Garlic Bread Pizza Crust.
I’ve been seriously craving the Pizza Hut dinner box. I mean… SERIOUSLY.
Yes, Pizza Hut. Please tell me you’ve seen it advertised.
Now I firmly believe that people in this world are cut from two cloths: those who love Pizza Hut, and those who hate it. I, unabashedly, adore it and have since I was a child. Which didn’t help my cause, considering alllll my family members – including that guy I’m now married to – decided that they would rather have the hometown pizza joint’s pizza instead of the mass chain produced pie almost every.single.freaking.time.
Okay. Whatever. I totally understand. Sometimes I want that too. I’m not saying that the hometown pizza isn’t delicious. It usually is. But Pizza Hut is, like… Pizza Hut. It’s always the same. And it’s comforting to know that if I order a pan pizza, I’m going to ingest one of the thickest but fluffiest but chewiest smothered-in-butter, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside crusts. And if I order a thin crust, I’m going to get super slim and crispy crust and pretend that I’m eating healthy pizza with extra cheese, which is delicious even if you have to eat six pieces just to feel full.
The fact is that I love food so much (I mean, like SO MUCH) that every singly solitary bite I put in my mouth? I want it to be fabulous. I want to 100% love it. I want to live it. I want it to thrill me. And more often than not, I want it to make me feel good. No… great. Or amazing.
I am no where near a snob about my eats. It’s just that since we want to love, enjoy and FLIP OUT over nearly every bite we take? We spend time choosing what we will be eating during the week, especially if it includes going out to a restaurant. Really? We just want to freaking love it. I want to remember it.
Hence why I’ve been suffering through each and every Pizza Hut dinner box commercial for about three weeks. Going out for a nice little date or getting a $10 dinner box? Easy delicious.
Actually, I’m lying. The real reason I’ve been suffering? Is, uh… because I was embarrassed to tell my husband that no, I really don’t want to go out for filet with lobster sauce or pear gorgonzola pizza. I’d rather sit here in my sweat pants and order the damn PIZZA HUT DINNER BOX! Food blog what?? I just caaaaaan’t stop thinking about how good it sounds.
But that all changed this week.
As we were hanging … the commercial came on and I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I screamed “OMG I want that dinner box SO bad! I don’t know why, it just looks amazing. Pizza… breadsticks… CINNASTICKS! Ugh. I can’t even take it.”
But! But but but… he’s all “I KNOW! I’ve been craving it too. It looks so good. I want to dominate it with a liter of diet Mountain Dew. But I didn’t want to tell you because I love homemade pizza so much!”
Hmmmmm. Okay. Communication wins again.
So… we still haven’t ordered the Pizza Hut dinner box. I think we had full plans on doing so this weekend, but… but… then I made this. A few weeks ago while traveling, my husband had a garlic bread pizza crust and didn’t really stop talking about. I didn’t stop thinking about it. I increased my go-to dough recipe a bit for a thicker, fluffier crust, then covered every square inch with melted butter and garlic and even parmesan.
Absolutely
no
words.
Garlic Bread Pizza Crust
makes one pizza
1 1/8 cups warm water (100-105 degrees)
3 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 tablespoons honey
1 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 garlic cloves, pressed or very finely minced
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
In a large bowl, combine water, yeast, honey and olive oil. Mix with a spoon, then let sit until foamy, about 10 minutes. Add in 2 1/2 cups flour, salt, garlic powder and dried basil, stirring with a spoon until the dough comes together but it still sticky. Using your hands, form the dough into a ball and work the additional 1/2 cup flour (you don’t need to use all if it is not needed) in to the dough, kneading it on a floured surface for a few minutes. Rub the same bowl with olive oil then place the dough inside, turning to coat. Cover with a towel and place in a warm place to rise for about 1 1/2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
After the dough has risen, punch it down and place it back on the floured surface. Using a roll pin or your hands, form it into your desired shape (sometimes I use baking sheets and do rectangles or free form pizzas). Place the towel back over the dough and let sit in the warm place for 10 minutes. While the dough is rising again, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Mix it with the garlic and 1 tablespoon of parmesan cheese.
Bring the dough back out and using a spoon or pastry brush, douse the outside edges with the butter and garlic mixture. You can spread the butter all over, just make sure to focus on the edges. Use it all up! Continue to make your pizza with your desired toppings. Bake the pizza for 23-25 minutes (or longer if needed, depending on your toppings), or until crust and cheese are both golden. While pizza is baking, melt remaining butter and combine with the last tablespoon of parmesan.
Remove pizza from over and immediately brush the outside edges with parmesan butter, using it all up. Sprinkle a bit of parmesan over top if desired. Serve!
Note: I realize that if you buy yeast in the packets, it can be a pain to measure 3 teaspoons. If you don’t want to do that, I suggest making a double recipe of this crust. However! I also prefer buying jars of yeast these days instead of packets, and just keeping it in the fridge, so I suggest doing that.
Yes. Really.

