Tuesday Things.
1. Even though I had two failed attempts at buttercream last week, I still had to snap that obligatory meringue-on-the-whisk photo. And trust me, the fails had nothing to do with anything other than the fact that I have the patience of a toddler.
2. Those 80’s glam sharpies that I showed on Sunday? They are changing my life. I am forever a 4th grader.
3. I’m trying to sleep smarter. I’ve always said I haven’t got a good nights sleep since getting married (hello snoring and husband that thrashes around all night) but I’m sure it obviously has something to do with the fact that I’m eternally connected to all things technology. I’m trying to disconnect earlier than usual and not watch four episodes of Friends reruns every night – like episodes I’ve seen 800 times – but so far, I’m failing.
4. I should just name this post “other people’s stuff I’m loving” because I’m about to throw a thousand links your way since I can’t choose: this gin and tonic sorbet has me freaking out, these pancakes, or shall I say the pictures of these pancakes make me want to eat beets… sorta, this styled Valentine’s day shoot is how I wish my entire life looked every single day and these bruschetta burgers are going to be dinner later this week. People are killing it.
5. You know what? I’m still very much in a heated debate with myself over those wedge sneakers that I mentioned a few weeks ago. Are these really going to continue to be a thing? There were so not made for someone like me (short and stumpy) and I’m pretty sure the only reason I’m infatuated is because I could get away with being comfortable and three inches taller at the same time. This rarely happens. I definitely fear that I will look horrific.
6. This is going to be a very TV heavy post because well, other than cook, write and read, I watch TV. Most boring life ever. So: Girls? Enjoyable. As usual, embarrassing. Anyone else feel extreme secondhand humiliation when Marnie broke down in the wine cellar? Yeah. However, I have to say that the show that has me wishing the weeks away is Nashville. I’m talking full-blown, normal HBO caliber obsession. I’m basically living for Wednesdays. I want to move to Nashville. I want to be a country star! I can’t even sing in the shower.
7. Also, even though in my opinion The Office should have bowed out gracefully about three years ago, I love this piece questioning why they must screw with Jim and Pam. I think I liked it so much because my husband is SERIOUSLY FREAKING OUT. I mean, he can’t even take that they are toying with their relationship, even though we all know they will come out fine. It’s really bothering him. So passionate. Hilarious.
8. Pretty convinced we have the microwave from hell. Not only does it sound like the house is going to blow up when it’s being used, but after 30 seconds it leaves 3/4 of whatever is in there scalding hot and somehow the rest ice cold. Sometimes after 12 seconds a bowl is so hot I can’t grab it to touch. Other days, three minutes isn’t enough to warm something that is already at room temperature. Riddle me that. I’ve decided the world is indeed ending and it’s started with this dumb appliance.
9. I’m about five minutes away from going to see Safe Haven by myself. I love seeing movies by myself. In the afternoon of course, because I’m unfortunately still a little bit of a neurotic, insecure freak.
10. This song came on my iPod yesterday when I was about to quit a workout and totally saved my life. It bought me like, 20 extra minutes. I turned it up so loud my eardrums almost burst. Is that what all the kids are doing these days?
11. Speaking of dinners, I’ve been cooking an insane amount of dinner lately. For about three months we were eating out SO MUCH. It was awful. Now I’m on a dinner cooking spree (like in addition to all of my blog/freelance cooking) and it is amazing. Last night I roasted a chicken and am currently using the leftovers to make this chili. Freaking love that soup. I’ve been thinking of it since I woke up this morning. Which should clue you in to how productive I’ve been…
12. I did, however, buy insanely bright, glittered green and teal eyeliner. So there’s that. Productivity at it’s finest. I think we can classify February 19th as a win.

That microwave needs to go. In other news, I want those Sharpies. Just sayin.
Gin and tonic sorbet??? Holy hell. SIGN ME UP.
And you may want to immediately stop using your microwave. Those issues mean it’s broken and its life is over… and you don’t want it leaking waves sooooo… yeah, time for a new one!
G & T sorbet?!?! Sleep…. I need some….love the egg whites and butter cream ;)
its so hard to get away from all the damn screens in order to get some sleep! but LCD screens actually sap your serotonin levels, which really does make it harder to fall asleep! the newer tv screens might do the same thing, who knows! maybe force yourself to read a book or something? good luck with that!
I thought this past girls was the least awkward/humiliating they may have had yet. Thank goodness because I for one needed a breather!
Guess what I just put in my Amazon cart? A boatload of 80’s Glam Sharpies, and then because other people “bought them” I had to add some crazy colored post-its. I need both like I need a hold in my head. But I caved… thank you for the push ;)
I have always slept with the television on and was convinced I couldn’t sleep otherwise…but then the baby got here.
She sleeps in a bassinet in our room and I keep a noise machine going with the “rain” sound. That way I can keep it dark, but also muffle and little noises in the night. Babies have a really bad startle reflex that will wake them up when things like dishwashers or heaters kick on.
Anyways. Best sleep of MY LIFE. It turns out, the rain machine is the way to go!! Enough noise to keep me from laying there feeling all weird, but none of the glow and weird infomercials from the television at 3 am. Try it!!
