Bye Bye, Twenty Ten.

December 31, 2010 · 37 comments

I must admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of 2010. At least, that’s what I thought a few hours ago. Then I started thinking about how blessed I am to have my family, my health, my family’s health, and overall goodness all around me.

So I changed my tune.

But I am still burning these bayberry candles. Have you heard? “A bayberry candle burned tip to socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket.”

I’m welcoming 2011 with open arms!

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is how I come up with my recipes. The truth? Time… brainstorming… money… tears… and many failures. Many failures. Emphasis on the MANY. I spend so much time developing recipes, and I can guarantee you that at least 25% of that time is dedicated to remaking the failed recipes.

I only wish that I had thought to take pictures of every single one.

Where to start?

I attempted to make 2 mini red velvet cakes for Valentine’s Day.

You see how well that turned out. Something about vinegar and baking soda and too much wine.

Luckily the second attempt didn’t flop.

These “healthy” chocolate scones were some of the dryest, most disgusting baked goods I’ve ever tried.

I nixed the “healthy” part and finally got it right.

I absentmindedly grabbed cinnamon chips instead of chocolate chips when making chocolate chip cookies one morning.

Think it sounds good? It wasn’t. Trust me.

This one wasn’t my fault, I swear. After spending our life savings on the freshest lobster we could find in Pittsburgh, Mr. How Sweet cooked it this way.

He thought that sauteing the lobster meant “boiling it in a pot of water.” Thankfully it was still edible and delicious.

During my muffin binge, I attempted to stuff a muffin with a caramel square.

Do you know what happens? It sinks to the bottom. Then you spend the rest of your life trying to scrub muffin tins.

I deemed this grilled bacon-wrapped shrimp too unphotogenic.

But it was delicious and we enjoyed every bite.

This marble loaf cake sunk all the way down in the middle.

It was a beautiful sight. But not really.

Oh look! More muffins.

These muffins never even baked or solidified into muffins once in the oven. I’m blaming my oven. And that wine.

Before tweaking the hot cocoa cookie recipe, these babies came out extremely underdone.

After nearly 20 minutes in the oven.

Clearly, I have an issue with loaf cakes.

Don’t forget to coat your chips in flour the first time around. This was really fun to clean!

Not.

I have more molasses, syrup, flour, butter, cocoa powder and bacon grease in the crevices of my kitchen counters, camera, and other unmentionable places than you can ever imagine.

Mr. How Sweet is not amused.

I know I sort of shared what happens to the baked mozzarella balls if you don’t spray the pan.

But what I failed to mention is that I forgot to spray the pan 3 times before remembering. I survived on burnt, bubbly mozzarella for 12 hours while peeling it off the only pan that Mr. How Sweet hasn’t destroyed.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. I always have a good laugh when people comment on my recipes or photos, because if you really saw the whole picture, we’d probably just share a good cry. Next time things don’t go your way in the kitchen, think of me and remember I’m probably sitting in a pile of dough and tears because my mixer decided to jump off the counter.

Here’s to a delicious 2011!

Many moons ago, I wrote a post about six things my mom was right about. It was actually one of my first posts ever.

Let’s be honest… mom’s are usually right about everything.

Especially this.

Not, not vegetables.

Bacon grease. Frying things in bacon grease… including vegetables. And potatoes. And eggs. And anything else you can get your grubby little hands on. If this offends you, I apologize.

But not really. Because it is the best thing ever.

Creamsicle Muffins.

In case you’re wondering, I’m still in a cinnamon roll coma. I decided it was time for something else for breakfast. Or snack time. Or if you’re anything like me, lunch and dinner. I have issues. Most normal people would eat broccoli or something. Or maybe eggs? No thanks. I’ll make some muffins. Who doesn’t love creamsicles? And muffins? And cream? And heavy cream? I do. I love anything and everything described “creamsicle.” Especially those Push-Ups I used to eat when I was on summer break. Those were the best. Remember them? Why did I ever stop eating them? The only thing to make a delicious “healthier” muffin taste better is to add a sugary, creamy glaze on top. Creamsicle muffins topped with creamsicle glaze? Don’t mind if I do. Whole Wheat Creamsicle Muffins makes 12 muffins 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour (or all-purpose) 1/3 cup sugar 1 egg 1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt 1/3 cup milk + 2 tablespoons 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 tablespoons orange zest contents of one vanilla bean raw course sugar for garnish Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place muffin cups [...]

