Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi.
Most days the thought of bearing my own offspring scares me to death.
I can barely tie my own shoes.
I lay on the couch most Saturday mornings until 11 am. Or later.
Sometimes I yawn in church. And chew gum.
I watch Sopranos marathons for four hours straight and then spend another two asking my husband if Tony is real because I know, I just know that he has to be real. He has to be.
I watch mindless trash like Jersey Shore too.
Not apologizing for that one Dad… I know you watch it too.
I don’t water my flowers.
I don’t clean the refrigerator.
Laundry is merely a blip on the radar.
And just yesterday, I went to spray a baking sheet with Pam and grabbed Raid instead. Raid, as in the poisonous ant killer. Raid, as in the life-ending serum that you drown insects in. Yes, I almost served Mr. How Sweet chicken tenders spritzed with Raid. How delicious!
Sometimes I have ice cream for dinner. And I nap. Oh boy… do I nap. Can I still nap with a kid? Like, really nap. Not a little 15-minute shut eye that makes you wish you’d simply stayed away and done something productive.
I stay in my pajamas some days until 8 o’clock at night. Hot, sexy sweatpants… XXXL sweatpants from college. Mr. How Sweet is lucky, right? Oh well, you can’t have it all…
But what I’m really worried about?
What I fret about all day? What keeps me up at night?
I might need to eat vegetables. Really people.
Honestly, do I have to? I don’t think I’ll ever love anything enough to eat a broccoli stalk.
And that whole balanced meal business? Snooze.
No more caramel and bacon for dinner I suppose.
Woe is me.
When that time comes, and I’m sure it will as I will rightfully deserve to have a smart-mouthed little brat screaming at me in the dressing room of Limited Too (memories!), I think I’m only going to make myself dinners like this.
Boil water. Dump in pasta. Saute onions. Add mushrooms. Add wine. [Lots of it.] Add cream.
Voila. Dinner is done in 15 minutes.
Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi
1 pound whole wheat gnocchi
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
2 cups mushrooms, chopped
1/3 cup white wine
1/2 cup heavy (or light) cream
1/4 cup freshly shaved parmesan cheese + more for topping
fresh parsley for garnish
salt and pepper
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Add onions with a sprinkle of salt and pepper and saute until soft, about 5-6 minutes. While onions are cooking, prepare pasta and boil according to directions. Once onions are translucent, add garlic then add mushrooms. Cook until mushrooms are soft – about 5 more minutes.
Add wine and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in cream. Turn off heat and stir in parmesan. Add cooked gnocchi to cream sauce. Serve with chopped parsley and more parmesan.
Oops! I forgot a step: drink the wine. Lots of it.

Mmmmmm… I loove gnocchi. They’re fluffy pillows of yummy carbs.
Soooo making this. It looks divine!
I think of those things too, like how can I possibly lay on the couch all night with no one bothering me if I have a kid? I’m sure we’ll figure it out eventually. Any idea for a quick dinner is good to me, especially if it has pasta and wine!
This is so creative! Gnocchi is a favorite of mine, and I know I would love this. Awesome.
Mmmm how could anything with mushrooms, cream, cheese and wine be wrong? Hang on, let me wipe the bit of drool off my lips.
As for kids, I want them for sure. I just hope they’re not picky eaters ;)
Gorgeous pictures! I love how you were able to make the gnocchi look pretty (not an easy feat).
I was hoping you were going to tell me you’re pregnant.
I was wondering the SAME THING!
But this recipe will do;) I’ve been wanting to try making gnocchi for awhile now, maybe I will try it with your sauce.
PS. Totally made the s&v potato chip fish last night, my husband went berserk!
Sorry friends! ;)
I have kids and I hope if you have them you avoid this nightmare-“These 5 homemade mac and cheese recipes are okay but I still like the yellow horror from the Kraft Box better.”
This looks great and I’ll enjoy it while the kids have yet another night of pasta and (jar) sauce. Sigh
hahaha Your post made me giggle. :D
That gnocchi look delicious!!
Oh my… I think we may have been twins in a past life. I chew gum AND yawn – lots – in church. I don’t clean my fridge, and rarely water my flowers – hence most of the ones in my house are fake. AND I love mushrooms. This looks amazing!