MY MICROWAVE IS HAUNTED TOO. But its thing is when it stops, it keeps going. Like it doesn’t stop. The buzzer beeps, yes, but it continues cooking. Or buzzing. Not the buzzer buzzer, but the engine buzzer. Wait, do microwaves have engines? What’s the word I’m looking for? Machine? Heartbeat? Organ?
In other words, I’ll meet you at Safe Haven.
I think last week’s Girls episode was one of my favorites. Really random, like a short film almost. Anyway.
I am a girly-girl movie freak….went to see Save Haven with my beastie this past weekend; it really pains me to say this, it was so bad. Not in a it’s-so-bad-it’s-good way, but a why-did-josh-duhamel-peak-in-win a date with tad Hamilton-way. Unless you’ve read the book and know how I ends (so strange).
Totally agree with you about The Office, well, I agree with your hubby. I’m also freaking out. Like why couldn’t they leave those two alone and showcase other characters? What about Meredith and her messed up life? Or Phyllis, are she and Bob still married? And Creed needs more one liners because he is, by far, the funniest this season. So yea, I miss cutesy Jim and Pam.
Will be purchasing Sharpies very soon. I need more color in life, especially from the 80s!
You (and your husband) should read this article about the Jim/Pam/Brian shenanigans. This is how I feel about it: http://www.avclub.com/articles/office-shows-pitfalls-fake-reality-becoming-real,92329/
I love that pitbull song! And for the love of food bloggin’, get a new microwave:)
I am also EXTREMELY bothered by The Office screwing with Jim & Pam. STOP IT!!!!
One good thing about having a birthday on a Tuesday…Tuesday Things!!
If Jim and Pam don’t live happily ever after when this show ends, I will question my very existence on earth. Seriously. I know that they should be showing some sort of marital problem between these two because nothing is perfect but I can’t handle the super awkward stress/tension between them. NOT COOL.
THAT SONG. Literally, dying. omg. Trust me on the pancakes, you cannot taste the beets at ALL. Beets are gross. Not sure about the last 2 Girls episodes. We’ll see how the season plays out… I’ve also been secretly mad that they’re eff’ing with J+P’s relationship! AHHH
You should break down and just buy a Hello Kitty microwave. They have them at Target…and I totally would have listened to the Japanese 14 year old in me and bought it if my apartment didn’t already have one built in above the range… darn.
Also, there is a damask print Crock Pot at Target that I have my eyes on, and it’s only $20 but I dunno… I guess I”m scared of committment when it comes to appliances? Does that count as an appliance? Whatever. I’m getting cheese fries.
I kid you not, I had the same debate with myself over wedge sneakers. I finally gave in when I found a pair for only $9, and I actually love them. I wore them to walk all over Chicago last weekend, and my feet only slightly hurt afterward! Here’s my post: http://simpleflavorsarekey.blogspot.com/2013/02/wedgin.html (not trying to advertise, just wonder how many people have been having this exact debate as me… Ha)
I feel like the entire cast of Girls needs to take a class on crying, because every scene where one of them cries I’m transported immediately out of the show (and I LOVE the show). Also, yes on Nashville. Can’t wait for it to be back!
AGREE!!! Perhaps Claire Danes could show them a thing or two!
Wedge Sneakers…. Do it!! I’m 5’3″ on a good day and just bought the Nike “Dunk Sky Hi” Wedge in olive and LOVE them!!! So cute and comfy. Have no clue if this trend will last, but so far me likey :)
Nashville is ah-mazing!! But then again I like anything that included big curls and sparkles.
Hate it when our the buttercream fails… foodie problems lol
I really don’t know how I feel about wedge sneakers. The first time I saw a pair my initial reaction was-no. no I don’t like that. But, they are growing on me. I don’t know why, but I’m starting to think they are cute. My brain is confused. A sneaker and a wedge should not go together, they serve different purposes. How can it be that I find them somewhat cute? That bruschetta burger? How can you not want to eat a burger stuffed with cheese? Everything is always better when it is stuffed with cheese.
Are you trying to make just buttercream or buttercream icing?? If your making buttercream icing I have a great recipe I use for my cupcakes!!
I have to catch up on Girls ASAP!! I may have to buy HBO for the next month so i can watch the episodes on demand and then cancel it again.
My boyfriend and I are seriously freaking out about Pam and JIm…I have to read that article of why?!?!?!??!
I have spent this whole season of The Office crying, thanks to what they are doing to Pam & Jim. Ridiculous!!
I got the wedge sneakers!!! I thought the same thing, hey I can be comfy and yet taller and wear them out to bars and sporting events etc.
Well i decided to wear them to my brothers girlfriends 21st birthday extravaganza in the south side. yes, blah, south side (so not for a 30 year old) But we went to diesel, yes diesel, blah, and i actually felt great with them! I was even able to keep up with the young ones all night.
you should do it. I got mine from DSW!
So. Dude. I’ve been PISSED about The Office messing wiht Jim and Pam. I am sorry. Mess with ANYONE ELSE you want. Don’t mess with the Halperts!