Four Things.

I swiped this off Caitlin because well… I’ve been living in triple XL sweatpants for 4 days and reminiscing about having an old AOL email account where people would send me surveys every 13 seconds. The beginning of the downfall people. 1. Four TV shows that I watch: True Blood Boardwalk Empire Big Love Brothers and Sisters (I have an HBO addiction.) 2. Four things that I’m passionate about: writing food my family health 3. Four words/phrases I use a lot: Chocolate. Cheese. Exercise. Bacon. 4. Four things I’ve learned from the past: the grass isn’t always greener. you and only you have the power to control your own destiny. eating garbage makes you feel like garbage. when you want what you’ve never had, you must do what you’ve never done. (-ben franklin, my favorite quote) 5. Four places I would like to go: Rome Greece back in time to the Mad Men days Heaven 6. Four things I did yesterday: yoga wrote prayed shopped 7. Four things I am looking forward to: ringing in the new year and having an amazing 2011 spring and all that it entails having a giant family one day the day where I want to [...]

Shrimp and Bacon Risotto.

I think I have the 56th recipe you must add to your New Year’s Even menu. Why do we get so intimidated by risotto? There really is no need. I promise. It is simple. And this dish can be made in 30 minutes! Even Mr. How Sweet classifies this as a full meal since it has two types of meat. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he added a steak on the side. A few weeks ago, Victoria mentioned in the comments about making risotto with bacon drippings. It has been on my mind ever since. I love bringing out the Mother Lovett in me. Bacon grease makes it better. As crazy as it may sound, I think risotto is nearly foolproof. I simply add a little bit of liquid to cover the rice, let it simmer until the rice absorbs it, then add a little more liquid. I don’t even add hot liquid. I don’t even measure my liquid. I’m probably not doing it right. But it’s delicious. And easy. You must try it! And the dish really does have it all. Bacon. Wine. Seafood. What else do you need? Cheese? Now you’re just getting greedy. Shrimp and Bacon [...]

Holiday Date Night.

Mr. How Sweet and I went on a little date tonight… To the best place ever. This week has been so much fun and so eventful! We actually went out on a school week night for the second time in a week. We headed to Crate and Barrel to check out the sales and pick up a few things that Mr. How Sweet had got me singles of for Christmas. Like these fun turquoise votive and tealight holders. I also got these in red and purple. Loving the jewel tones! And we got some crazy gold charger plates with a few fun-colored plates. And a few more holiday dazzler plates to accompany the ones Mr. How Sweet gave me for Christmas. Plus some other randoms. Then we ended up at Capital Grille again… the second day in a row. Sometimes we don’t step foot in a restaurant for months. This marks the third time we’ve eaten out in a week. In fact, I haven’t cooked dinner once this week. This is what you end up with when you let Mr. How Sweet order: lobster mac and cheese, filet sliders, parmesan truffle fries and calamari. All delicious (we especially love the [...]

I Don’t Understand.

I thought messes like this would not be happening after Christmas. Maybe Mr. How Sweet Santa forgot to leave my maid under the tree.

Holiday Bar Hopping.

Today we took off on a little adventure with the intent of seeing Vatican Splendors which is here in Pittsburgh until January 9th. Apparently everyone else had the same idea because the line for tickets was out the door, then it was another 4 hour wait to even get inside. So we went and had some snacks instead… for 6 hours. We hit the Capital Grille, Andy’s at the Fairmont, and the Renaissance hotel bar. [possibly my most favorite quote ever] Family and fun… that’s what the holidays are all about!
