Chocolate Avocado Pudding. Yep, It’s a Thing.
When life hands you avocados… make pudding?
Apparently so.
Though I have to admit that my first choice would be guacamole. However, sometimes life hands you avocados when you already have a large vat of guacamole in your fridge because life is so, so good. In that case, yes… make pudding. After you’ve OD-ed on your fair share of avocado toast.
Obviously.
You may remember last year that I made chocolate avocado pudding and then proceeded to eat it like… every single day of my life. My go-to recipes came from a mesh of Lisa and Jessica’s, then sort of warped into this version that I perfected to my taste buds and have been making ever since. Yeah. Melted chocolate is where it’s at. Very true story: I ate this practically every afternoon for a little snack before yoga for maybe two months? Three months? It’s full of antioxidants! It was the best thing ever. It was also the hugest thing ever, because I get bored super easily. Especially with my food. I haven’t even eaten dinner tonight yet and I’m already bored with it.
Not even joking.
The other thing is that I really always want to eat this for dessert but I have an intense, passionate abhorrence for cleaning my food processor. I loathe it more than I loathe cleaning normal things which is a lot. Especially when the sun goes down and I’m exhausted and watching new-but-terrible-but-still-worth-it 90210 or something. The sun going down is pretty much my gauge for productivity so yeah… daylight savings time can happen right now please.
Anyway, that’s how I satisfying my obsession. Chocolate avocado pudding for an afternoon snack. I think I’m bringing it back.
If you’re an avocado hater, well… I’m not going to tell you that you can’t taste the avocado at all. I mean, sometimes you can’t whatsoever. I believe that it depends on your crazy mental state and the ripeness of your fruit, which will differ each time but can be somewhat managed with sweetener and cocoa or chocolate. I use honey because I can’t get on the agave train and overall, I just find honey to be a bit more versatile for my everyday kitchen. I put it on Greek yogurt and mix it with peanut butter and I’d put it in tea if I drank it, which I never will because that stuff tastes like dirty water. Oh yes it does.
Ack.
If you’re an avocado lover, then you’ll probably adore this pudding, will rarely be able to taste the avocado and will soon become addicted to this little treat that is totally worth dragging out your food processor and cleaning that giant hunk of junk. Ugh. So annoying. Can’t someone create a self-cleaning processor? I think it would make millions.
I think the moral of the story is that everything (especially Monday) is better with chocolate.
Chocolate Avocado Pudding
Ingredients
- 4 ripe avocados
- 1/4 cup light coconut milk
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 ounces of dark chocolate, 72% or higher, melted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
for topping
- whipped cream, coconut whipped cream, sprinkles, cocoa nibs
Instructions
- Remove avocados from the skin (and pit) and place in a food processor. Blend until combined and creamy. Add in all remaining ingredients, blending until pureed, scraping down the sides when needed to combine. Taste and season/sweetened additionally if desired. Blend for a good 1-2 minutes until completely creamy, then serve with desired toppings.
- Note: I have kept this in the fridge for about 24 hours successfully, just make sure to immediately place it in a seal tight container. If you would like a smaller serving, I’d suggest cutting the recipe in half.

Just made some avocado chocolate pudding for the first time in months last week. It’s seriously so good, but I feel the same way as you about cleaning my food processor so I rarely make it. Your version looks lovely!
I’ve always wanted to try chocolate avocado pudding! Your pictures are so beautiful I think I’m finally going to do it!

So delicious! Made this yesterday and added some coconut sugar to make it a bit sweeter. Ate the entire thing with my mom (so good with bananas, & to spread between cookies). Love! Will definitely whip up another batch! Thank you for sharing.

This is wonderful. It took a bit of work because I only own a blender. I’m going out to buy a food processor today.
Can you use almond milk instead of coconit milk? Looks divine !
Yes, just love this pudding. I have made this several times now and it just gets better each time I make it. Thanks!
this tasted very bad. i’m very disappointed. the ratio of ingredients was just awful
Esther, are you related to Grumpy Cat by any chance? lol!
How did I not know of this? Thank you for drawing it to my attention.
BTW, I hate using my food processor too (not because of cleaning it, but because it is wedged at the back of a cabinet and I do not have the emotional wherewithal to dig it out), so I did this the lazy way and just smashed the avocado with a spoon in a coffee mug, then added the rest of the stuff and stirred until it had no green spots left. TOTALLY worked.