Totally LOLed when i read this! I too have thought the same thing while watching the Pizza Hut commercial! I’m on a diet though, so I haven’t yet splurged….. I might have to try this recipe!
I’ve never thought about making a garlic pizza crust before. That sounds fantastic. What a great twist on the original!
My brother has started eating pizza hut once a week for the past month @.@ After two false starts on the dinner box (the first time, they delivered to the wrong house (!!! especially surprising since we live in a very prominent downtown business) and the second, they ran out of cinnamon dough), he orders it EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Let me say: it is DELICIOUS and well worth the money. We had to feed two dish kitchen help guys, a family of six, and one waitress with two boxes and there was still an entire box left over. Simply awesome.
Haha, that is amazing.
Made this tonight. First time making pizza dough. It was easy and sooooo delicious!
So glad you liked it!
HOLY CRAP!

And now my mouth is watering and I am craving pizza soooo bad!
And yeah I LOVE Pizza Hut too and the good thing is, whole family loves Pizza Hut so there is no difference of opinions and choices when it comes to Pizza Hut! Love your garlic bread + crust idea! I am so gonna do this next time I make home made pizza.. Thank so much :)
Had Pizza for dinner… didn’t look anywhere near as amazing as yours though!! Have pinned it for next time! :P
Dinner box-guilty! OH my goodness, this post is amazing. Must make this crust the very next pizza night! Thank you!
we got the pizza hut box dinner yesterday to take to my daughters school to eat lunch with her yesterday. the box fed me my husband and my 4 and 5 year old. all for ten dollars and we took some home.
OMG!!!! I have been talking all week that I wanted to make homemade!!!! We live on garlic…so gunna do!!! What like of sauce do you use or was it a homemade sauce??? Are you a cheese on crust, then sauce and toppings or sauce then toppings and cheese on top kind of person? Will have to do his all meat and mine mushrooms garlic and spinach…..yummm yummmm….
THANK YOU!!!!
But tell me you haven’t laughed inappropriately as she sings ‘put it in the box’ over and over again. Because I do. Every time. I sooo wish I could be eating this right now for breakfast. It looks killer!
My husband and I grill pizzas about once a week, which replaced our pizza nights out at a local restaurant and has not only saved us so much money (we have a SLIGHT pizza addiction), but I love that we can create our own pies at home with fresh ingredients. Thank you for posting this idea – this will certainly be our next crust – my mouth was watering over your photos!
There is nothing I don’t like about this post. I would like to know what sauce you use? Sub-standard sauce, with that crust would be a crime.
And now I’m craving for Pizza!
I can’t even blame my pregnancy for it…this looks amazingly delicious. yummm!
I’ve been craving Pizza Hut as well, and was just thinking last night about making pizza instead (even though yeast and I do not get along). I may have to try this– it looks too good not to.
I am so, so making this. Tonight! I am the hugest Pizza Hut fan, and I haven’t been in years, until a few weeks ago we went to go (we were psyched), pulled in, and it was closed. Forever. Actually, homemade pizza is 1 of only a handful things in my savory repertoire, and it’s time I kick it up a notch. Love this recipe (and your pictures, as always!). You rock everything you do, J. xo
I had to call my husband over to the computer when I saw this pizza and we just looked at it silently for a few moments. Speechless. Would you give us the full recipe – the sauce, the amount of cheese, the order of toppings? A crust like that deserves to be treated right.
Holy pictures!!! I can literally TASTE and SMELL the awesomeness of that garlic bread pizza! Torture since I don’t have one right now!!! :)
Thank GOODNESS I am not the only one who has been drooling over Pizza Hut and their commercials recently! Seriously. This makes me happy because just last night, my husband and I were talking about HOW GOOD one of their pizzas sounded, even though we know our homemade pizzas are waaaaaay better. Glad you got your pizza fix and that it was delicious!
ugh, I sooo want pizza! I told my husband this last night…and he went and ordered it and it was theee worst pizza I have had in my life. SO upsetting! It was from pizza hut :( but maybe its different in canada then the US? Anyways, I am thinking about making homemade pizza tonight to satisfy my craving.

