I Sorta Did a Little Craft.
But not really.
We all know how I feel about that.
I just wiiiish I was crafty, sort of like how I wish I liked to drink coffee and how I wish I liked to read classics.
After my giant holiday pinterest binge, I really was wishing I was crafty. Even the easiest stuff turns disastrous for me: 1. because I have zero patience and 2. because I just do NOT have an eye for decorating. I’m a mess.
But I attempted this last night… just threw some matte purple and mint green ornaments in a big glass… thing?… and then added some tiny champagne and gold ones in there too.
I have no idea where to put it. Or what else to put with it. Or why it doesn’t look as pretty as it would if I paid someone $500 to do it. Or if I even like it. Or why I don’t have a trillion dollars to have someone decorate my house four (or really… six) times a year.
Life’s not fair.

Pinterest always makes me feel inadequate and inspired at the same time. Crafting is about taking chances and trying new things, though. Good for you–I think it’s really cute!
Haha. Isn’t that the truth! I was just thinking the same about feeling inadequate from pinterest. All the beautiful things and so little time (or maybe its too big a wish-to-do list) in wanting to create such beauty. Then I get overwhelmed and do none….
Well, I take that back. I did see a cool pantry with ball jars. And I went out, bought them, and cleaned up my pantry a bit. Still more work to be done. But so far its the beginning of cool and functional.
Centerpiece!
I love decorating. I’ll come do your house.
Umm i keep seeing Pins that you need to see – wish there was a better way to share them… here is another one for you!
http://pinterest.com/pin/284149057709025831/
PS _ i agree.. i think I am crafty until I plug in the hot glue gun – before I know it I am out 5 sticks of glue and have burnt finger tips!
I think you can share pins with someone just like you add a name to Facebook by typing
@How Sweet Treats. Now, my computer literacy skills are minimal, so it might not work.
You are right, just @ people under the pin you want to share with them and they will get a notice.
Thanks for that tip, Stephanie! I learned something new about Pinterest (of which I know little, other than I could pin away an evening… ) today!
I am the opposite of crafty or creative. I’m scared to decorate our new house and have it look rediculous. I’m on the less is more bandwagon.
haha i don’t think you give yourself enough credit! i think it looks great! you could put it on a fireplace mantle… or a table at your entranceway with some hurricanes on both sides. :)
It’s so cute though! Even the simplest DIY stuff can add so much – and I love purple and green together! Also, I can’t believe you don’t drink coffee hahaha
I love the colors. Turn all the bulbs so the hanger part is on the inside and can’t be seen.
This is so cute! I wish I was more crafty, pinterest always inspires me but then I remember I am not crafty!
You could put some extra ornaments scattered around the base of your container. Or put it on a bookshelf next to a stack of books!
tear.
i am so proud of you.
I did something like this last year, and I put it up on the mantel with some garland around it and strung some lights down in between the sparkly balls so it was pretty and shimmery.
+1 point for getting to say “sparkly balls” on a Monday.
I love it. It screams centerpiece at a holiday table :)
I know how you feel, pinterest really displays how talented people are and all the things I cannot do!
love your craft though :-)
I did the same thing last year but mixed them with gold pinecones that I bought from Michaels. It made it look a little less homogenous, and really freakin’ festive. I felt like Martha. It was a good day, till the gold glitter from the pinecones went EVERYWHERE. Worth it though. Keep up the craftin’!
Pinterest makes even crafty people feel that way. Seriously.
I agree with everyone else… use it as a centerpiece! Cute!
This made me laugh because this is the extent of my crafting as well–totally did this last year!
I had a similar attempt…. but mine was with pine cones. I bought all these great pine cones all different sizes trying to be all crafty and pinteresty I put them in a big glass thingy.
It is sitting awkwardly on my coffee table.
I will never have that pretty tablescape you see in the magazines or on Pinterest.
I’m so not creative and crafty so I relate to this post. p.s. I hate coffee too…it really puts a damper on the whole “coffee dates” with friends thing…. :)
Cute! I love any attempts at being crafty or creative. And I haven’t ever tasted coffee, but the smell kind of makes me sick… :)
I also saw that on Pinterest and think I will do it. I love the colors you went with! Very cute!
Aw I think it’s great! Centerpiece for sure, at least it’s unique!
Uh, that looks better than what I’d come up with… and by “what I’d come up with” I obviously mean something along the lines of the pumpkin scented candle I stuck in my living room next to a teeny pumpkin and called a fall decoration.
pretty sure your creativity in the kitchen and on this blog far make up for your lack of decorative skills, although I still think it looks festive!
Don’t feel bad my sister does crafty and I break out in hives if I look at a glue gun!! Talk about getting the shaft in the gene pool.
Pinterest turns me in to the biggest crafty-wanna-be, too. So far I’ve only made things for babies – and babies could care less what they look like. Win!
Pinterest is so much fun, but always leaves me questioning my “crafty” skills. Oh, well :D You win some, you lose some!!
I love that you got crafty. There are soooo many Pinterest projects I’d love to find the time to do.
