Tuesday Things.
1. This is the 200th Tuesday Things! I’ve been babbling nonsense for 200 weeks. That’s scary. I’m sorry?
2. Craving this cantaloupe and kiwi aqua fresca. And summer.
3. I’m going to ask you something dumb. What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch? Like quick, on the go lunches… that aren’t so much leftovers? Right now I’m into the hard-boiled egg and hummus toasts from my cookbook.
4. This advice from Jeni Britton – like Jeni of Jeni’s ice cream. Ugh. How amazing is that?
5. I spent most of my night last night elbowing a loudly snoring husband who stole every cover. Is there something bigger than a king-sized bed? Probably. And it’s called the guest room.
6. Did you see that Starbucks is going to have s’mores frappuccino this summer?! I want to be excited, but I fear it will only taste like… sugar syrup. Is it going to be awful?
7. It’s okay to get lost. YEP.
8. I’m in major Mad Men lust at the moment. I think because there are only 3 left. I can’t get over Roger’s moustache though. Like, what? And what are your thoughts on Game of Thrones? I totally half ass watch that show, but Eddie loves it. Also, is Scandal redeeming itself? Did you want to beat Juliette on Nashville?
9. UMMM. Full House spinoff? It’s really happening. Dead.
10. On Sunday I actually did a little meal prep for this week and OMG IT IS SAVING OUR LIFE! I hope I can find time to do it every weekend. And it only took a little over an hour. Except let’s be real. The granola lasted two days.
11. This year, I’M DOING IT. I’m planting herbs and making sure they LIVE. I know I say it every year but I’m doing it for real. They need full sun right? What are your thoughts on those potted planters that are vertical? They look cute. I’m not planting in the ground yet. Oomph. I’m already worked up about it.

I have been making salads like crazy lately for lunch. A mix because I want something fresh and green after the long ass winter Boston has had and because I’m doing Whole30. I do mixed greens, diced english cucumbers, grape tomatoes, diced red onion (sometimes), toasted nuts (almonds mostly), some avocado, with an olie and vinegar dressing or a ranch dressing I make with homemade mayo. I often add sauteed chicken that I make big batches of or hard boiled eggs, again I do a dozen at a time.
I do a lot of meal prep too. I made a double batch of homemade mayo, roasted 3 bone in chicken breasts and then made a big batch of chicken salad for the week. Also, prepped chicken stir fry and did hardboiled eggs in the oven yesterday. I’m all for the meal prep!
yay #200!
I can eat mozzarella, tomato and basil sandwiches for lunch every day – with a drizzle of balsamico vinegar ! cheers to 200!
Hahahaha I’m usually #5 :)
I have a feeling that s’mores frapp is going to give me a cavity but i gotta try it!
GoT = <3 can't get enough of that show!! we anxiously wait for 9pm on Sunday's! Haha losers.
I can’t make it to 9:00 so I DVR it to watch Monday. Last night I fell asleep before 8:00 and still haven’t watched this week’s episode. I beat you for any #loser award.
Lunch- fresh spring rolls. Dooooooo itttttttttttttttttttt. Pickled veggies, plus lettuce, plus fresh herbs, plus one or more of the following, all tidy and portable in rice paper: a) beef teriyaki b) leftover chicken curry c) roasted butternut squash d) plain old leftover roast chicken plus sweet chili sauce e) shriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimp f) avocado g) duck! h) roasted & sliced pork loin i) dipping sauces!
omg i am SO doing this. thanks!!
#11 It’s soooooo much easier to keep things planted in the ground alive. Seriously. They need to be watered much less.
I can’t seem to find your granola recipe :( Since I’m on a seriously granola kick (ie: eat ALL the granola in one sitting)- do you mind pointing me in the right direction?
here you do! http://www.howsweeteats.com/2013/02/coconut-butter-granola/
For years, I ate some kind of salad for lunch but lately I’m all about sandwiches. Today is was smashed avocado, roasted turkey, sliced tomato and a little salt on thick wheat bread. If my pant size would allow, it’d be homemade pimento cheese every.single.day.
Seriously, I was convinced I’m the only one who kills herbs every single time I try. Since I know my track record, I go for the little baby starter kits from the dollar section in Target. They’re an easy way to get it up and running, and I’ve heard if you can master that, you can then transfer them to something pretty.
We’ll see if I can make it happen.
Luck!
i can’t wait to see what people say for lunches because i am in a serious lunch rut. I do love the hard boiled egg toasts lately as well.
GOT is awesome.
