Grapefruit Daiquiris.
The grapefruit daiquiri is now my love language.
Oh boy. Is this delicious. !!!!
I’m at this very weird in between stage where certain friends have kids that are older than Max and other friends don’t have kids at all, and in fact no one around me (like, an old time heart-to-heart friend) has a baby right about Max’s age.
This is very (not-so) important because if you’re attempting to lunch or coffee talk or happy hour with baby in tow, it’s barely a conversation since you’re chasing a little love nugget all over the place. And I’m not about to go to one of those cesspool indoor playgrounds at the mall. I mean, this is my first kid and all. He’s practically wrapped in bubble tape 24/7. Now if baby number two or three or four comes along, it might be an option.
Rather, it might be the only option.
So quite frankly, if we’re being honest in our circle of trust here, I‘m trying to figure out the perfect warm weather cocktail that I can pour in a pitcher and walk around my neighborhood with in order to gain friends. Yes, I’m begging for friends in my exact same life stage that live right near me so when I need to have a mom meltdown, I can simply walk down the street with a pitcher of rum instead of get in my car and drive to Target. (obviously NOT with rum.)
Target is robbing me of house and home, for pete’s sake. It’s doing wonders for my nail polish collection though.
I mean, I would TOTALLY want to be friends with someone who walked onto my driveway with a pitcher of alcohol. In a non-creepy way of course. It’s 2016 and we need to clarify those things.
Okay, so maybe I’m not exactly BEGGING for friends in my same life stage, but that’s sort of what it feels like some days, especially on the days where I send video snapchats to my invisible internet friends and try to cheers a daiquiri on the screen.
True life: back in the day, my cousin and I used to try to pass food and drink through the phone. Please tell me you did this. Lacy and I would spend HOURS on the phone (even though we, um, lived ten minutes from each other AND went to school together up through high school…) and in the early years, tried to shove cereal and candy through the phone to each other. I swear to god that to this day, one of phones in my parents’ house has Special K vanilla clusters crusted into the speaker.
And I know what you’re thinking: why is that phone even still in existence? I don’t know. One will never know.
It should also be noted that I call those “real” phones. Real phones, because apparently my iPhone is a fake phone. Riddle me that.
It’s no secret that I’m a huge (huge!) fan of grapefruit everything. Give me allll the grapefruit things and no one will get hurt. I’ve never been the person who covers their grapefruit in sugar or salt – I love it straight with a (grapefruit) spoon. BUT, I do super love sugary grapefruit treats. Like, DeLallo has these dried candied grapefruit slices? OMG. I die.
Perhaps I should just walk around with a bowl of those to gain friends. It might work better.
I wanted to share a perfect spring cocktail today – something that would work for this Easter weekend if you’re celebrating or something that would just work because, hello – it’s spring! The daiquiri has rum, grapefruit, a splash of lime, some cherry juice (I use these legit maraschino cherries!) and simple syrup – it’s my sweet grapefruit shock.
And we can totally be friends if you make one, sooooooo. There’s that.
Grapefruit Daiquiris
Ingredients
- 2 ounces white rum
- 2 ounces freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
- 1 1/2 ounces simple syrup
- 1 ounce maraschino cherry juice
- splash of coconut milk, if desired!
- splash of lime juice
- splash of selzter
- cherries for garnish
- grapefruit wedges for garnish
Instructions
- Add the rum, grapefruit juice, syrup, cherry juice, coconut milk and lime juice to a shaker filled with ice. Shake for 30 seconds then pour into a frosty glass. If you’d like some bubbles, splash some seltzer on top! Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit and a few cherries.

