Crunchy-Top Chocolate Chip Orange Muffins.
But wait. First let’s talk about how I apologized to my dishwasher last night. Seriously. I did.
No, I was not being facetious. I didn’t even realize I was asking my kitchen appliance for forgiveness until I opened the door mid-cycle (hello spa day) and cried “oh sorry. this will just be a second,” and retrieved a spatula that I needed RIGHT THIS MINUTE.
SO yeah. Now I am carrying on conversations with inordinate, nonhuman objects in my home. Wait. Did that make sense? I don’t even know if that’s the right word. But none of it makes sense because I talked to my dishwasher 12 hours ago. Like it was a person. And I am not joking in the least. It felt… normal?
And no I wasn’t drunk.
But I would have liked to be. In fact I’d like to be drunk right now because I’m feeling a weeee bit insecure sharing what I’m, uh… really like.
Beer me a muffin please!
Nowwwww let’s make muffins.
Are you one of those weird people that doesn’t really like chocolate with citrus? I am. That’s why I’m allowed to say that. And, you know… call you weird. Because I’ve always thought the chocolate-citrus (especially orange) combo was pukey. Oh yes! That’s a new word. Write it down.
Oh but you probably shouldn’t use it in relation to something food-like that you are trying to sell delicious appeal for to your invisible internet friends.
I’ve just never been a fan of chococitrus things. But I’ve decided that needs to change, so I made these extra delicious and fluffy muffins. Sort of like how my 24/7 brown butter mindset needs to change and how the dent in my couch cushion from me, um… sitting on it…. needs to change and how my I-don’t-clean-up-after-myself-because-I-think-I’m-special syndrome needs to change. Like yesterday.
Wait again. I’m asking a lot of myself today. I’m just going to go eat a muffin. Or at least the crunchy top.
Crunchy-Top Chocolate Chip Orange Muffins
[adapted from my oatmeal chocolate chip cookie muffins]
makes 12 muffins
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 cup milk (any kind will work)
1/4 cup freshly squeeze orange juice
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
zest of two oranges
3/4 cup milk chocolate chips, tossed in a bit of flour
crunchy topping
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons softened butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin tin with liners. Mix the topping ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, salt and sugar to remove all lumps. Measure out milk, then to the measuring cup add in orange juice, vanilla and egg, mixing to combine. Add to dry ingredients, mixing until just combined, then add in melted butter and orange zest, stirring until mixed. Fold in chocolate chips.
Using a 1/4 cup measure, scoop batter equally into liners. Top each with brown sugar topping, then bake for 15-18 minutes, or until muffins are set. Serve with butter! Duh.
Cupcakes for breakfast!

Do you know me? Have we met, because I swear you know what I’m craving? I was just talking about chocolate and orange muffins yesterday. Orange and chocolate is an awesome combination!! I’m making yours, and they seem reasonably healthy! Loves it!!!
DELICIOUS! You’re a genius :)
Yum…they look good!! :)
I love the combination of chocolate and orange. And I love muffins. And I love things with crunchy tops. I want to make muffins now!
Not a big orange and chocolate fan either, but these look amazing!
Oh my gosh Jessica! Anything with chocolate and orange mixed together, is my absolute favorite! So yes… I am one of those weird people, but I love love bacon too! So does that make me not so weird? These look delicious…XoXo
I love the crunchy tops. I am not a fan of chocolate with citrus (or fruit in general) if it is in candy form. But the thought of chocolate chips with citrus (or any fruit) in baked goods is totally different. I think the bread part makes them go together. These sound great!
I love orange and chocolate. My dad buys each of us one of those chocolate oranges each Christmas. Yum
I’ve had quite a few dishwasher run-ins in my day. It seems as SOON as I start the dishwasher I need whatever is inside. Why is that?
Yum! Orange and chocolate are best buds in my book!
The dishwasher didn’t say anything back did it? ‘Cause as far as I know…that is the only time to worry.
Um, YES…I AM one of those weird people! Do you remember (and maybe they still make them) those orange-flavored chocolates that were wrapped up in orange foil and they were round to look like an orange? It is the ONE chocolate I can resist. I never understood why anyone would buy those!
But, a couple years ago, I made cannoli…filled with orange zest and chocolate chips, shells dipped in chocolate. It was a revelation.
So, thanks for listening to my chocolate/citrus saga. I WILL be making these muffins. ;)
I know… I hated the oranges too! But the cannoli? Gimme.
I adore muffins and don’t make them enough – and I’ve never actually had citrus with chocolate before. And I talk to things that aren’t humans all the time. I blame my husband for not listening to me. However, if I were him, I wouldn’t listen either.
I wanna make these with WHITE chocolate chips. Pitter patter goes my heart.
I’m even weirder than you – sometimes I love the choco orange thing and sometimes I don’t. And I can’t even give a reason why. So, I just say it’s hormones. Today, looking at those decadent muffins and the crunchy tops I’d like to snatch, I like chocolate and orange a lot.
Yummy….these look awesome!!! I actually do like orange + chocolate, so I bet I’d looove these!
i’m not a big chococitrus fan either, but by the looks of these that will change. very.very.soon.
Holy yum!
