Tuesday Things.
1. Have you ever made homemade waffle cones? I am dying to do so. One of my first jobs at 16 was at an ice cream place and I burnt the heck out of my fingers each time making the waffle cones, but the smell was so amazing and has stuck with me. I need a waffle press or something, right?
2. Could I be any more in love with this magic butterfly pea lemonade?! Whoa.
3. Okay major question: do you sort and match ALL of your socks? You know how the laundry ghost makes certain socks disappear? Well if I don’t have matching ones by the time I’m putting laundry away, I will match some that are *close enough.* I realize this gives people major anxiety.
4. We booked a last minute trip to Maine! We’re so ridiculously excited so give me alllll your recommendations please. We’re staying in Portland. What should we do and most importantly, EAT?!
5. Over the weekend we started binging on Ozark on Netflix. I am LOVING it. Eddie really likes it too. I was not a huge fan of Breaking Bad (yes I know, I should be excommunicated from the universe for saying so) but love this. And I started watching Friends From College too and really love it. Still watching Ballers and Insecure on Sunday nights, but that’s about it!
6. Also, I can’t get enough of all of the Princess Diana specials. The day she died my mom was so upset and I find it so interesting to see and hear more about her right now.
7. On raising creativity… I love this! I have worked so hard on my mindset when it comes to Max and letting him make creative messes and be a kid. My mom never freaked out if we made a mess when I think back to it. So I let him help me cook, draw, paint, get muddy, covered in dirt, play with dough in tons of flour and just clean it up later. And I don’t remember the cleaning part.
8. Speaking of, what is your all-time favorite pen? As a major pen-and-paper person, I still can’t find one I LOVE right now. I’ve been keeping up with my bullet journal (yes, a post is finally coming with it!) and I use the Staedtler fineliners for that, but I don’t omglove them for general writing. You know?

Portland is the best! The brown butter lobster at Eventide is life changing. I seriously think about it once a week! Also holy donut and standard baking company are wonderful! You guys will have so much fun!!
Eventide is a MUST as well as Duckfat. Gorgeous Gelato is another not to be missed, it’s absolutely amazing. You will love it there, one of my favorite places.
THESE!!!
I love LOVE these pens!

Holy Donut!!! I’m not even a donut person and these were life-altering. I’m a better person for having tried them. It’s all potato-based and excellent and the SWEET POTATO one is just….wow. wowwwoow. it’s a must. And yes re: Eventide, but i gotta say, I liked Bite of Maine’s lobster roll more!! Also, go to Boda and get the quail eggs. They are UNbelievable.
And re: pens – my coworker has this one https://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Hi-Tec-C-Maica-Gel-Pen-0.4-mm-Blue-Black/pd/10195 … for now, that is. Until i steal it because it writes perfectly and just makes you want to doodle EVERYWHERE because it’s so write-able
This is my pen of choice these days — nothing super fancy, but I love the way it writes!

I live in NH and I grew up in MA and consider myself a DIE HARD New Englander…can you believe I’ve NEVER been to Portland!? It’s a disgrace and hypocrisy! Here is what I’ve heard from valid sources.
Duckfat (http://duckfat.com/) is amazing but always busy so East Ender (http://eastenderportland.com/) right next door is a delicious substitute. Gelato Fiasco (I’ve had it) is DELISH. Scratch Baking Co. is a must and I heard The Well is a remarkable place for dinner. https://www.thewellatjordansfarm.com/
Standard Baking Co- I seriously cannot talk this place up enough. The desserts were deliciously rich, and the bread tastes like how all bread should taste and never does. Seriously, I feel like this place as ruined all other bread for me forever, it’s THAT good.
Holy Donut is a must.
Eventide Oyster Co had incredible lobster rolls
Bard Coffee (delicious hipster coffee)
I second Standard Baking Co! And Otto for delicious pizza!!
Yes on Standard Baking! My husband gets bread and dessert from there most Friday nights (after going to Harbor Fish to get dinner).
My favorite pens are really basic but they write so smooth. I just ordered in some for the new school year because I couldn’t find them in the store. They are the blue Paper Mate Ink Joy 1.0 mm medium point ballpoin pen. I do a lot of writing but nothing fancy – thanks grad school – and they are perfect for that type of task. Also the blue is very pleasant.