Looks so refreshing, adding it to the menu for Easter. Im gonna have to sub vodka though (because vodka doesn’t trigger a migraine as much as other alcohol) and make it a martini!!
Yum! This sounds so perfect. I love grapefruit and I love rum – can’t beat that.
This looks wonderful! Makes me long for the warmer days that are coming.
I too am in the ‘I need friends with a toddler’ phase. I do believe your son and my daughter are pretty close in age, Piper was born in November. Too bad you’re in PA & I’m in VA.
ahhhh just a BIT too far. ;)
UM YOU NAILED THIS. IM DROOLING. what a good idea! I love love love it. im totally making a pitcher of these this weekend. done.
Well, one, these cocktails are gorgeous and sound delish! And, two, Kieran (only 2.5 months older than Max) and Max can be best friends…even if it’s only as invisible internet friends :)
okay that’s now a thing, max has an invisible internet friend too. wooooo!
I love the color of this! I might sub out my usual mimosas for this. Why start the weekend with champagne when you can start with rum ;)
Hahaha…how could anyone resist being your friend if you brought THIS over!!!! ;) Heck…please be my friend for that matter! Looking delicious and beautiful as always and totally wishing I had this to sip on for brunch. :)
This is perfect! I was requested to make Hemingway Daiquiris for Easter Brunch, I just went out and bought all the supplies. They’re basically the same thing but with Maraschino liqueur instead of juice. I haven’t tried one yet but these look great!
hemingway daiquiris?! i need more details! and apparently i also need some maraschino liqueur. why haven’t i heard of that?!
Hey Doll, please do reach out to your childless friends. It can be hard to be left behind when all of your friends suddenly have babies and only want to hang out with other moms. You might be surprised how much they enjoy helping you chase your love nugget around!
Hang in there.
oh no! i didn’t mean to make it sound misleading, i actually am with my childless friends all the time, like constantly – more than with my friends with older kiddos. they are wonderful with max!
You are welcome to walk over to my house with these any day. I have a 4 year-old but she can entertain Max and we can drink these.
Seriously, hang in there. The toddler years are lonely for all moms. Especially ones who work from home. (We don’t get out with grown ups in the office every day, but we aren’t stay at home moms either.) I feel for you. And if you ever want to stuff your face with Edgars tacos with me, I am in. ;)
Hey! It’s been forever since I’ve seen you, but I’ve been following the blog for-Ev-Er (yes, Sandlot style!). Feel free to reach out (we are still in the same area). I have little ones and my younger (of the 2) is right around Max’s age – she was born in November. I totally get where you are coming from though and would love to have a play date/ mommy sanity / target date anytime! :) Have a great Easter weekend!
Ditto on what Julie said about reaching out to your childless friends…esp if you break out the booze! We always come around for stuff like that! Lol But for real, I really miss my friends that have had kids and I feel like I’ve had to beat them over the head with my words of “hey! I still wanna hang out. Don’t care if you have a kid running amuck, I will meet you anywhere, anytime, I will come to your messy house, I don’t care. Please play with meeee!” Maybe your friends aren’t as awkward as I am, but I’m sure they feel the same way :)
Anywho
This cocktail…omg! I’m going to get a pedicure with a friend tonight and we always take booze with us. Usually a bottle of wine and some plastic cups, super classy. Or some beer. But I’m half tempted to make this up and take it with me tonight! It looks so refreshing and seriously perfect for spring!
ahh i totally didn’t mean it that way, i’m with my childless friends every week (and they are amazing with max, probably want to see him more than me, haha) – just wishing someone had a 15 month old that wanted to RUN. ;) i completely understand what you mean because so many of my friends had kids before me (like 5-7 years before me!) and i missed hanging out with them too!
Gorgeous drink blender – vintage? Would love to get one like it!!
i got it at anthropologie! probably 3-4 years ago??
OKKKKK. You’ve made the decision for me! I’m moving next door and having a baby ;) Connor will get on board eventually.
We only recently started to get into grapefruit so this comes just in time!!
Long time reader, first time (I think?) commenter, but I just had to say that these photos are STUN.ING. The tulips are gorg, they match the cherries, and I love the gold accents from the shaker & spoon. Great job! (Also great job on the recipe, because, you know, it sounds fantastic.)
Let’s be best friends. My son is 14 months old and I totally hear you on the friends thing. And this drink…woah. I need it now, yes, 10:32 am now!
This drink looks absolutely delicious! I’ve never had any kind of grapefruit drink so this is def worth a try! Thank you :)
Oh my goodness I want that immediately! That’s an acceptable workday drink, right?
yessss, I want these!! They’re so gorgeous and perfect for springtime! I wish we could shove food through computer screens. :)
Cannot wait to make this drink this weekend, getting supplies tomorrow. I have friends in my neighborhood (for the 1st time, since I was a kid) and we cross each others yards with bottles of wine and cheese under the arm, sometimes (many times) nachos or chips, but still run to Target for meltdowns. Nothing like getting Essie nail polish at Target and chocolate after a hard week. Target takes my money, too. Growing up my Mom used to take my sister and I to Walgreen’s for meltdowns (that was my Mom’s meltdown place apparently). Now I take my son to Target, he loves it! Who wouldn’t?

How about swapping the seltzer with ginger beer?
A) this looks AMAZING and I want it rightthissecond.
B) I hear you on the mom-friend thing! My friends’ kids are mostly older or they live far away from me. Wah! I don’t live in a neighborhood, either. We’re a little more off the beaten path. Even so, I think I’d welcome any fellow mama of a toddler to my house if they showed up with a pitcher of these drinks! :)
You’ve had Stiegl’s Grapefruit beer, right? My brother had me try it and I was like “This is beer? It tastes like grapefruit!! I could drink so many of these….”
https://www.stiegl.at/en/brands/range/main-range/stiegl-radler-grapefruit
It’s my goal in life right now to find someone to walk around the neighbourhood with – babies in strollers and wine in the stroller cupholders! If that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right.
My Max is a year younger than your Max, AND I live in Canada! Otherwise, perfect. :)
I actually miss the days of spending hours on end talking to my best friend even though we had just spend 97% of the day together! It gets harder to make friends as I get older. I’m just not meeting as many people in the same walk of life. BUT I think the friends I have will LOVE me for making a big pitcher of this!!

