Garlic Butter Naan. (aka, what you should make in your quarantine kitchen this weekend!)
You’re about to make the most delish garlic butter naan bread.
Hello heaven!!
Today I have an extra little bonus recipe here for you so you have a project in the kitchen this weekend. It’s a fun one too. And a delicious one!
Plus, it will go amazingly well with this chickpea curry.
I shared a naan bread a million years ago but this garlic butter version is TOPS. It is the ultimate comfort food.
And guess what? You don’t need any yeast!
In the craziest turn of events, I can’t find ANY yeast in my grocery stores right now. I mean, are people really baking that much bread? If so, that’s wonderful. But the bread aisles are practically empty too!
Maybe they are just making a lot of pizza.
Yes.
Let’s think that.
So anyway – this naan bread doesn’t use yeast – it uses baking powder and soda. I’ve made versions with both yeast and baking powder and I really love both. You’re still going to let this one rise for a while, so don’t get TOO excited. It only helps with the flavor.
You’re also going to use yogurt! I’ve used both plain regular yogurt and plain greek yogurt with success. If you don’t have plain yogurt right now, you can use all milk. But if you have the yogurt, go for it.
The dough rises, you form it into balls, roll it out and cook it on a cast iron skillet. It gets all charred and delicious!
But then comes the best part – the garlic butter.
OH YES.
Melt some butter in a saucepan and stir in minced garlic cloves. Brush it directly on the hot naan bread. Sprinkle on some fresh parsley and you are in business!
While I have always loved naan, Eddie is absolutely fanatical over it. Probably loves it more than I do! If I don’t make it, he buys a package every week (which isn’t anywhere near as good as homemade). We often use it for these smoky chicken pitas (instead of the pita!) and we make quick pizzas on naan too.
It’s just SO easy. Make it your project!
Garlic Butter Naan Bread
Garlic Butter Naan
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- ½ cups warm milk
- ½ cups plain yogurt
- 1 teaspoon honey
- canola or vegetable oil, for brushing
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- fresh chopped parsley, for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, soda and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, yogurt and honey. Add half of the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until the dough starts to come together. Add the remaining milk gradually, stirring and bringing the dough together with your hands.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover it. Let it sit in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours. It won't rise much! But let it rest.
- Once it rests, remove it from the bowl and knead it a few times on a floured surface, using some extra flour if it’s too sticky. Divide the dough into 8 separate balls. Roll each ball out into an oval shape.
- Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once it’s hot, brush it with a bit of canola (or another high heat) oil. Place the dough on the skillet and let it cook for 2 minutes or until it begins to bubble. Flip it and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more. Repeat with remaining dough.
- Heat the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it melts. Stir in the garlic and turn off the heat. Brush the naan with the garlic butter and sprinkle with fresh parsley.

It was perfect the first time. I learn so much from you as well! Keep it up great post.
This looks great and I am definitely going to make it! One question, for the milk could I use almond milk?
i have not tried with almond milk, but i do think it would work!
I used almond milk and it turned out great!
If I don’t have yogurt and need to use all milk would I use 1 cup of milk?
yes kat! use 1 cup of milk.
Wow I actually have all the ingredients for this at home! There’s really no yeast in this? It’s been sold out at the store for weeks!
no yeast!! i know, so crazy! i don’t understand!
This looks great! Store bought naan is on my normal shopping routine, but we can’t get it now, so this is welcomed (and probably much tastier) alternative! And thanks for including ideas for ingredient substitutions. I’ve come to adopt a ‘use what we have’ mentality under the current circumstances.
thanks so much cassie!
Can’t wait to try this! Best idea for storing?
i wrap mine in foil and stick in the fridge! reheat in a low oven for a few minutes until warm!
My husband, and really all my friends here in the UK, loves Indian food, but I can’t stand it. All I ever eat when we go to an Indian restaurant is the garlic naan. I love the texture. I can’t wait to try to make it myself.
I have half and half or coconut milk. I’d rather use the half and half, but do you think I should mix it with some water to lighten it up?
i think in this situation i would use 1/2 of the half and half then mix with 1/2 cup water!
Thanks! I held off on making the curry yesterday until this came out!
Thanks for sharing. Quick question, what should be the thickness of each oval dough before cooking
hi sara! i honestly don’t worry about the thickness and instead roll it out as thin as you possibly can! if you need a measurement i’d probably go with 1/4 inch or less :)
Ok, that naan bread looks amaze, but can we talk about the smoky chicken pitas?!, the chicken, the feta, everything comes together so well. That is definitely one of my all-time faves of yours. It never gets old, along with the sesame ginger salmon one.
so glad!! i love that old recipe too! :)
Hi Jessica, I have a glass top stove and have been warned (by my husband and my stove manual *eye roll*) not to use a cast iron skillet on the surface. Do you think I could make this using an electric griddle or by broiling in the oven?
I’d like to also know what alternatives to the cast iron there are…. because I don’t have one. OK to use a regular frying pan?
I have a glass-top stove as well and I used a crepe pan instead. I like the crepe pan as there are no edges so it makes flipping the bread easier ;)
I LOVE garlic naan!!! Do you think I can use Bobs Gluten Free 1 to 1 flour and 1 cup almond milk if I don’t have yogurt.
i think that you can!! please report back and let me know how it turns out :)