You are a hoot! Are you trying to tell us something, Jessica? ;-)
You make wholewheat look so appealing – that’s amazing because it is brown.
Mind you, chocolate is brown…..
Hysterical post! I do have kids; the good news is you can still wear the sweats all day, and my mom (and sisters) always told me “nap when they nap.” Good advice! And don’t worry about the veggie thing. I think my youngest went for months eating only peanut butters sandwiches, carrots, and apples. While they change your life and your heart in a zillion ways, they’re soooo worth it! (And I can’t wait to try this recipe!)
Mindless tv is perfectly ok. I just posted about my love of the Real Housewives.
Enjoy your weekend!! :)
have you ever tried roasting broccoli? it’s sooo good. barefoot contessa has a recipe for roasted broccoli with lemon, parmesan, pinenuts and basil. maybe start there?
I have! I can eat a bite or two but them I’m just… blah.
Oh man, I haven’t had breakfast yet, and this looks so delicious! I love quick dinners and anything including gnocchi and mushrooms has got to be a winner!
haha I hear ya sister! If having a child means that I can’t be so selfish then I will hold off as long as possible. Jersey Shore and wine goes together like peanut butter and jelly. Babies can wait ;)
I can nap with the best of em! Love me a good afternoon snooze…zzzzzz.
Hooray for veggies- lovin this gnocchi!
Yum! I actually had a sweet potato gnocchi with mushrooms at a restaurant this week and fell in love! Great idea
Wow, I haven’t had gnocchi in forever…it looks so damn good! And Tony Soprano IS real. Realer than Snooki’s tan! But that’s not saying much…
HA! that sounds like me but i have 5 kids! LOL. ALOT of people asked my hubby and I how we were going to have kids of our own when we act like kids most of the time anyways! Well it DOES work! I’m grateful for Saturday morning cartoons and me lounging in my bed with coffee until they come screaming for food (usually around 11am or so). I’m a lazy weekend person!
The gnocchi look delish! Have you ever made homemade? How does the consistency of this compair to the lightness of homemade? My Nonna used to make gnocchi weekly for me (cuz i was spoiled) and SO miss it!
I have made a few homemade ones: http://www.howsweeteats.com/recipes/pasta/ – they are incredible and I agree that homemade gnocchi tastes SO much better. But making pasta just isn’t my thing.. I don’t know why I don’t enjoy it… maybe because I don’t *love* pasta or I’m not Italian? But nothing can compare to homemade! I love the whole wheat boxed version because it cooks in minutes.
omg sometimes I have dreams that I have a baby and I forget to like, you know feed it and I don’t have diapers. And then I wake up in a cold sweat and realize I don’t have a baby but if I did those things would actually probably happen.
God help us all.
I have quite similar dreams.
might be due to the “just-got-married-now-where-are-the-babies-you’re-28-for-gods-sake!” mentality our families have… his mother is even worse than mine!! I say more dogs.
I’ve never attempted gnocci, I just may need to try now though because these look delish!
hahaha :) You always crack me up. I sometimes worry about having to have real meals every night…I mean sometimes you just don’t feel like real, right? I’m just hoping she digs breakfast for dinner as much as I do. Looks like a great recipe. I need to home make some gnocchi again. I took a cooking class thinking I’d come out a gnocchi expert and I still have troubles. Maybe I should just stick with the packaged kind…ok random train of thought over. I hope you guys are having a great (raid free) weekend
You CAN absolutely do all of those things and still have children, minus the raid spray.
I have two kids and still manage to make extravagant dinners very often.
I still nap, sleep late sometimes, wear sweatpants, watch trashy tv, it’s just how you go about it.
Having kids is the best and hardest thing ever.
We love gnocchi in this house, but I don’t think I’ve ever made a batch that looked this decadent. I included you in my “Blogs I Love” post this morning. You really are one of the best!
Thank you so, so much!
Do you always post on Saturdays? I’m not complaining… it just means another day of the week for a great recipe! :)
Sometimes! It just depends. I prefer to go with the element of surprise. ;)
Yea. That sounds about right. ;)
I feel EXACTLY the same way about babies. They’re cute, but… And my husband is 7 years older than I am which means it’s his biological clock is ticking now. Right now we’re faced with the fact that I have things I want to do but he’s ready for babies yesterday. Scary!