OMG I’m so excited for you – Portland is the BEST place for a foodie! Everyone has already mentioned Holy Donut, but I’ll say it again because you have to go there. Duckfat is delicious for sandwiches, fries, and a milkshake. Paciarino is some of the best Italian I’ve ever had (and I’ve been to Italy). Hot Suppa is great for breakfast. There are so many great places, but you will have to stay for a month to try them all!
I loved Friends From College, I actually contemplated watching it again just because it made me laugh that hard. Here are my Portland recommendations:
Lobster Shack (http://lobstershacktwolights.com): About 10 minutes outside of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. Gorgeous view, quintessential Maine lobster place.
Seaglass (https://www.innbythesea.com/menus/portland-restaurant/#613): Also in Cape Elizebeth, the hotel we’ve stayed at before has a great restaurant with a gorgeous view and outdoor seating.
Duckfat (http://duckfat.com): Very popular place for sandwiches and lighter lunches.
Riboletta (http://ribollitamaine.com): More dining, but really good Italian food.
Gilberts (http://www.gilbertschowderhouse.com): Always gets rated best chowder and good seafood.
Poms (http://www.thaitastemaine.com/menu_pomsthai.html): If you want something different, really food Thai good.
Gorgeous Gelato (http://www.gorgeousgelato.com): Best ice cream/gelato we’ve ever had. Amazing.
I was going to come on and tell you about the The Holy Donut but I see that so many others already have!! Portland is great- all of Maine is really- I hope you have a great trip!
I’m from Maine….we spoke about this in email when I won the Christmas give away purse, which I’m currently using (thank you).
Street and Company is one of the best places you will eat at. It is small but SOOOO good. Make reservations…it’s usually sold out. Flatbreads is a great pizza place with the best brownie dessert – evah!! email me with any questions! OMG – have the best time ever!
I’ve been loving the Papermate ink joy gel pens lately, in fun colors of course! Been thinking about starting a bullet journal but OMG it sounds like a lot of work! Looking forward to reading your post about it :)
we just started Ozark too, and are OBSESSED. i had no idea it was going to be so gooooood!!! and i’m with you on the sock thing – mine seem to disappear at an alarming rate, but i feel badly throwing out the one that didn’t go missing! such problems…haha
I live outside of Portland and agree with what everyone has said so far.
Check out Portland Food Map for ideas: http://www.portlandfoodmap.com/MapView.html
My vote is for Silly’s – it has a little something for everyone and has ginormous cakes – literally, a slice of cake could be a entire cake in itself. Take a cruise on Casco Bay – you can do the mail boat run and also a sunset cruise. The tasting menu at Evo is also mind blowing. The Great Lost Bear is good for casual dining.
I went to college in Maine and return every summer – couldn’t love it more.
You *have* to check out the Children’s Museum – it’s the best one I’ve ever been to –
And while I second Duckfat (the creme anglaise milkshake!), Standard Baking Co, and Holy Donut, we just went to Fore St. for the first time, and it was mind-blowingly good – I thought better than Eventide (oh!)
We just went to Portland in April. I definitely recommend Duck Fat– get the poutine. I also recommend Empire Chinese Kitchen —get the green beans. Might be the best thing I have ever eaten. I also recommend driving to Ogunquit and walking the marginal way.
Okay everyone else said this but you H A V E to try the Holy Donut in Portland! I drive from New Hampshire to go there. Its seriously so amazing! Portland has some amazing food choices. Duckfat is a must! For the best fried seafood skip over the border to New Hampshire and try out Petey’s in Rye. It’s about an hours drive from Portland. Hole in the wall local place. Take route 1A along the coast if you want to take in the beautiful New England coast. http://www.peteys.com/
OH! And King Henry VII Carvery for bomb sandwiches.
Ahh for Pizza you HAVE to got to Miucci’s!!!!! It’s an Italian grocery store on India street and every day they make the best Sicilian slab pizza. Seriously, other people have written about it it is so good : http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2011/05/portland-me-micuccis-sicilian-slabs.html
OMG your coming to New England. Portland, Maine is perfect. I am going to echo some comments above, Duck Fat for Lunch (be prepared to wait), Holy Donut (they sell out so get there before noon), The Corner Room is awesome for brunch (they make all their bread), and the best lobster roll I have ever had is from The High Roller Lobster Co. (a food cart!) .
