September Favorites: Beauty.
Best time of the month!! And maybe the best time of the year for makeup?? Ooooh how I love fall makeup.
I adore berry shades from eyes to lips and also go a little nutty over all the glitter that is coming out for the holidays… obviously. Of course. This past month I haven’t had much time to experiment with makeup or try new things – and the stuff I have used is what’s been going on my face daily since I’ve been traveling.
Probably my favorite product of last month has been the hourglass ambient lighting powder in incandescent light. I don’t think a day went by this month where I didn’t use it – it just gives the best, most natural glow. I’m still using everything else I talked about last month and still using most other things due to pregnancy. So now… on to this month’s faves.
First! Let’s talk about how I’m still so in love with the andalou naturals products. Last month I talked about the vitamic C cream and since, I picked up the night repair cream – which I’m obviously using at night – and the daily defense lotion because I wanted an option with SPF.
I LOVE THIS STUFF.
The night repair cream is insanely thick and luxurious which I adore because I have dry skin. And even though the daytime cream is labeled as a lotion, it is still SO thick and moisturizing. I wish the SPF was a bit higher, but I do use the Tarte tinted moisturizer most days on top and that has a higher SPF. I really want to try more of these products!!
This month has been all about eye shadow. Well, all about makeup in general because I’ve been wearing SO much. I’ve almost been wearing a full face of makeup every day because of book events where as most weeks in real life, I only apply lots of makeup two, maybe three, days per week. My go-to palette has been the it cosmetics naturally pretty palette – and what’s so huge for me is that while traveling, it’s the ONLY eye shadow I have brought with me besides the two singles below. This is big because I am someone who really likes to have a ton of options on hand at all time.
I went with this palette because I found that it had a great range of shades – enough neutrals but still enough color – with them being mostly matte but a pearly shimmer to transform them. It’s been perfect. And as you can see, I’ve stuck mostly with the top six shades.
The two singles I brought were the maybelline infallible shadows in amber rush and iced latte. I’ve talked about both before and have used them for ages, but I freaking love them. They stay on forever, they are so super shimmery, and I can wear each of them alone, together or in combo with the palette above.
Another fave that I’ve rambled on about before is the MAC prep and prime in radiant rose. I love using this and the maybelline age rewind, especially as the weather gets cooler and my skin gets drier – because it just brightens under my eyes SO much. If I’m barely wearing any makeup I will wear this alone – if I’m going out or to an event then I layer it with the age rewind. It’s great for dry skin.
OMG. I know I know. Could I talk about this anymore? I’m on my second tarte exposed blush and in blush years, that’s like huge because it takes me forever to get through one. I just can’t get over how much I adore this color. It’s the perfect skintone blush and I really love it in the fall because I can wear bright or dark lips without clashing. At least in my eyes… ha.
And speaking of lips! I’ve probably worn more lipstick in the last month than I have in my life. Last month I told you about the urban decay native lipstick and it’s still been my number one choice. It’s so moisturizing and I don’t even need a mirror to apply it. In the last week, I broke out my fall colors and the above is MAC rebel. Definitely an autumn staple for me. I like how it leans toward being a berry color when applied, but with a darker liner (I use MAC’s nightmoth) it can come off more of a dark purple.
Oh nails!! Fall nail polish is killing me. I have been very conscious of what I’ve put on my nails during pregnancy, using only Zoya shades for the last six months because they are pregnancy safe. I did cave this week and throw on a coat of essie’s for the twill of it (over Zoya basecoat!) which is the best fall shade ever. Love how it changes colors in the light.
This perfume is an oldie but a goodie and an annoying mention since it was limited edition, but it smells like cookies and I love it for fall. This is basically a rave on how much I adore jo malone perfumes – especially the smaller bottles because they fit so well in a purse or are easy to travel with. I want to deck out my entire house in jo malone gear but can’t take the plunge on $50 hand soap and $90 candles. That’s just insane.
Earlier this month I went to ulta to grab a travel sized batiste dry shampoo and they were out – but I saw this XXL plumping powder. Uh, holy crap. This stuff gives you TONS of body!! You only use the teeniest bit on your roots and I find it can be quite sticky, but if you just sprinkle the littlest bit and rub it into your roots – it boosts like crazy. Freaking love it. I only use dry shampoo for the texture but it can cause a lot of buildup, so I like having this option too.
Annnd that is that. What products are you loving this month? I did get the naked basics 2 palette but haven’t had a ton of time to play with it. From what I’ve used though, I love it as much as the first, maybe more. Now tell me what you adore! Be a bad example.
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are a few amazon affiliate links above. thank you for being here!}

I need to look for that prep+prime. thanks!!
You need to get the Vice 3 palette!!!! It’s a really nice mix of mattes, satins, and shimmers…also of neutral and bright colors! The brighter colors are pretty enough to use all over the lid OR just as a pop of color on the outer 3rd or center of the eye. LOVE.
I adore those L’oreal Infallibles. Oh my, they are amazing. I love Iced Latte in my inner corner. I think I am going to have to pick up MAC’s Rebel…it’s time!
Can’t wait to meet you at your book signing in Seattle next week!
I am eager to try the batiste plumping powder! I love volume!! Thanks for the review. :)
Love the look of that palette! Great mix of colours.
Ooo I’ve been looking for a new night cream since winter is around the corner and I have ridiculously dry skin – will be heading to Whole Foods for the night repair cream – thanks!!! :)
I so love the It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty eye shadow. Love.
YAY! Love these posts. I like that palette a lot too, even though I consider myself a shimmer-only eyeshadow person! I need to try that Andalou stuff!