Okay. That looks amazing and I want it right now. Buuuuut, I’m hesitant.
Here’s why:
I have yet to find the perfect sauce. I hate grocery store pizza sauce, and we’ve been using Classico Roasted Garlic marinara blended, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I like thick. And spicy. And complicated.
Do you have a recipe you use you would care to share?
Forever indebted to you for this amazing crust,
Katie F.
Unfortunately I am not a good judge because I don’t really like tomato sauce at all. If I have to make a pizza with tomato sauce, we just use Mid’s brand.
Jessica shared a recipe for a homemade tomato sauce once that was super easy and delicious – just crushed tomatoes an onion and olive oil as I recall. Nom nom!
Oh…u make me laugh so much. I love pizza hut too but I thinkwhat u have made here is far superior!!!!!
Alas, Mid’s has not reached the west coast. But my in-law’s live in Iowa, so perhaps I’ll have them ship us some. But in the meantime, if I find a stellar recipe, I’ll let you know. My husband’s tomato-phobic too.
Holy canoli! That looks amazing!
Um, yum?
Ok so I made this tonight. It came out pretty good, the only thing that was weird was that it didnt rise as much as I think yours did. I’m not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I didnt use enough water?
Either way, it came out very tasty, and I will make it again. It was hard not to drink the garlic butter I drizzled on top.
I might alter the amount of water/flour to make it rise more. This was my first time cooking anything involving yeast.
Did the yeast foam well at the beginning?
I ALWAYS kill my yeast with water that is too warm and that results in dough that doesn’t rise.
Just a thought.
Made this tonight! It was absolutely awesome! Thanks for posting this amazing recipe!! :)
Want to try this! About how big do you roll the crust out and what kind of pan are you making it in? Would it be enough dough to make it in 2×9″ cake pans?
Holy mackerel, that looks DIVINE! Do you mind posting the full recipe with the sauce and toppings you used, so that I may sink my teeth into this pizza ASAP? :)
OMG!!! I made this tonight. It goes down as the best pizza ever. Gonna make it all the time now. LOVE IT!
LOVE Pizza Hut! Pepperoni Lovers please! I’ve never made a pizza at home, but from the looks of this pizza, I may have to give it a try! Thanks
Oh my, I’ll have a couple of those please. Thanks.
This is the very BEST pizza crust recipe I’ve ever found! Easy, tasty, and makes a crust just the right thickness – not crisp, not doughy. My husband declared it to be THE pizza dough I should use from now on and asked me to “make sure you send that lady a note to tell her how good this is!!” Isn’t he a sweetie? Anyway, love it love it love it…and love your blog.
I usually see your posts the minute they go up (hooray for crazy time differences), but this weekend we went out of town and I’m just now catching up—that’s what I get for going on vacation! It’s probably a good thing, though, because then i would’ve tried to somehow make this before we left. This is going to sound absolutely crazy, but despite having delicious and authentic Italian pizza right next door, I’ve been craving delivery…like from America. We have a go-to pizza crust, but it just doesn’t have that greasy, “delivery” feel to it. Not saying that yours is going to be greasy, but implying that it looks freaking delicious. Long story short: I want to make this and eat it immediately. And now I’ve left the worlds longest comment about pizza.
As soon as I saw this posted, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I made is Saturday night for my man and I and it was AMAZING. It was really easy too. The garlic bread crust just melted in my mouth. It was so good. I got a little nerdishly excited about the pretty yeast bubbles in the crust. I had a great wheat bread crust, but this will definitely be my new go-to.
I think I could eat pizza every day for the rest of my life and not got sick of it – but this – this is pure genius. *swoon*
Love this!! I had some frozen dough and used that and followed the rest of your steps. My husband never eats the crusty ends of a pizza but he ate all of this. Thank you so much. Cant wait to try this from scratch

I do love pizza, too!!
An excellent pizza recipe begins in the base up, which implies a yummy pizza dough recipe, a carefully prepared pizza sauce and also a superb mix of toppings, which are perhaps the most important ingredients for your perfect pizza.
If you’ve never made a home made pizza recipe, you might be missing the most incredible flavors. Homemade pizza is a superb option for lunch, dinner or simply a quick snack.

Ok, Jessica – soul-bearing time here. I have deep rooted FEAR OF YEAST! Anytime I see a recipe requiring yeast, I run screaming into the night. Something about the very vague “warm water” and bubbles, etc. It never turns out right, so I have given up doing my own from scratch baking. I have used quick rise, other assorted packets I see at grocers, but is there a foolproof way to work with yeast and not kill it? Not sure I know how to use a thermometer to measure water temp. And what exactly is “lukewarm” anyway…? Help!
Most recipes call for the water temperature to be between 105 and 115. Too hot and it can kill the yeast, but if its not warm enough the yeast won’t activate. I use a candy thermometer to measure the temperature of the water. You just stick the thermometer in the water for a few seconds and it should tell you the temperature. Also, make sure your yeast isn’t too old, once a packet or jar of yeast has been opened it will only be good for a short time, usually a few months but sometimes less. Once opened always refrigerate. Working with yeast may sound scary but its really not that bad. Good luck!
This looks amazing!! Can I make it the night before and use it the next night for dinner? It would be sooooo much easier during the week.