I can’t grow anything to save my life. My brother in law is a fabulous gardener though, so we just steal from him.
I need to do more meal prep.
Best quick lunch that is my go-to right now. Full fat (ughh i love fat) greek yogurt and cut up strawberries or any berry really, and honey. sooo fresh and so good. It’s perfect.
And good luck with the herbs. you don’t kill them trust me!! I just would not recommend planting them in the ground, just pots. Herbs are like weeks…they spread and never go away ;)
i can’t eat anything other than full fat yogurt now. it’s the best.
Love Game of Thrones. OBSESSED. My husband is always, “who is that” and I’m like SERIOUSLY WE WATCH THIS EVERY WEEK. I’m all in. ALL IN!!
I have a soft spot for Juliette on Nashville. I don’t think she wants to be how she is. She was just born to be toxic, poor thing.
Also, Don Draper for life. That man is timeless. I’d pay money to find out what he smells like. Unless that’s creepy. Sorry.
I totally have a soft spot for her too. I like it when she is wild and crazy.
#5 killed me
I LOVE s’mores! I read this on the interwebs at some point and became a fan. It doesn’t scream S’MORE! but it’s pretty damn good! Grande Caramel Macchiato + 3 pumps white mocha. You should download the starbucks secret menu app!
I’m due in July so I’m saving ALL of Mad Men until then… I’m going to need something to watch on Netflix when I’m not sleeping :) Related question! How long should I wait to make the lactation cookie dough if I want to freeze it? I was thinking of doing it in the next couple of weeks while I still have the energy but didn’t know if you’d made and frozen it or not!
ooooh good question. i didn’t freeze for super long since i made them after i gave birth. i would think they’d be okay for up to a month? i freeze other cookie dough for weeks at a time, just afraid these ones might end up a little dry if you do that??
I read on the interwebs somewhere that a caramel macchiato + 3 pumps white mocha = s’more latte. It doesn’t scream S’MORE!!!, but it’s pretty damn good. You should download the Starbucks secret menu app!!
P.S. this might come through twice because I fail commenting.
Congrats on 200!!!
I’m planting herbs too – it’s our first spring in our new house so I have no excuses. Except that dang black thumb.
I wrote a post about food bloggers’ fave lunches once when I was in a rut :) Feel free to delete if you’re not looking for links but it might give some inspiration: http://www.rachelcooks.com/2014/08/02/go-to-lunch-ideas-food-bloggers/
omg THANK YOU!!! xoxo
I have managed to keep my herbs alive for a couple months now! I just used a couple different sizes of planters, one is long and skinny so I have three different plants in there. I got starts from Trader Joe’s, and they are doing great (so far). I have rosemary, 2 kinds of oregano, thyme, sage, and mint. :) For some reason I always kill basil, so that’s the only one that didn’t survive, lol.
i always kill basil too! and everywhere i look it says “start with basil, it’s the easiest.” um, no.
Bigger bed = The California King. Warning: if you get that size, it’s damn near impossible to ever go smaller.
GOT- The red witch better watch herself around my guy! And more Dany please. Though her story line was so sad this week. She just wants to be an awesome ruler!
Lunches: salads with roasted veggies. I meal prep the veggies on Sunday. Last week it was roasted sweet potatoes and beets over mixed greens with a homemade honey mustard dressing. This week its roasted asparagus, carrots and bell peppers with pasta and a balsamic dressing. It needs to all be done on Sunday. Do not have the time to prep anything before work!!
for some reason i thought the cali king was just longer – not wider??
I’m a huge fan of ‘breakfast for lunch!’… kind of odd, yes, but I’ve been loving it lately. I have a huge sweet tooth, so it’s really just an excuse to eat dessert-like things in the middle of the day. Current favorites include plain oatmeal w/ toppings, sugary cereals + greek yogurt, pop tarts (I KNOW I KNOW) and toast w/ butter & cinnamon sugar. I am such a horrible person.
my horrible hero, you are!!
I won’t lie – I have welcomed back crazy Juliette with open arms. She was getting a little too soft on me. Except this past episode with the baby, that was kind of scary and I’m glad they didn’t go the way I thought they might. But crazy Juliette at her baby shower? That’s who I missed.
I’m with you – the show needs her like that.
Nashville is sucking lately! Juliette is so annoying, the Teddy thing was predictable and incredibly overdramatic, and is Gunner a crybaby or what? That whole thing is annoying and predictable as well. I was so embarrassed that my husband was in the same room while I was watching it. So… why am I still watching it?