This month I loved a Kat Von D blush called Essex – very natural like Exposed but a little more rosey. And several Makeup Geek blushes – best of which is Secret Admirer. It’s an orchid shade, almost purple! But totally works! L’Oreal Silkissime eyeliner in Gold, and a Pixi balm in Honey Nectar knocked my socks off unexpectedly. It’s quite incredible and I never saw it coming.
My favorite product this month was the Byway scent by Capsule Perfumes. I got it in a Popsugar box and didn’t think I’d like it but it has become my favorite perfume scent EVER. It’s super sweet with the slightest hint of floral to cut it, but in my mind it’s perfection!
Eek, I’m such a makeup fan, so I love seeing all your faves, definitely going to take the hubby’s credit card on a little shopping spree lol, better yet, I’ll bring him and then he’ll buy me what I need so we won’t be in the store too long lol!
All nail polishes that you can buy today are perfectly pregnancy safe. To experience any ill effects you’d have to drink probably ten bottles, and even then it would probably only require a stomach pump! It’s all marketing bs.
I just got the Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette and I am in looooove.
Also, Zoya’s Ki is a similar color to that Essie one!
My recent fav is Vu Radiant Eyes. It’s an eye cream by a local Pittsburgh dermatologist and I’m OBSESSED. You can find it at Market District! I have really dry skin and this is the only eye cream that moisturizes at the level I need.
You should post some pics/a video on how you apply your makeup :)
Layering SPFs doesn’t equal the total pf the two, it equals the average. So by layering, you’re actually getting less protection than either one alone.
Another AWESOME option for a volumizing powder is the Got2B Powderful. it’s about $4 and a bottle will last a lifetime. I can’t live without the stuff.
Also, I just bought a Revlon Matte Balm Stick thingy in an intense purple color and I desperately need the weather to cool down in Chicago so I can justify wearing it. Fall makeup is the best makeup.
I am loving Jo Malone’s new scent Wood Sage & Sea Salt! So awesome for fall…and you can mix it with some of their other scents!!! Love love love!
The Plumping Powder, the eyeshadows, the lips…I am ON BOARD!!!! GREAT recommendations! I’m making a list for Sephora right now!
So, I recently ordered Pureology shampoo, conditioner and hair cream for before drying and I am extremely happy with them…having a little highlight breakage (pool and sun didn’t help that either!!) I have needed something as a good treatment in place of my usual volumizing shampoo; I have medium hair, medium length, medium texture, but anything that is for colored hair usually weighs my hair down and makes it look ICKy….Not the Pureology!! It makes my hair smooth yet full, shiny and takes care of the little flyways I’m trying to heal :) I highly recommend it!!
Not being a gloss girl, I have found one I love from Neutrogena: it’s a beautiful berry red that doesn’t make me look like “walking lips” when I have it on!! Full color, but sheer…not too sticky…love it!
Thanks for sharing your fav’s!!
I can’t get enough of this seasons fall colours!! I already began donning berry nail polish and darker lipsticks
I just grabbed MAC Rebel and Cream In Ur Coffee for my Fall lipsticks. My new fav lip liner is MAC Pro Longwear pencil in Nice N Spicy. I convinced two different friends that they must get it and they are really happy with the pencil. It really does stick around for a while. I got Tarte blush in Blushing Bride for a warmer Fall cheek, although good point you made about a light blush color. I may need to grab your fav. I am obsessed with Essie’s new Fall line. The colors are so rich and different. LOVING Too Faced products right now, especially Better Than $ex mascara. Maybelline products have been very good to me lately. I freaking love their Define-A-Brow pencil that I had to pick up a few more to hoard away. It is similar to Anastasia’s pencil, only it is about $6. I also got a Fall lipstick shade from Maybelline called Pink Me Up. It is really pretty!
Okay, if you love the Hourglass ambient lighting powder, you’re going to love their ambient lighting blushes… and best of all, for holiday, Sephora has a palette with three. Just got mine in the mail last week, and I’m in love. Check it out: http://www.sephora.com/ambient-lighting-blush-palette-P388298?skuId=1643485. I got mine as a VIB Rouge, I think it’s on wait list right now, their Coming Soon graphic is listed. But you have to have… love, love love mine!
What sort of eye make up remover do you use? I’ve never been able to find one that works really well or doesn’t feel like I have to scrub my eyes off…I’d love to hear what you’ve liked!
Wait, I’m not supposed to use my Miracle Gel and Essie nail polishes? I hadn’t heard that nail polish wasn’t pregnancy-safe, unless maybe you are sniffing it out of the bottle or something. Will have to look into this!
I love the infallible shadows SO much! Wonderful product. And I just recently purchased the Batiste dry shampoo in travel size to see how I liked it… and, I love it! I bet I will also love that volumizing powder!

Hi Jessica – I look forward to your beauty posts every month – it’s always nice to know I’m not the only beauty fanatic out there :) And now I’m excited to pick up some of the plumping powder!
Lately I’ve been trying out more natural brands and also more indie brands – I’m really loving Red Apple Lipsticks, Brija, Darling Girl and Fyrinnae. Just lots of fun to play around with and now that it’s getting cooler (sort of!) I can go back to my too-much-eyeliner look and it’s not so weird! Also – have you ever tried Burt’s Bees lip shimmer (I love it in rhubarb) or the tinted lip balm (I really like Sweet Violet)? They are both so pretty and I like having a couple to keep in the car and in my bag.
Congrats on the baby – being a mom is great!
We have many of the same favorites! I have heard so many good things about that Urban Decay lipstick, I think I need to finally give in and try it out!
