October Favorites: Food + Fun.
This apple caramel sauce. I realize I could probably make my own, but I tasted this in store and was SO hooked. My mom was dying over it too. And they have a pumpkin one! Eating by the jar commences… now.
It might be the eigth millionth time I’ve mentioned these, but the breathe tanks from athleta are INCREDIBLE. I can’t believe I ever thought the long tanks from lululemon were so awesome, because nothing compares to these. They obviously stretch with my bump too, but that’s not all. They are so soft and comfortable and flattering – they work perfectly right now under sweaters and what not and layered but go far enough over your butt (even while pregnant!) that you can wear them with leggings too, or at least under a layer. I can’t express my love for these enough. And they DO have fun colors every now and then, you just have to look.
Last week I talked about my lack of reading, but I’m REALLY into Amy Poehler’s book and loving it. I normally wouldn’t include one that I haven’t finished, but it easily takes the cake for October.
This blog, a bowl full of lemons. Remember when I talked about trying to organize last week and mentioned it? I mean, I’ll never TRULY be organized because I’m nuts, but I want to do everything on this blog. It’s very helpful. Even if I’ve just lost myself in it’s wonderful vortex of how to do everything… instead of actually doing anything.
This black truffle sesame salt! OMG. A wonderful reader (thank you!!!) gave this to me at one of my cooking classes a few weeks ago and I.have.been.hooked. She said she uses it on avocado toast – I only got to try that once so far since good avocados are few and far between at the moment. But I’ve also tried it on eggs and with some toast and humboldt fog cheese. And then on some mac and cheese. It is… GAH. So delicious.
Um, when it comes to TV, I can’t believe I’m going to declare this my favorite for the month, but I’m going with Showtime’s The Affair. Yes, I could easily give it to SOA or Boardwalk, but this show has sucked me in and I didn’t even realize it. First off, Pacey. Second, I love the rest of the cast. Third, I feel like I’m IN the story. I have anxiety for the characters. The past week I was like “omg, wtf, you told your wife you’d be home and you’re NOT, hello, we’re gonna get caught.” I mean, YOU’RE gonna get caught. See?! I have no idea. I feel like I’m IN this show. I want to know more.
On the topic of TV, uh, I’ve found something wonderful. I’ve started listening to freaking TV podcasts the next day!! I am obsessed. Hello, why can’t I do a TV podcast? I could talk about these shows all day! I listen while I’m cooking or walking and I feel sort of ridiculous but I also feel like I’m discussing the shows with friends. I’m mostly listening to the Afterbuzz TV podcasts and I’ve tried The Walking Dead ‘Cast and a few others. I wish I was technologically savvy enough to do one myself.
Well all known my stance on scarves and how too many scarves isn’t even a possibility, but these ones from Target are killing me. They are so soft and warm and wonderful. Actually, they are almost TOO warm as I wore one to the grocery store yesterday and nearly died of heat stroke. Still super cute though. They sort of (but not really) satisfy my I-want-a-Burberry-scarf-but-can’t-imagine-paying-for-one issue.
Let’s talk about candles since I’m such a sucker. Yes, I’m one of the crazy candle ladies. They replace cats for me. All time favorites? Leaves from bath and body works (shocking) and autumn wreath from yankee candle are staples that make me nostalgic and feel like home. But two that I burned this month that smell SO delicious are this oatmeal cookie (it has some spice!) and this tiny french bourbon vanille candle.
While I’m on the topic of scarves, I have to mention another one. It’s made it into my favorites before because I seriously feel like it’s the BEST infinity scarf ever. And it comes in a million colors. My brother and his fiancee got me this circle scarf from American Apparel two Christmases ago. It’s probably my most worn scarf. I want every color. Just LOOK at the colors!
The Trader Joe’s coconut chocolate almonds. OMG. Have you tried these? It’s an almond… covered in coconut… then covered in chocolate. DYING. They are ridiculous. And surprisingly enough, I find them to be the perfect snack that I only need a handful of. Gosh I love them.
More loving on Target? Of course. These boots! Yes, it’s true that I’ve hated nearly all the Target maternity things, but the regular stuff I normally enjoy still ranks pretty high up there. I got these on sale over a month ago and adore ’em. They are pretty comfortable too. And I love the taupe-ish shade. I am also loving my low freebird by Steven boots (pictured here) that I got two years ago. They are totally out of my comfort zone, but make me feel BAD. Yeah right.
This apple cider grilling sauce. I think it’s been a favorite of mine every year at this time, but it’s so good. Chicken, pork… even steak! Wings. WOWZA. I’ve been buying this for years and could eat it by the spoonful. I have an apple cider addiction right now.
When it comes to photo apps this month, I’m really liking the camera awesome app. Now, it won’t ever replace afterlight for me, which is the only app I use to brighten any of my iPhone photos. But the camera awesome app makes it easy to take silhouette photos (like we did here) and there is an awesome tutorial on Amanda’s blog. I’m learning!