I agree. I loved it SO much before. Now it’s just so… random/fluffy/unsuspenseful/etc? I’ll be really surprised if it’s renewed after this season.
Here’s an easy how-to garden in pots (my “Garden in the City”) http://www.funfitflavor.com/mostrecent/2014/28/5/garden-in-the-city-year-3?rq=garden%20in%20the%20city. Here is a follow up to the post. http://www.funfitflavor.com/mostrecent/2014/31/7/garden-update?rq=garden%20update Hope this helps! :)
omg. Words cannot explain how excited I am for the Full House spinoff, i can remember watching this show literally every day when I was a kid. I also have all seasons on DVD…. I cannot wait! (:
Juliette was pretty bad on Nashville. Though, I think it makes sense given her personality. It wouldn’t have been very realistic if all the sudden just because she gave birth that she is now a lovey, kind, warm person… But yes, it was bad. I love Avery though!
I love him too. So much.
I did not see that Starbucks is coming out with a s’mores frappuccino. I always try their new flavors!!
My go to lunch when I’m lazy… I buy a rotisserie chicken from Costco and one of their quinoa salads. Sunday night I divide it into 5 containers and, boom! lunch all week! Weekends when I have more time (read: not as lazy) green salads with veggies/protein, your lemon chicken salad, soups/chili. I always chop raw veggies on Sunday for snacks! And I make a batch of cookies (duh)!
I recently had a friend on Facebook who posted that she’s been having the same lunch for a long stretch and that it is causing a life crisis because she’s thinking that it makes her a boring person. I liked it! Her lunch was a baked sweet potato and avocado. I wish that I did more meal prep, but I have been doing a lot of batch cooking and eating leftovers.
Do you feel like Mad Men isn’t wrapping up quickly enough? I am getting worried that I won’t be completely satisfied with the ending.
I do feel that way – BUT, I always feel that way with shows I love. I just don’t want it to end, so I’m not sure if I’ll be happy or not.
The #1 reason why I keep following you is for your Tuesday Things posts. I like the other stuff too, but Tuesdays are my favorites!
dont laugh. But I cannot stop eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Oh my goodness. I came home and there was no PB. Husband had taken it to work. I was so mad. I’d been craving that sandwich all day. Oh my goodness. Had to get some immediately.
I eat those for breakfast all the time!
Yes, there is something bigger than the king sized bed. It’s called the California king and it is glorious! My mom had one when I was a kid and in the summers, my mom and all four kids would sleep in the giant bed together, comfortably.
this makes me so happy. I can just imagine all those kids in the bed!
A few months ago I saw the S’mores bottled Frappuccino at the corner store near my house. I stare at it every time I stop in, contemplating it, but always pass (I always feel like a frappuccino in the plastic cup is more worthy than the bottled drink). Also, apparently they have the Mocha Coconut in the bottled variety, too.
Apparently the s’mores tastes like marshmallow and coffee (no chocolate, no graham).
This is a lot of words about s’mores drinks.
Aka, you are the best and inspire me.
When I have no leftovers to take for lunch, I just bring this in a ziplock: a couple pieces of deli ham with provolone slices in the middle. All the savory/salty/fatty tastes I want, and no bread to weigh me down. (and I usually make a bunch of roasted veggies at the beginning of the week to pack alongside that)
Intrigued by the s’mores frapp! Will try regardless of potential early onset diabeetus.
My husband is 6’5″ & I am 5’5″. We discovered in college that separate blankets is the ONLY way to go. I use 3 and he uses 1 and there’s no fighting. We make the bed by throwing a king size quilt over the mess. I then use it folded up at night. Separate blankets = marital bliss.
I am bad about lunch because I eat with our 16 month old. Parisian picnics are where it’s at. Meat, cheese, bread, veggies cut up, fruit & nuts. And whatever delightful leftover lunch is thrown all over the kitchen by little man.
Yes, separate blankets is the BEST!! I actually saw it one time listed on a top ten best marriage tips and giggled :)
Ugh I know, Juliette needs a good smack! Poor Avery.
Also there are four episodes of Mad Men left but yes I’m so sad it’s ending! I relish every episode.
Secret – the best herb seeds are from Dollar Tree! Only .25 per pack so even if they die, you only spent $1 on 4 different kinds. I went on vacation and came home to them still dominating.
Yes! I got these too. I came home and planted them in pots and they are already coming up. I agree with the others about basil being delicate and temperamental. I live in CA where herbs grow like weeds but not basil.
I cannot wait till the S’mores Frappuccino makes it debut. I am sure it will be epic.