Does your husband enjoy craft beer? If so you must go to Bissel Brothers, its one of the best in NE. And NE is kicking butt with craft beer lately!
Duck Fat and the Honey Paw are absolute musts! You’ll love Portland!
Super recommend Honey Paw. It’s right next to Eventide, I was there last weekend for lunch on a Saturday and Eventide’s line was around the corner, while Honey Paw had almost no wait at all. Eventide IS also good, though. Both places have great beer lists…like most places in Maine. If you’re into beer, definitely also schedule a tour at Allagash – their facility is amazing and their patio is really nice. There’s a few other smaller breweries right across the street, too. Bissel Brothers and Oxbow are also really good and have tap rooms closer to downtown. Novare Res is a cool beer bar, tucked away with a nice patio and good bar food.
Holy Donut sustained me on the drive back – they ARE really good. Really light and fluffy, not too sweet. I grabbed some right before lunch on Saturday from the location a bit farther from downtown, and while they were out of a lot of the flavors people rave about, I still left with 4 super delicious donuts (the fruity ones – Lemon and Pomegranate – were actually my favorites, but the chocolate sea salt and coconut were also good. Plus the pomegranate is hot pink!).
I was in town for a wedding farther north, near Bath, and if you have time to find your way up there, Five Islands Lobster Co in Georgetown was the best lobster roll I’ve ever had (definitely more “classic” than Eventide’s fancy brown butter spin, though) and the drive and town are both disgustingly, perfectly scenic.
The pork buns at Pai Men were out of this world and their beer list is killer. They have a nice lunch deal too. I heard really good things about their parent restaurant, Miyake, too.
Hot Suppa and Dutch’s were both on my list to try for breakfast, but my AirBnB included breakfast so I never made it to them. But the internet says great things!
I am also a super weird pen nerd but I’ve been loving the PaperMate Ink Joy gel .7 https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-Inkjoy-Medium-Assorted/dp/B019QBOG3U/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1502818562&sr=1-1&keywords=papermate+inkjoy+gel+pens and also the Zebra Sarasa .7 (NOT the regular Zebra gel ones…those are BAD!). Get these ones https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-Retractable-Medium-Point-ZEB46810/dp/B001BZ4ROI/ref=sr_1_22?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1502818481&sr=1-22&keywords=zebra+pens&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A6156540011
Duckfat for SURE for the poutine– it’s out of this world! Go for a large, and the duck egg on top. Eventide is the perfect place to pass the time waiting for a table at Duckfat– when I was there this weekend the John’s River and Basket Island were amazing! Standard baking is definitely worth a visit, but I’d also add Tandem for great scones and coffee. Urban Farm Fermentory has some really interesting, off the beaten path drinks you can sample (jun, gruit, mead)– their wildflower jun is so light and beautiful, and perfect for a warm day when you don’t want something super alcohol-y!
Pilot Precise V-5 for life. I have terrible handwriting that is rendered marginally more legible by a fine tip, so the V-5 is a must. Also this ink dries quickly, which is a must.
I second Eventide!
Also outside of Portland, if you have a car, take a trip to Cape Elizabeth (Portland Head Light is there too!) and go to the Lobster Shack. A short drive that is worth it for the fresh lobster rolls and the views from the (almost all outdoor) restaurant right on rocky shore. Cape Elizabeth also has a nice public beach!
i’m super into pricess di these days too…i can’t get over the fact that she was only one year older than i am now when she died :-O
These pens are everything!

TheFauxMartha did a recent post about homemade waffle cones. Not sure if it was her writing or the black cocoa that inspired me to want to buy a waffle cone maker, but I did! You definitely burn your fingers, but it’s all worth it. The maker that I bought came with a waffle cone roller and bowl press (the waffle cone maker TheFauxMartha suggested was backordered for months)
I ended up making the bowls for a get together I had at my house. The recipe in the book was not good, but TheFauxMartha’s was spot on delicious. And that smell…ahhh, SO good!