I have an electric stovetop and can’t use cast iron- would this still work on a regular skillet?
yes regular skillet will work! you might not have the charred bits but it will definitely work :)
Could I use sour cream for the yogurt? I have that on hand. Thank you!
yep!!
Hey Jessica. In the instructions it says In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, soda and soda.. Do you just mean baking soda?
oops! the second soda should be salt. i fixed it, thank you!

I made this last night with full fat greek yogurt and almond milk which worked just fine! It was super easy and delicious so I’ll definitely be making it again but I’ll add a bit more salt to the dough next time.
I made these and the chickpea curry last night. SO good. Definitely keeping these as a go-to meal. Thank you!!
These were delicious All I have left at home is cake flour, so that’s what I used and they turned out great! Thank you!
Just made this with King Arthur gluten free flour—amazinggggg
yay!
Oh. My. This was fabulous and so easy! I made these today to go with pot roast and the 18month old scarfed his down!
I managed to keep a couple hidden and will enjoy w/your French onion soup (which hub has proclaimed as marvelous)!
I made this today to go with matar paneer and it was SO GOOD. I probably didn’t need to make the full recipe but now I’ve got tons of naan! Worked great with a regular skillet instead of cast iron too, for anyone who wasn’t in the mood to deal with cast iron.
This looks delicious. I currently don’t have milk, but do have yogurt. Would you recommend using yogurt to replace the milk or perhaps 1/4 cup yogurt mixed with 1/4 water to create a 1/2 cup milk? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for the recipe! The naan was perfectly chewy and soft. I used the garlic butter to cook the naan, after trying the first one with Pam canola oil spray. I figured since the butter was going on there anyway……..The ones cooked in the butter had a slightly brighter sheen (more oily) , but had more flavor. This will be a new staple when I have time to make it!
Jessica, This is naan is totally amazing! Not only was it much easier then I imagined, it’s just so darn delicious! This will become a staple!
This was amazing! About as good as what we get at our favorite Indian restaurant – different style a bit. WOW. So easy to make too. I will definitely make these again. Off to check out those smoky chicken pitas. I’ve been exploring your recipes more since the quarantine started and we all are loving them!!!
YUM — thank you for this. Super easy to make and SO tasty.
Hi! Made a 1/2 batch of naan last night to serve with chicken shawarma—delish! But I’m very much a beginner bread baker and am wondering if the dough is supposed to be completely not sticky at the end. If I can’t roll it out because it’s so sticky, do I just keep adding flour? I ended up stretching the dough into ovalish shapes before cooking and it seemed to work fine. Thanks!
I have Vanilla Greek yogurt. Could that be used instead of plain? Otherwise, I can do all milk. Thank you!

Made it. And if anyone might ask I used plain almond milk and non-diary yogurt and it worked fine and was tasty.
awesome! thanks for sharing!
Believe it or not! I have yeast but no baking soda!! If I wanted to use yeast but follow a similar recipe any idea how i could do it!! This iooks amazing and is my husbands favorite XOXO
So easy and so delicious!
Very easy to make and delicious!
I had to add more flour as the dough was pretty sticky. I put the milk in the microwave along with the yogurt, so the milk mixture was probably warmer than it should have been. Also added a bit more salt. Thank you for the recipe! I deleted all my other naan recipes from Pinterest. I don’t need them anymore :D
Do you think I could substitute the milk and yogurt for 1 cup of Plain Kefir?
i do!!
Another amazing recipe from Jessica! I used almond milk and Greek yogurt because it was what I had. Also skipped the garlic butter and put a little garlic powder in the dough instead. The naan turned out perfectly!
I’m out of milk but really want to make this tonight with my chicken curry! Do you have any substitute suggestions? Additional yogurt mixed with water? Thank you!
yes! you can definitely use water and yogurt!
This dough needs more flour, it’s close to 100% hydration by weight with 1C wet to 2C dry. I added more flour until it’d at least come together into a sticky mound.

I have made this twice now with fantastic results. Thank you!
This was so good my husband said he’d like me to make it everyday!
I have Vanilla Greek yogurt. Could that be used instead of plain? Otherwise, I can do all milk. Thank you!
i would do all milk instead!
I have Greek yogurt with honey in fridge. Don’t you think I could do the amount listed and not worry with the honey? Will Greek cook up different than regular?
Amazing recipe! Quick, easy and delicious. Highly recommend