Love the purple you chose, so pretty!
Haha! You cracked me up saying the things you wish but especially when you said you wish you liked to read the classics. I feel the same way!
looks festive and pretty! im proud of you(= U deserve a break out of the kitchen creating area.
Haha..I love Pinterest, but I have no patience for DIY things either!
We usually do something like this somewhere in our house, only, we take ribbob (the kind you’d use to wrap your packages with), curl it, and place it randomly in the bowl with the bulbs. It looks pretty. And you have to have SOME craftiness–you make all your food/dessert look so pretty. That’s gotta count for something right??
I really like that! I think you did a good job!
You made a….craft? Did it hurt? My eye is twitching.
No seriously, it’s very pretty!! I’m totally not crafty either, but trust me: you have plenty o’ talent: brains, beauty, sense of humor, and you can cook for days!!!!!!
So proud of you….our little girl is growing up…:-)
I love the purple and gold! You have a nice arrangement, with baubles less is better and the large ones more close to the bottom You could get some cedar boughs or some spruce and set a couple of sprigs behind the jar and set it near a plate of cookies cut out as xmas balls and decorated in your theme! I have made pine wreaths to set my jars in as well but thought it took away from the simplicity of the design. Michaels sells an even smaller xmas ball that you could incorporate for even more balance in your jar, but I must say your colours are fantastic!
Lol! Did you buy those bulbs at Target? I have the same ones! There so pretty in glass jars and silver bowls, that’s how I use them, funny they never make it to the tree.
Haha actually, I’ve had the purple and green ones for two years – they are from Michaels. But I got the mini gold shaded ones at Pat Catan’s this year!
I can relate to the crafty thing… there are a ton of wreaths on Pinterest that I want to make, but glue guns terify me.
I have a glass bowl-thing w/ornaments like this… I use it as a centerpiece on my kitchen table.
Very cute and successfull craftwork!
And very cute polkadot phone ;)
I’m an artist and I paint on silk and I can’t decorate my house to save my life. Your artistry and your decor is in the way you put ingredients together that make a mouth water by looking at them. That’s before you taste them. You ooze love on a website. That’s love and art. There is no art without love. Celebrate the artist that you are. The artist that we see. Place your craft creation prominently and exhale into the artist you are.
Maybe you could put a string of light in the bowl. Looks grand to me!
I can relate to all of those wishes. I am so not crafty that my mantle decorations have been the same for at least 5 years. I bring out the same Fall and Christmas decorations every year and look at last years pictures to even know how to arrange them. I would love to like coffee and classics but I’m really a Diet Coke and romance novels kind of girl. Although I have given up my diet coke addiction for 8 months now and I only have one for a special treat when I am out for lunch!
I can’t say I do much holiday decorating, so you get five stars for that one in my book. The downside of being crafty is that there are a lot more messes to clean up, so really you are doing yourself a big favor.
@Jessica – What colors are you doing on you tree? Maybe you should just stick to the same color scheme as your tree and you’d be happier with it. Or maybe just pick one color like either the green or purple and just do different shades and then add in the champagne colored ones with it. Just a suggestion :)
Oooooorrrrrrr if you want to keep the current color scheme you have there, then either buy a few that are a different shape in the same colors (like non-round ones) or add ones that either have glitter or beading on them in the same colors. Those would just add a little something extra to what you have. BTW what you did looks great as-is! :)
Great job. I love putting ornaments in a glass bowl. And then when get a little mood light going for the holidays… it comes all together. Nice job!
What is that pin I keep seeing about how inadequate Pinterest makes me feel…something like:
Pinterest: the clothes you’ll never afford, the recipes you’ll never make, and the house you’ll never have.
Something like that. I feel your pain. I have all these crafty, festive ideas for my house but 3/4 of them I’m not crafty enough to do and the other…well, I’m probably just too lazy.
But I can throw ornaments in a bowl. And your’s looks really pretty. I like that color combination. Maybe you’re craftier than you thought!
You can put this in the center of a table, maybe on a runner, or the center of an island, or an endtable. You get the picture :) and I’m guessing you already knew this :) You can do whatever you put your mind to, including crafting :) Have you heard of Tim Holtz? He oozes creativity. I don’t always like everything he does, but I always learn something new. Check out his blog. You just need ideas :)

I think it looks good :) I’ve seen so many pins like that. One of these days I will get a big glass bowl and attempt it as well.
By the way, love your iPhone cover. Polkadots are awesome :)
Pinterest is SO cool! I love the ideas they have, but I also know that I won’t do but maybe 1%…if that! …but I enjoy looking!
i also share you love, fear, and frustration for crafts lol. i have very high hopes when i get started on a project but i never can make it look like the picture. i like to tell myself that it doesn’t look like the picture because i can’t photo shop my craft or have special lighting. in fact the light over my kitchen table has 5 of those mini light bulbs and 4 of them are out and i just can’t remember to buy them at the store. then i feel better and my craft doesn’t feel so second best to the real crafters.