YES PORTLAND.
Eventide lobster for the brown butter lobster roll. Holy Donut (we had their donuts for our wedding dessert… dark chocolate sea salt and coconut are my faves.) Duckfat. Central provisions. Fore Street Restaurant. El Corazon (taco truck). Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth. If you are staying right in the old port, there are lots of great little shops and places to duck in for a drink/snack. I haven’t been since we’ve had our babies. I remember going to the Children’s Museum as a kid and if the victorian mansion is open, that’s a great see (even better at Christmas because it’s decorated so beautifully). If you do some research, you can find ample places for a picnic. Freeport is a quick trip… there you have LL Bean and a myriad of other outlets… Vineyard Vines, GAP, some other high end places. Not too far to the south, you have Kittery which also is a shopper’s paradise (outlets) but is spread out. York beach is nearby and popular… you can find lots of seafood in this area. Enjoy!!
Nooooooo you can’t do that with the socks! It just compounds the problem! The other sock usually turns up eventually, but now you won’t be able to find ITS mate, because you’ve already paired it with another one. Haha you are right, this actually made me feel anxious
omg..giving your socks the incorrect companion is downright frightening!!! My husband will wear the same color socks but they will have a different color bottom (like the part that has the brand/grip part of sock) and it drives me INSANE!! There should be a mini washer/dryer that comes with all sets that is just for socks/undergarments so that they don’t get eaten up by the scary large machines!!!!
Agree with all the Portland recs. Would add that Duckfat gets busy, but East Ender next door is just as good (if not better). Fore Street for dinner–same owners as Standard Bakery, wood fire grill–unreal food. Also excellent mocktails. Maps is a hipster basement bar that is good for if it is rainy–I loved them while pregnant cause my husband could get drinks, but they serve coffee, tea and CAKE too. And second the Miucci’s slab pizza. Flatbread Co on the water is great with kids. Portalnd is THE BEST.
Check out Vena’s Fizz House! They have exciting nonalcoholic drinks (for you) and cocktails (for Eddie). They’re a block or two in from the water and have a store too, with vintage bar things and fancy bitters.
RSVP Pens for life! Only the fine tip though.
My fave pens are the Pilot G-2 0.7 mm! Fun colors, too! That 20-pack on amazon is singing to me.
I also love the Zebra Jimnie Gel Roller Ball, but only in blue for some reason. That’s what I use at work.
Portland is amazing!!! I spent 8 summers in Maine and we always made Portland, specifically “Old Port”, a very important day trip. The best wood fired pizza I’ve ever had is at the Flatbread Company! And they have this yummy, huge, refreshing salad with lots of goat cheese to eat with the incredible pizza. Major carmelized onion action, casual atmosphere, views of the port, and just all around great experience! Don’t miss it!
So excited you’re coming to Portland! I live here and it’s one of the greatest places ever.. I think I’ve been to nearly 95% of Portland’s restaurants, it’s where all my money goes..
Baharat!!!! Defintely my favorite restaurant at the moment, I go probably once a week. It’s Middle Eastern/mediterranean style foods. Make sure you get the all in….Boda is amazing for thai food, Empire is chinese, Taco Escobarr has really great tacos, Fore Street is probably one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been too. It’s definitely pricey but worth the hype, just make sure you make reservations ahead of time. Hot Suppa has a great breakfast/brunch and is right across from Tandem Coffee.
I think it’s worth it to drive into Cape Elizabeth. They have really nice beaches and Fort Williams has one of the most photographed lighthouses, it’s a must see. The Lobster Shack is close where you get basic seafood but it has one of the greatest views. Not sure where you guys are staying, but the Old Port is probably where people spend the most time with all the restaurants and little shops. But also walking up to the Eastern Promenade is really fun, there are usually food trucks, and it has amazing views.
Have so much fun! I’m always so jealous of people who get to experience it here for the first time. Its pretty special.
I love, love, LOVE Maine. I lived about an hour-ish outside of Portland in NH for a few years a adored visiting. It’s so cute. Take a harbor cruise – you’ll likely get to see seals!