same! seriously when my BFF leaves, even if we’ve chatted for 4 straight hours (with 5 kids running around) it feels like we could talk for 10 more days.
Oh girl, I’m in the same boat with few mama friends with babies in play date age that coincides with mine! And I’d love girlfriends close enough to stroll over to for happy hour. My husband and I LOVE these- we saw them in a coastal living or something years ago called Hemingway daiquiris and have been a house favorite ever since!
yes yes! stroll + cocktails sounds so perfect.
Just bought the ingredients to make these..Making them for my annual family reunion on Saturday and for Easter! Obsessed with that cocktail shaker and your styling on these is perfection!
thanks so much girl!!! :) let me know if you like them!

Jessica! I’ve been an email receiver of yours, since finding some ridiculously scrumptious recipe, for awhile now…but I did that to way too many & got scared so I stayed away from my (much needed cause I shop with that email) stopped owning emails when one day it said 6,439?….?….?….? But TODAY! Decided to go in. Thank God yours was first because you are HILARIOUS. love love loved reading the post. My babes are in their 20’s now (howthehelldidthathappen) but been there…can totes relate. So funny. And! I love Grapefruit too….AND! I soooo need someone funny & interesting to follow…AND! If you lived in the Derby City I would ABSOLUTELY walk up your drive with a pitcher of Le Alc!…2 even
Keep up the great work, I will follow. O! BTW! Where did you find that SaaaaWEET cocktail shaker?? I’ve been looking for one for about a year that I love & you found it!! Have a Sweet Easter!! I will now at my Easter All Day Buffet, with the icing on the cake….Grapefruit D’s?
You just put my two favourite things together and now I’m not sure an acceptable drinking hour can come soon enough!
I don’t have a child Max’s age and in fact I have 3 girls. (15,12,&3!!) but I still would love to be your friend!! You are hilarious and I love your blog. Thanks for being such a great writer.
My kids are no longer toddlers (one of them stood in line with me for your book signing in Philly and was so excited to meet you) aaand I live on the other side of the state. So I’m 0 for 2. On another note, I’ve decided you are my “spirit” animal for drinks. At least one of us is benefiting from this relationship ;)
Except for the food and drink shoved through the phone thing, this entire post was ripped from my brain! You are me! Or I am you! Whatever! I love it. I need mom friends, too, not just those who exist on social media. And I need more grapefruit. (It is best plain, though.)
<3
This is SO relatable to me right now. You’ve put my thoughts into words, although my situation is slightly different- my husband and I are trying for kids and all my friends are single or just getting married and think we’re nuts. And we moved recently so I have no local friends. And Target, where do I begin…..good to know I’m not the only one feeling this way.
This cocktail seems perfect for summer days. I love grapefruit, so I will make it a try, maybe on this Sunday. Thanks Jessica for sharing this!
I really love to eat fruits and like nearly any things made with fruits including juices and cocktails. The hot days are comming, so why don’t make some cocktail for ourselve, family and friends, enjoy your cocktail and have friendly talks with them. Thanks Jessica for sharing this grapefruit daiquiris. I love it.
I love the taste of grapefruit, so this recipe can’t be anything but amazing!

I’m right there with you! No available mom friends to hang out with makes for a lonely day (or expensive, if you go to target)! I think my retired neighbor is avoiding me now because I talk her leg off if I see her out! My babe is 13 months, so not much younger than your little turkey. Also, these daiquiris look fabulous! I may just drink a pitcher and wander around the neighborhood looking for friends, too….wait…that’s not what you said! Oh well. ;) haha!

This looks so delicious! And your writing is so fun to read – your food blog is my fave. For real. PS if you love grapefruit anything, you should try Joy the Baker’s grapefruit white chocolate brown butter cookies – they are to die: http://joythebaker.com/2014/12/grapefruit-white-chocolate-brown-butter-cookies/
I made them recently with crushed pistachios on top (check out my instagram at @carlycraves if you want to see what they looked like).

Where is that shaker from?! I love it!
I met some really close friends through a mom’s group…Moms Club International has lots of branches, and there are also some meetup groups for moms… Good luck, I hope you can find peeps with similarly-aged children!
oh PS here is a link for finding the moms club chapter near you

If you showed up in my driveway with these I would maybe never let you leave! Ha! Literally every house on all sides, and across the street, have babies around Casper’s age and we sometimes chat on the street, but that’s it! Yes, I am an almost 32-year-old adult who is incapable of making friends.