The black truffle sesame salt is truly life changing, I made homemade pasta in creamy bacon Alfredo sauce with this sea salt, so much flavor!!! I tried the apple caramel sauce too, it so good, I keep dipping apples and pears in it, I am never to patient to make my own, and honestly I don’t have a problem with store bought stuff as long as it doesn’t have a thousand ingredients, so this one is really good.
I haveee to stay away from TJ’s coconut almonds.. chocolate covered nuts are my weakness! haha. And I have heard good thing about Amy’s book — I’ll have to check it out!
I feel so mHcg smarter after I listen to the Mad Men After Buzz podcast, like, they point out all kinds of hidden meanings and symbolism that I totally missed. Also I have those boots too :) #targetforeva
Woah!! That sea salt looks awesome!
Those Target scarves look like a copy of one they had at Zara last year. It was so huge and fluffy they started calling it a scarf-blanket (skanket? blarf?) and it was hugely hugely popular here in Spain. I didn’t get one and now I covet them jealously. Thanks for posting that link – I’m going to add that one to my Christmas list!
Ok, can we talk about The Affair for a minute??? THIS SHOW!
Pacey is ridiculous. Like when did THAT happen?? And WHO GOT KILLED? and the father in law? ugh. Also, they are SO getting caught.. they are all kissing and close talking all over the dang place. SOMEONE WILL SEE THEM!
Anyhow. Love it and wish I could binge watch it. Weeks are too long.
I am coming to your class Thursday at Crate. Will you have books to buy, or should I bring one to get signed? :) Can’t wait!
oh i’m so glad you’re coming!! crate doesn’t sell books, so if you want me to sign one, be sure to bring it!
I love a good circle scarf! So practical!
I seriously read Amy Poehler’s book in one night. ONE night! It’s great.
I am currently wearing that scarf from Target! It’s so cozy and wonderful. :)
Jessica, did you ever get into the HBO show Rome? I recently saw it was on Amazon Prime and I’m hooked. Downside is there’s only two seasons. But sooo good.
Have you seen the pumpkin caramel sauce at Trader Joe’s?? I bought some a couple weeks ago, and I’m not sure what I’m saving it for. Maybe to drizzle on a pumpkin cheesecake at Thanksgiving?!? I’m worried that once I open it, it will “disappear”…and I’ll never find it again at the store :(
I can’t wait to get my hands on Amy Poehler’s new book and read it. She is the best!

For the Breathe tanks, did you order a size up due to pregnancy or did you still order your normal size? I’m pregnant too and would like to try one but I’m not sure if my normal size will still fit the bump.
i am also loving The Affair! and the Target scarf which I got in the black/red version.. so soft! I definitely have to try the Athleta tanks. Have you listened to the Serial podcast yet? It’s from This American Life and it’s a season-long podcast about a murder case from 15 years ago.. I think you’d like it. I’m obsessed!
1. that caramel sauce looks AMAZING. i can’t even imagine the pumpkin.
2. those american apparel scarves…GIMME GIMME GIMME
3. LOVE virtually all boots by freebird. they are TOTALLY out of my comfort zone but i LOVE LOVE LOVE how gawdy and over the top they can be.
you must listen to the serial podcast — it is so addictive!!

Great finds! Thanks for sharing! I miss Target so much! I can’t even shop online for their products here in SK. I don’t know why, but there site is blocked over here. Also, I had forgotten about Amy Poehler’s book. I will have to give it a read :)
You should try listening to The Talking Dead Podcast (no affiliation to the show, Talking Dead). It’s 2 guys from Canada and they do a recap show and then a Listener Feedback show on Wednesdays. it fills my void for anything Walking Dead related while I wait for the next Sunday! It also helps me catch any small details I miss since I get ADD during hour long shows :)
I also signed up for your Crate cooking class tonight and cannot wait for soup (and bread)!
