft ones. Haaaalp me.
5. Because she is the most incredible writer… this post on taking up space and acting small. Adore.
6. You’d think an alternate title for my job would be “professional grocery shopper” but I always seem to pick the wrong lane in the store. This happened to us on Sunday and we spent 20 minutes in line fuming.
7. I NEED A TV BLOG. I must figure out how to do this. Anyhoo: Sons of Anarchy – dead over it. Can I just say how much I love the little Chibs storyline? So cute. And now I’m having second thoughts about how I think they might kill Juice. But maybe that is just Kurt Sutter’s way of appealing to the audience on his behalf and then taking him out? Of course. Boardwalk was back to a little of it’s boring self this week, even though I still adore it due to my awkward crush on Steve Buscemi. Give me more Margaret though. HOMELAND! The beginning was sooo slow and boring, but I ended up getting into it. I hope they can bring this show back from the brink of death this season. As a pregnant person, I had massive anxiety every time Carrie had the baby. Eeeek. I obvi still love me some Saul and if he turns bad I will throw a tantrum. And I’ll just say what we’re all thinking – GIVE US MORE QUINN. Holy crap. He is a stunner. Oh and Nashville… I am getting vibes that they will turn Luke into a bad guy later this season… maybe cheating or something? Super happy for Juliette at the end. OMG okay I’m done.
8. 35 life lessons! boom.
9. This morning I almost became the person that bought a neck pillow in the airport. The surrounding germs are the only thing that stopped me.

BookIt definitely disappeared in these parts of town .. .and the fact that it’s back has me SO FREAKING EXCITED TOO … lol when I saw your post on facebook I actually woo-hoo-ed out loud … randomly.
I want a crispy waffle maker too … for whatever reason, after I make my waffles I always end up toasting them to get that added crunch :( PLEASE let me know, if you end up finding the perfect one :)
And that doughnut … yes, please!!
I have always, always, always wanted to start at TV blog! Maybe then I would feel like the obsession is being put to good use. :)
The trick to crispy waffles: When you pull them out of the waffle maker, let them cool on a wire cookie cooling rack for a few minutes. They won’t be as piping hot, but they’re crunchy and that’s worth it. My husband and I figured this out after too many limp waffles. Changed our lives.
I have had success making crispy waffles by toasting them after I take them out of the waffle maker.
Love those rose gold Nikes! Shiny things, oh yes. Just the other day I was eyeing up rose gold Vans! And stumbled upon a picture of gold glitter Ugg sneakers and I bought them without a second thought. Thank goodness for Amazon 2-day prime because I CANNOT WAIT for them to arrive. Have a wonderful week!
Okay, the secret to crispy waffles (at least in my experience): Cook as normal in a classic (not Belgian) waffle maker. Freeze in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Toast.
Yes, it is a pain and requires cooking a day ahead, but it is the only way I’ve found to get crispy waffles so far!
I agree!!! Belgian waffles do not get crispy. If you have a waffle maker that makes round waffles, you can heat them up on a skillet instead of the toaster to crisp them up instead.
Juice is dead???? I have this season recorded on my DVR and haven’t had the time to watch it yet. So sad that Juice is dead!!!!!!!!!
no no he is not!! that is just my *thoughts* on what will happen on SOA – i think they will kill him off but he is still alive!
Love it all. But especially NASHVILLE!! I have always loved Juliette, even though it seems like no one else does. SO happy that things seem to be looking up for her! I have the same weird feeling about Luke, I mean there is no chance they’re just going to have Rayna be in a functional relationship.. because it’s Rayna. Ha!
Wow the vegan Mexican layer dip looks amazing. Must try! Thanks for sharing :)