I’m sure people have already recommended these food places but Duckfat is a must for poutine (it’s tiny and you’ll likely have to wait), The Holy Donut for the chubbiest potato donuts, Blue Rooster Food Company for fast service lunch, Bard Coffee. If you have time, check out Brunswick, Bath, Boothbay, Damariscotta, or any other smaller Maine town just north of Portland. They’re the cutest and you can get lobster practically right off a boat! Definitely find time to get lobster from a tiny shack (or anywhere). It’s the best. Kennebunk, Wells, Ogunquit, And York are amazing little beachy towns just south. You genuinely can’t go wrong on the coast of Maine! Have the best time, I’m so jealous!
All the places I would recommend in Portland have been mentioned, but I have to chime in in the love for Hot Suppa (breakfast) and Fore Street for an amazing dinner. If you have a car, consider driving up to Reid State Park for a walk on the beach, and a stop at 5 Islands in Georgetown for a quintessential lobster roll experience (Reid and 5 Islands are near each other about 45 min north of Portland). And, take a boat tour! The Casco Bay mail boat run from Portland is fun.
Holy Donut and Duck Fat are great! One of the best meals I had in Portland was at Sur Lie, you can do a tasting menu which we did for my bachelorette and you basically sampled the entire menu, or you can just order separate tapas. The food was unreal! We went to Eventide for brunch and it was really good too!
sharpie pens for the win! :)
Holy Donut is amazing. My personal recommendation though? Get out of Portland. The magic of Maine is really in the forests, in the water, and in the small towns.
Just went to Portland in July! So many good restaurants but book reservations now! They get insanely booked. Street & Co and its sister restaurant Fore STreet were highly recommended. They only take a few reservations though. We called and they were booked but then we got a call back getting off the waitlist for Street & co – worth it!
Eventide is worth the hype but the wait times are ridiculous. They do a texting system though, so put your name in before you’re hungry then go walk around. Lunch seemed easier to get in then dinner
We got great egg sandwiches at Katie Made Bakery! Holy Donut was excellent too
Oh and my favorite was Vena’s Fizz House for cocktails! They have some amazing creations but they started as a mocktail bar! So they have plenty of awesome mocktails for pregnancy :) and small snacks for Max if needed
Pingback: Tuesday Things. – Fruitide
Portland Pie Company is a great pizza spot. Also, I use Pilot Acroball for everything: at work, in my bullet journal and at home: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009QYH892/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Putting in another recommendation for the decadent lobster roll at Eventide. I daydream about it often. And Hot Suppa is definitely wonderful too. The pulled pork Benedict and the corned beef hash are great.
But how has nobody mentioned THE GREATEST ICE CREAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD? Catbird Creamery in Westbrook, a short drive from Portland. It’s just a hole in the wall but OMGGGGG. I am an ice cream maniac, and everywhere I go, I look up the best ice cream places. I consider myself something of a connoisseur. I have had Jeni’s, I have had Salt & Straw. Catbird beats them all. The strawberry is the platonic ideal of strawberry ice cream. It has ruined all other strawberry ice creams for me. And the guy who runs it is the nicest fellow. GO GO GO!
Also the Sunflower Farm Creamery is a fun scenic little goat farm. You can hang with the adorable goats and buy fresh cheese and cajeta! If Max is going he’d probably have fun!
omg portland is one of my favorite food cities, hands-down. i just opened up the new west elm there, so i’d recommend walking in to the store and asking any of the associates their favorites. yes, duckfat, et all are great, but ask a local. they’ll give you less tourist-y recommendations.
scales, the drifters wife, and sur lie are a little more under the radar and amazing.
also, go to vena’s- they do great cocktails AND mocktails! perfect for those who may be 🤰🏻!
We took our 18mo on the “ice cream train” that Portland’s train museum runs on Fridays. Just (free) Dixie cups but the ride was the perfect length and a great time to relax after a long day! Our son loved waving to everyone and checking out all the boats in the water. Children’s museum is a must, and we checked out a few of the city’s playgrounds between meals and he loved those too. Everyone gave great recommendations for food- I’ll add Bam Bam Bakery (gluten free but you wouldn’t know…really good) and Longfellow Books. Have an amazing vacation!
Unrelated to any of the above, but did you see this?