Yum! I am a big chococitrus fan… remember those Terry’s Chocolate Oranges that they’d sell at Christmas, and you’d have to whack them against the wall to get the segments to break apart? Yep, I pretty much adored those. Just like I’m currently adoring these muffins… ;)
These look great!! I was actually planning on making a chococitrus combo this week using your blood orange scone recipe (which by the way are to die for – like one of my absolute favorite new things). I am going to sub navel oranges and add in some dark chocolate chunks. I’m hoping they are tasty.
That sounds amazing.
“Beer me a muffin please”. You crack me up! :-) I think as long as your dishwasher didn’t talk back you are ok…
These muffins look delicious, Jessica! I love the crunchy tops!
I am the exact same way when it comes to citrus and chocolate. Pukey describes it perfectly! But maybe these muffins can help bring me around :D
I have a butt load of oranges that are dying to be used up. This is the recipe that’ll make my taste buds happy! Thank you Jessica! :-D
You are super normal. I used to travel a ton for work–driving all over with the GPS. I named her and apologized to her when I didn’t follow the directions right. Yeah. Super normal.
At least she can talk to you!
Citrus and chocolate, can’t say that I’ve ever tried it or those chocolate-shaped oranges that everyone is talking about, but it does sound pretty yummy. I think I’ll have to start by dipping an orange into some Nutella.
And Jessica, it’s normal to apologize to inanimate objects. Heck, I do it when I walk into the wall. ;-)
Lovin’ that butter melting into all the crevices. Yummmm!
These look soooo good! And not pukey at all;( the only thing that stopped me from making them this morning was my lack of good cane sugar. Because I seriously jumped out of bed to make these this morning. That’s not weird right? Because I think as a Foodie I can justify it:)
Wait I meant ;) because I think the frowny face might give the wrong impression
I’m one of those people who doesn’t like citrus and chocolate. You promise these won’t be pukey? If so, I trust you.
I promise!
You had me at crunchy top!
I heart chocolate and orange together!….. And that melty butter on top… yum!
Chocolate covered oranges from TJs are one of the best things ever! I can’t imagine how great that flavor combo would taste in a muffin.
They look great – but what muffin doesn’t look great with a crunchy top? I’d try them without the chocolate chips. Yes, I am one of the weird ones with the chocolate-orange pukey feelings. My mom put one of those chocolate oranges in my stocking one year. Can you say YUCK? It was neat to break it into segments, but the flavor? ewwwwww. So, maybe these would be good without the chocolate chips. Maybe with white chocolate chips, as someone else suggested. By the way, you are not crazy for talking to the dishwasher…definitely only if it talks back. :)
I’ve always hated those too… I totally understand.
Yum! Can you use white whole wheat flour? What is the difference between that a pastry flour? Thanks!!!
I’ve never used white whole wheat flour so I’m not sure, but I’m thinking it would be fine!
I love any kind of muffin with a crunchy top! Chococitrus combinations could just be the new black! Looks like the bees knees, I see some scones like this in my future, like now!
Give me a crunchy top muffin any day. I totally talk to non-human things way more regularly than I’d like to admit.
I adore how blurry the line between muffin and cupcake can be! And I am one of those weird people who loves citrus with chocolate. Any fruit with chocolate, actually, is the only way fruit should be eaten!
I’m DY-ING at the image of you opening the dishwasher and saying “oh, sorry this will just take a minute”! haha
Honestly, you make my morning every day with tidbits like that.
I want to make these soooo bad! But I’m allergic to citrus, so I’ll have to sub for some other fruit. :/
Yeah, so I talk to my house plants. They need it. They like it.
I know these are awesome because it has the zest of 2 oranges in only 12 muffins! My orange tree is dropping fruit like mad! Wish you were here…..I have a grapefruit tree too….
OMG I want to move in.
Hahah beer me a muffin. The crunchy topping looks so yum-stastic
Oh my! So, I also don’t really like chocolate and orange together, or really any citrus for that matter. It just never seems right to me. But, if you feel the same and like these muffins, then I want to try one right now!
Citrus is the most amazing flavor…goes with almost anything like that perfect little black dress.
Ugh those just look like stinkin’ perfection. I’m not usually a huge citrus in baked goods person (I know, I’m weird) but I think I could easily get on board with these for their crunchy top alone (okay, and the chocolate chips).
I also couldn’t get on the citrus and chocolate bandwagon…those chocolate oranges that I would get a Christmas, that you slammed on the floor to get them open??? Sick….
But maybe I’ll give these a try………………
A deeelicious combo!! How ’bout we trade doughnuts for muffins?? mmmk?
One of my favourite flavours is Orange. And in a muffin, count me in.
I could just eat the topping and never get to the actual muffin. They look beautiful!
YES, let’s make muffins today! I big time love chocolate chip muffins…mmm i could use one a snack like now. PS. you talking to appliances is a lot weirder than when I find myself talking to the chicken I’m about to roast (not kidding).
Those look insanely good. I love that you paired chocolate with them! I have an unpublished recipe for something orangey. Tis the season for citrus. Mine has lots of cream cheese frosting rather than chocolate. I love your chocolate direction!
Don’t worry. I talk to my airplane all the time. I consider it “My Baby” for now. And babies need a good talking-to, just like the rest of us…
