Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts.
If I’m talking about brussels sprouts on a Friday, you know they must be good.
Sweet and spicy brussels sprouts are currently theeeee most requested side dish in our house right now.
Even if it’s just me making the requests. Oops.
So I stole the sauce/marinade from this sweet and spicy pork shoulder. I freaking love that recipe. It’s so delish served with the sesame cucumbers – ah! I’m craving it right now.
I wanted to do something else with brussels though. They might just be my favorite vegetable, which is probably not a line you’d ever think you’d read over here.
It’s true though!
Why did they used to have such a bad rap?
I most definitely remember heading over to my neighbor’s house on Saturday night to watch Snick (we watched every Saturday!) and one night when I walked in the door, she was sitting on the living room floor with a plate of steamed brussels sprouts.
Almost died, right there.
I was like WAIT PEOPLE ACTUALLY EAT THIS?
And I certainly didn’t think I would ever be the one to actually eat them.
But I am! And I’m shocked. Still.
Even as much as I was all those years ago when I attempted them for the first time, making them with bacon and potatoes.
One of the reasons I love brussels so much, aside from their deliciousness, is that I find them super satisfying. I find them more satisfying than broccoli or kale. I also love them with bacon and cheese but can do them with just salt, pepper and olive oil. I love them slightly crisped and roasted. I wouldn’t ever be able to do them steamed though. Yikes.
This recipe makes all my brussels dreams come true, because I’m a huge sweet + savory freak. I might even be known to grab them out of the fridge cold for a snack or throw the leftovers in an omelet. Maybe.
Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts
Ingredients
- 2 pounds brussels sprouts stems removed and halved or quartered
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup chili garlic paste
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil for drizzling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment or paper.
- Place the brussels sprouts in a large bowl. In a smaller bowl whisk together the soy sauce, chili garlic paste, honey and hoisin until combined. Pour the sauce over the brussels and toss well until the brussels are all covered.
- Dump the brussels on the baking sheet and toss some more if necessary. Drizzle with sesame oil. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the brussels are golden and bubbly.

SNICK!!! That orange couch.
I’m one of those weirdos who loves plain, steamed brussels sprouts; but these? Beyond delicious.
snick was the best!!
I do think the bad rap came from poor preparation. I love any vegetable roasted (except Beets) but I can truly say that I adore roasted brussels sprouts. These look delicious and will be made immediately. I actually picked up some purple brussels the other day! I had never seen them before.
oh how fun! i don’t think i’ve seen them either. :)
I hated beets also until I tried golden beets, much different flavor and great for roasting!!
Yes! Delicious! Roast with olive oil, minced garlic and salt &pepper. Wonderful….
If you have Smash Burger restaurant chain near you…they serve deep fried Brussels sprouts as a side to the burger!!!! They are sooooooo good.
ahhh i will have to check!! YUM.
Could you make this with frozen Brussels sprouts?
My dad adores brussels sprouts and every year for his birthday my mom makes them steamed in butter sauce (delicious). My husband loves them too! Previously I enjoyed them, but once I got pregnant with my oldest my sense of smell got insane and the smell of brussels in particular KILLED ME. One time I pulled up in the driveway and I could SMELL my husband’s brussels even though it was winter, all the windows were closed, and they were all eaten up and he had cleaned the kitchen! It’s been seven years now, and it never really went away. I can smell them for days after they are cooked. I’m fine with them in restaurants (maybe because food smells are consistently cycling through?) so our family rule is not at home. I wish I could get over it!
YUMMMM!!!! Brussels are my FAV veggie! Have you ever tried them grilled? We have a grilling wok. I usually chop ’em, toss ’em in EVOO S/P/G, and throw them in grilling wok until they get toasty – I cant wait to try this recipe both roasted AND grilled!

Made these and love LOVE them! We eat a lot of roasted veg, so I’m always looking to change it up. Thank you!
I made this two nights ago. I had some asparagus, so I roasted that too. It makes Brussels sprouts so good! Will definitely be making this again!

When I did this recipe, although I forgot the oil drizzle, they came out very soggy. I think I would put the oil on but wait until after cooked to put the sauce on.
What is chili garlic paste? Do you buy it or make it? These look delicious!
Buy it in the international isle, or if you can’t find it there, order from Amazon
I usually just make brussel sprouts with olive oil and salt/pepper- I love this fun twist on it! Our family loved the change in flavor. Super delicious!

Do you know if you can make these in the air crisped/fryer?
I didn’t have sesame oil or hoisin sauce, but I used sriracha sauce and olive oil and it was great, even with frozen brussel sprouts. I cooked them in a skillet on the stove and combined all the ingredients on medium high to get a char grilled appearance.
These are delicious! I had some left over spicy mayo from a sushi order and I dipped them in that just to see how it tastes – it was a pretty nice combo!
One thing, mine didn’t come out crispy – how do I make that happen?? Did I maybe have too much sauce since I didn’t have a full 2lbs of brussel sprouts?
These are delicious! I only had sriracha for chili sauce so I used a little less of that and did the sprouts in the air fryer. I will be making these a lot. Thank you.
These are very tasty however I followed the recipe exactly but they did not crisp up? any suggestions? Broiler for a few minutes maybe???
What’s they spicy element in this dish?
A few of us here want to know how to get these crispy. A response would be most appreciated. :-) Thank you.
Are you guys roasting them on the top rack? If not — I would…you could also broil for the last 30-45 seconds to try and get them crispy.
Really an excellent sauce for brussel sprouts. I am not the hot and spicy flavor person, so I used 1/2 tspn. chili and garlic sauce, but wow! I added to already made b. sprouts, and it was phenomenal.
Dang this was so good! We made it for dinner and just threw some pancetta on the pan too for a little protein and man. Amazing. Thanks for sharing!

I love brussels sprouts anyway you want to feed them to me. This recipe is sooooo good! I was trying to find a copy cat recipe for the brussels served in the restaurant in my office building. I swear this is it but better! I have linked it to all my co-workers who love to order them so they can make them.