You have to solve the grocery store line the not-quite-appropriate way we do: each of us gets in the two most promising lines with our baskets, then the person in the slower one eventually sidles over to their partner in the faster line. Don’t mind me, cough cough.
I 100% feel you on the checkout lane. The worst is when they put the slooowest cashiers in the express lane.
I’m gonna say the crispy waffle problem might be in the recipe? I also hate soggy waffles but find that if you use LOTS of butter in the batter and eat them immediately they might get crispy enough. Otherwise throw them in the toaster, which is a total cheater move.
those nikes are perfect!
xo, cheyenne
Barney’s has the Nike’s :-) $145
I could talk TV with you anytime. And now I want a sprinkled pink donut.
Um, those rose gold sneakers are SO FUN! I’m loving the sporty trend that’s huge right now (basically because it’s adding a fashion-y touch to my always-in-yoga-pants lifestyle). I FINALLY splurged on the hip New Balances I’ve been wanting and later this fall I think I’m going to take the plunge on some wedge sneakers.
I’ve learned to never pick the grocery store lane that looks like it’s going to take the fastest. It ALWAYS takes the longest.
Crispy waffles — I learned the trick to making them! I have a recipe that has a tsp of cornstarch in, but the real trick is………….. DO NOT spray or grease the plates!! You think it’s going to stick (and at first it does) but if you cook it the right length of time (and your waffles have some butter or oil in) they really do come out crispy!
Of course, you actually need to have a waffle iron that promises non-stick… but seriously, no spray!
On the crisply waffles – experiment with substituting some of the liquid in your recipe with club soda or seltzer. It creates a great crispy outside, even on Belgian waffles. I’d start with 1/4 c and see how you like the results and adjust the amount to your liking. Baby needs a waffle!
New Balance trumps Nikes? (Im partial, I work for NB) check these out http://www.gilt.com/brand/new-balance/product/1063575824-new-balance-limited-edition-tropical-fish-pack-dragonfish-sneakers
they have a couple different colors :) ALso- obsesssed with Sons and with waffles in general. Perfect day? Eating waffles and watching reruns :)
Jessica,
I use the Waffles of Insane Greatness recipe from Annie’s Eats. And then my special touch for crispy waffles is to grease my waffle maker with a bit of bacon grease right before I pour in the batter. I’ve never had a floppy waffle with this combo. I even freeze extra squares then re-toast them throughout the week.
#4, You and me both girl, there’s nothing I love more than a crispy waffle in the mornings, but have not been able to produce one at home!
ohhhh noooo! Jessica come back to us puhleaze! I was sooooooo looking forward to meeting you in Seattle! i must have been too excited when you first released the tour dates and I wrote it down for TOMORROW the 8th in my planner! i was just now perusing your hashtag on insta to get all jazzed to meet you tomorrow and saw some photos tagged at Book Larder…and my heart sank :( I am so bummed. and made my friend miss it as well by default. Well we may just hop in the car and zoom down to San Fran to catch your next signing. Anyhoooo…I’m kicking myself for writing down the wrong day. I was really excited to meet you. You’ve inspired me in the kitchen oh so much in the last few years and i think you are great!! Love your blog and your book and your life and I wish we could be fraaans. Good luck with the rest of your tour and welcoming your sweet bebe in a couple of months :) love, quinn (aka somber in seattle. lolz)

Never found a Belgian waffle that was crispy enough for me…gotta go classic. And the best way to find good classic waffle makers is thrift stores! There are a few reallyyyy expensive ones out there ($70+) with decent reviews, but my mother in law found ours for us at a thrift store for $5 or something! Once we discovered the heat dial was turned all the way down and fixed that silly “problem”, crispy and delicious waffles every time!

Hello Waffle maker! Here’s my suggestion in video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DL3vUINFek
Hope it solves your problem!
Love this post. HOWEVER—please, please use **Spoiler Alert** next time you plan on dropping a bomb such as Juice’s death on SOA. Some of us haven’t watched the episode yet! TY!
juice is not dead on SOA!! the last few weeks i’ve been writing about what i *think* will happen – that is just my opinion! he is not dead!! that is just my thoughts on what i think they will do!
whew!! thanks for clarifying! i need to watch the latest episode to catch up.
“How Sweet Is TV” has a certain ring to it !
Neck pillow owners of the world unite! I PROUDLY use mine when I fly. #sorrynotsorry
I had the same problem with waffle makers. I ended up buying a slightly expensive one ($80-ish) that has VARIABLE TEMPERATURE CONTROL. This is very important apparently. It needs to be cranked up as high as it will go to make it very very hot. And using batters with a lot of fat also helps. It made crispy cornbread waffles. It’s your fault I had to do this, by the way. Those waffle chicken sandwiches! Sooo good. But less good with limp waffles.
I haven’t read my Tuesday Things in a while. LOVE it. Thank you for brightening my day.
PS: key to grocery store line effectiveness (prepare for sexism and agism): get in the girl’s line who has been there the longest. Get in the 16 year old line? Nope. Doesn’t know the produce numbers and hasn’t worked before.
Everything you write. Everything you suggest on Tuesday Things. And every. single. day. Perfection. We are always on the same page. And I don’t even know you! But you are so wonderful. Thank you. :)
I just want a waffle maker in general!
Between you & countless other blogs, these waffle recipes are KILLING me.
I am super curious where Juice’s story is going to go this season. I can’t wait to see how the whole series unfolds. I am also loving the Chibs storyline. So sweet. You need to start a TV blog!! I would totally read it and it’s always fun discussing TV! :)
I wait until the waffle light goes off and then let them sit in there for four more minutes. I freeze the leftovers and toast them in the toaster. Soggy waffles? No, thank you.
I wish you watched some shows that I watch. I’d like to hear your opinion on my shows. And I watch too many shows already to start watching yours. :-(
I bought an old Oster waffle maker on Ebay from the 80’s and they make the most crisp waffles ever!!! My mom ordered an old Toastmaster one off Ebay and she said it is the same, very crisp. The only way to go!
I know I’m late to the comment party but williams sonoma waffle maker and overnight yeast waffles. For real and amazing and the answer to all your waffle dreams.
Thanks for the share, lady! I know you’d love this. Trashy dips for the win ;D
My recommendation for crispy waffles is while you’re making waffles, pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees, then transfer each waffle directly to the oven rack (no sheet tray!). By the time you’re done cooking the waffles the first few will be delightfully crispy ( and still warm if you’re feeding a crowd). Not a maker, but it works great for me!
Quinn! <3 he is so damaged and I cannot get enough of him this season! Oh and I would love if you had a TV blog. I get so excited when I see your Tuesday posts, because I think "Yay can't wait to hear Jess's thoughts on show!"