Stacy’s simply plain pita chips ,lemon hummus, black bean salad ,a drizzle of olive oil and toasted almonds. Oh and if Market Basket has it a raw Broccoli salad that has a little bit of onions and some nice bacon. It’s really good!
On the herbs…yes, the vertical things are cute, but do you want to USE the herbs you grow? Then you need bigger pots or…the ground. A couple batches of the blackberry thyme margaritas, and you’ve used all you thyme. I know Pittsburgh has harsher winters than we do here( in the Portland, OREGON area), but some herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, winter savory…do well in the ground and come back the next year. Others grow quickly in large pots, like lemon verbena, pineapple sage, summer savory…others should NEVER EVER go in the ground…mints and oregano…only in its, because you will never be in control again if you put the in the ground. And definitely basil. In the ground or a large pot. Small pots, small plants.
And dill and cilantro…ground or large pots.
The best advice I got about gardening is to water way less than you think you need to, and to make sure your herbs have enough room. Last year my parsley, basil, and mint grew out of control in the best way! I only watered them twice a week and sometimes not even that. You can do it! Good luck.
I saw this in my news feed and immediately thought of you. You HAVE to know. Starbucks is making a limited edition SMORES Frappuccino to be released on April 28th. SMORES…..for realz.
My husband slept in the guest bed last night – we have a very old dog, long story – it was glorious! We have a queen but I’m thinking a California King is where it’s at! Also, I bought a sound machine from BB&B. Lifesaver.
I’m obsessed with avocado toast. I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I legit cannot get enough. I can’t NOT eat an entire avocado in one sitting, though….so maybe that’s not good….
I want to grow herbs too! But I kill everything. I killed my potted geranium from my cousin’s bridal shower in approx. 2 days. I think it’s a record.
This! http://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/asian-quinoa-salad/ I make a huge container on Sunday and eat it through the week
I kill pretty much anything that grows, so my husband takes care of our “garden” (and by garden I mean our tiny little Vancouver apartment cement patio that we maximize with planters to try to grow enough things to make a salad every once in a while). I have NO idea what the weather is like in Pittsburg, but all our herbs stay in their own pots on a windowsill until about July and then only go outside July and August. Then they come back inside.
We’ve never been able to get basil to regrow well, so we just buy a fresh pot every year. Thyme, sage and rosemary grow beautifully! Kale grows like a weed, even in our somewhat shallow planters outside. Someone gave me the wonderful advice that in the fall the plants that are in pots should go up against your house to take in some of the residual heat and it works like a charm!
Hope that helps!
lunches: I’m in such a rut lately. I made my 7th (i think) pot of stew since mid-Jan on Monday because it’s cold and rainy (and a little snowy…sigh, Ontario). But that’s more a “leftover”-ish. Ah, if it’s not stew it has been snack plates with apple slices, cheese, meat, and hard boiled eggs or smashed avocado on sourdough if the sweet baby jesus gives me non-rotten avos.
Grey’s – did you watch last week?? The previews sucked me in and the episode was completely underwhelming. And they couldn’t have possibly killed Jake on Scandal, right? RIGHT!?? This better be a twist and Jake better be hot and shirtless on Thursday.
Good luck with the herbs! I can’t keep anything alive.
oh i could not agree more! there was barely ANYTHING about the derek storyline until the end. totally underwhelming. i do think he is going to die though. and jake…ugh. I know. wtf!
Congrats on the big 200! Jeni tells it like it is, she’s my ice cream Bat Girl!!
I think the S’mores Frap would count as lunch, right? :)
Actually if you like the bottled Frappacino, that is already out in the S’mores flavor. I saw it at a gas station, but opted for Mocha Coconut instead.
Lunch or snack- I’m hooked on toasted wheat or whole grain bread and then I spread it with coconut oil and top with nutritional (brewers) yeast. So Good!
My favorite lunch of late has been manchego y manzanas. Granny Smith apples, manchego cheese, walnuts, drizzle of walnut oil, bit of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of coarse salt.
Ditto on Jake/Scandal…I can’t imagine he made it through that, but ugh…he always plays the second fiddle boyfriend on every show I’ve seen him on, but I thought his part was big enough on this one to STAY…
Love Game of Thrones…and am currently all caught up in Outlander, though sometimes it moves slowly…acting is great…beautifully shot… and Jamie Fraser trumps Jake easily…I think…I don’t know , maybe that’s an apples and oranges kind of thing…
The advice from Jeni Britton…I NEEDED to read that today, so thanks for that…