Mine is 10 years older than me! Eeek!
You can do most of those things with kids….and you can serve them Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi instead of boxed macaroni and cheese! Jamie Oliver will be proud of you! ;)
Good point! :)
Best post ever!!! Omg after watching my nephew last night (he’s teething), I was so happy to hand him back. I love him to death but I told my husband on the car ride home how happy I was to go home, change into my sweats and lay on the couch watching housewives. I love my life! =)
Love this! and seriously, that gnocchi looks absolutely amazing….and I’ll admit, I have way too much laundry piled up in my bathroon…and stay in my my pj’s way throughout the day, too. I mean…conserving clothes…like I said, I already have too much laundry to do.
Hahaha, damn. Your gnocchi came out WAY better than mine. I might have to re-make your version for a little pill-bug redemption. :)
loving your confessionals :)
gnocci is one of my favorite dishes of all time and I cna’t wait to try this :) that is when I stop being such a lazy foodie blogger cook! :P
Girl, I’m guilty of most of those things too!!
I love gnocchi!! This looks absolutely amazing. ;)
I’m sick, but I’m salivating over your Peanut Butter Stuffed Hot Fudge Cupcakes. I might be making those this weekend. ;)
I still take naps. Real naps. But of course it’s not at my leisure–it’s got to be when my daughter is napping. That is when I should be cleaning the house or doing other responsible things, but sometimes, I just love a good nap!!
I was hoping to hear about a pregnancy too! I think you will have super cuter babies and will come up with the most creative recipes for your blog! I am trying for a baby now, and am obsessed with little ones. PS My sister’s little one is 5 and loves to help with cleaning.
Good luck to you! :)
This looks amazing! I’ve never cooked gnocchi myself before, but I had lobster and squash gnocchi at a restaurant last night. Deeelish. Thanks for sharing the recipe – this is being filed under things to make when the boyfriend isn’t around, since he thinks all mushrooms are poisonous.
Lobster and squash?? Mmmmmm!
This looks awesome!
this looks amazing! love gnocchi and its texture mmmmmmm. haha I always think they look funny though! like lil maggots or somethin’? :P
I was just at TJ’s and *almost* picked up a package of WW gnocchi… DARN IT! Now I have to go back! wine+cream sauce > screaming kiddos ;P
I’m already crazy about gnocchi, but the creamy mushroomy deliciousness is making me even more in love with it!!
I was just wondering last week if I would ever be able to take long-get-back-into-bed-and-sleep-the-afternoon-away naps once Baby Cakes arrives. Either way – I know I’m going to be hitting up this recipe when I don’t feel like slaving away in the kitchen.
I just made gnocchi last week and shoved it in the freezer for when we need a quick meal…I might just have to top it with this!
And I love the reference to the Limited Too…how could I have possibly forgotten about that store?
Best store ever.
I have been eying Gnocchi at Trader Joes for a while now… Maybe I will actually pick it up off the shelf and buy it?
I’ve never seen it there!
I recently made some homemade gnocchi (for the first time!) and still have a ton in my freezer. I’ve been racking my brain for new recipes so this is perfect, thank you!
I want this so bad! Please come cook it for me!!
I’d cook you anything if it meant we got to hang out!!
I still drink lots of wine, laugh at fart jokes, love Jersey Shore and regularly forget to clean. I’m a parent, you’ll be OK!
Oooh yummy! I see your fascination with mushrooms is still going strong!!
Oh boy…I watch Jersey Shore and teen mom while my oldest child (6) is sleeping or at school and the younger one (1 and half) does not realize how trashy it is so she plays next to me while I vicariously live thru Snookie :)
I try to show a good example in front of them as far as eating goes…I do however keep jelly beans in my glove compartment, sneak bites of cake out of the fridge while they are in tub, and sometimes my husband and I order wings at 11pm.
I put jeans on to take my son to the bus and change into yoga pants when I get back in the house.
As long as everything looks good on the outside, I’m happy.
I think I love you.
ha! Epic comment.