This was absolutely terrible. What a waste of 4 good avocados and 3 oz of good chocolate (had to bump it up by 1oz because it was a bitter mess after 2oz). It was astringent and lacked any sweetness. After trying to revive it with more honey, sugar, almond milk, and just about every other delicious thing in the kitchen we scrapped the entire batch. Boo this recipe!
Regina and Esther,
How disappointing for you that this recipe didn’t work out. I have been making this type of dessert on occasion for at least a year now. I have found that I have to add quite a lot of sweetener (cups, not tablespoons) to make it taste good and I always try to use more than one kind. Today, for example, I used Maple Syrup and Lyle’s Golden Syrup, as well as maple sugar and coconut sugar dissolved in water (though I’ve also just used Maple Syrup and it turns out great.) Ordinarily, I don’t add milk, though I have added water, and today I used Hemp Milk just to see how it worked out—not bad! I increase the amount of cocoa, vanilla, and salt to taste until it is absolutely scrumptious! It’s also best, once you’re satisfied with the flavor, to refrigerate it for several hours or overnight (it becomes thick like a mousse.)
If you would give it another try, using the recipe given here on Yummly as a starting point, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed a second time. And, to make sure you don’t waste more expensive ingredients, try making the pudding with the ingredients and amounts listed, but with just 1 avocado—aside from the coconut milk and honey, that’s how I make mine. And, in my experience, Haas avocados have the best flavor and texture, so try using one of those in your next experiment. Best of luck to you!
I just have to say I’ve been trying avocado pudding for years and this is by far the best recipe I’ve ever tried! My 4 year old loves it too. We made it almost everyday last week!!!
I was weary about making this recipe based on a couple of negative reviews, but I had some aging avocados that needed to be used and this sounded too good not to try. I’m so glad I did because it is absolutely delicious! I tested it before adding the dark chocolate and was a little worried but once the melted chocolate went in, everything came together and was delicious. I was researching other recipes and almost went with one that didn’t add in the dark chocolate but now realize that it offsets the need for more sugar which works perfectly for me. Although I do feel you really need to be a lover of dark chocolate to truly appreciate this. It is VERY rich. I will say, I did enjoy the pudding better right after it was made. it tasted lighter, the avocado was undetectable and it had more of a pudding texture. After sitting over night in the fridge it became a very dense rich mousse, slightly more bitter with a more pronounced avocado taste. Still love it though.
I love avocados and had heard of avocado pudding, but couldn’t bring myself to try it until I read your post…. and it’s amazing! I’ve already made it twice. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Came across this version of avo pudding and loving the melted chocolate and coconut milk slant… Will try this soon. Spring is avo pudding season, don’t you know!? Thanks for the inspiration!
So I just wanted to say thanks for this great recipe. I just got done making another batch. This is the first time I have taken the time to read some other comments. I wanted to make a point that this is a moose that is flavored with a very high amount of DARK chocolate. So if your not into that you may want to adjust your chocolate, this will not taste like snack pudding. If you think of it as a different desert you are going to enjoy it more. Also, if you hate cleaning your blender or food processor squirt in dish soap add warm or hot water about half or more, ( just enough so it doesn’t flow over), then put it back on your motor and blend away…rinse with hot water and Ta Da all clean. Thanks to Pinterest for that tip. My husband now asks if he can help me clean up when I use my blender. :-)

I’m sorry, but this the nastiest pudding I have ever had and I like avocado desserts. I even saw in the comments where you admitted to having to add cups of sweetener, yet your
post makes it seem the recipe as is, is divine. ….
where in the comments did i “admitted to having to add cups of sweetener?????” – i absolutely did not, and i make this recipe as written in my post. we love it!
Someone named Amy left the comment about adding cups of sweetener. I can see how her post could seem to have come from the author.