On a side bar – wedge sneakers were MADE for people like us (short and stumpy!)) They elongate the legs. Just sayin’
That bruschetta burger link just changed my plans for dinner tonight. Also, id totally go see Safe Haven with you if I could, my fiance wont go with me and Im about to go by myself as well. :)
Cute post – I’d say go for the wedges! I think for Spring they’d be nice!
OK this is going to sound weird but I swear you’re my best virtual friend ever – so many things you say I’m like OMG, me too!! Totally agree on Nashville, I didn’t even like the first episode and now I’m obsessed. And that song is one of my top picks on my workout playlist next to Usher’s “More” :) Thanks for being so honest, funny and downright entertaining, you make my Tuesdays so much brighter!
I am also hooked on Nashville!! It is driving me nuts they are taking 2 week breaks between some episodes, ugh! 8 more days to go!
omg it’s killing me too! i’m pathetic.
I fall asleep to TV almost every night. I like the background noise! It’s such a horrible habit though. I’m also convinced that sleeping with my cell phone so close to my head is going to kill all of my brain cells. Aweessoommeeeee.
The Office is RUINING my life right now, I’ve been seriously distraught about it. I am, also, freaking the F out. It’s giving me anxiety and not in the Michael-Scott way that it normally does. UGH.
PS, I bought a Tarte amazonian clay blush after my bestie AND you talked about them…and I cannot wait for it to get here!
ahhh what color did you get?
natural beauty!
Cute! I’m a Nashville freak, too! I record it and watched 2 back-to-back the other night…didn’t want it to end :)
Thank you for the 80s glam sharpies! I have them on my Target list for tomorrow! I also think that the platform sneakers will be a no go for me. Tried them on and I looked so stupid, my husband was laughing his butt off at me.
Going to be trying out the bruschetta burger hopefully next week, and i feel you for about the eating out. I miss my crockpot so much! Only 30 more days until I can get our stuff back & start unpacking EVERYTHING! Thank you for the post!
I really don’t know if I would be able to stop watching Friends reruns at the end of the night. I have just started watching Girls and am going to watch episode 6 of the first season tonight. I am LOVING it so far! Cracks me up!
Please watch Jim Gaffigan’s comedy skit all about Hot Pockets…your description of your microwave’s cooking abilities is right on point with that. Actually, watch ALL of his comedy skits, because he is beyond hilarious (especially the “Mr. Universe” HBO special)
Believe it or not, that Pitbull song has been played at a few of my ballroom dance competitions.
I don’t know if it’s creepy to post a link to someone else’s blog..but I’m going to anyway.
I think she TOTALLY pulls off the wedge sneaker.

If you can find some cheap-y ones, why not go for it?!
That chili of yours has always caught my eye.
Buttercream. Like real buttercream with egg yolks, not butter + powdered sugar. Yes, patience. Enjoy that one :) But I’d love to lick your ‘fails’ right off that gorgeous whisk image!
Wedges – buy them. Shoes, if they’re not taking food off $ the table, then buy them :)
I am not sleeping either and I KNOW it’s because the second I wake up I grab my phone and stare at it with on eye (too blind without contacts to use both) until I”m certain my cornea is on fire. The Friends episodes are killing me too though – ugh!
German buttercream is my absolute favorite. If you can madge pudding, you can make german buttercream. If I need to, I throw the custard in the fridge to cool and come back later.
Madge = make. My phone is weird.
I’m soo stupidly entrenched in Jim and Pam (PB &J!) that I am also an emotional wreck.. I couldn’t even finish reading that link about it because it was seriously upsetting to think about.. wah. Let me know if your husband finds a support group I can join.
I was in a major cooking slump for almost two months, as well. I made a menu plan over the weekend and have been ecstatic to get back into the kitchen to start cooking dinner again. It feels amazing!
omg those pink drinks. THOSE PINK DRINKS. i want into that styled valentine’s day shoot in real life please and thank you!!
#8 – when my parents redid their kitchen, they put in some fancy brand microwave (btw, they’re all the same, it’s just the label on the outside). It has the magical ability to heat the plate/container, but not the food. When the food does heat, it generally explodes. I hate using it when I visit. It almost makes me want to make oatmeal on the stove. Almost.
1) I have to come here every week because you are the only person I “know” who will talk about Girls. And last week was AMAZING. With Hannah and the guy. AMAZING. This week was pretty good. Though Booth Jonathon breaking the wine bottles…AWKward.
2) Nashville – YES! Yes! I’m obsessed with this show. And last week’s was such a damn disappointment because you expected so much more and it was just all a set-up episode. Frustrating. And please…Deacon, grow up. Like you saw her hug a guy and then flipped your shit. When is he going to figure out that the older daughter is his kid!? And when are they going to kiss in an elevator again!?
Could not agree more with you about ‘The Office.’ I’ve re-watched the first 5 seasons over and over and like to pretend the others never really happened. They are just a bad dream. Of course, I’m watching every painful minute to the very end.
Love your Tuesday posts!! I too cannot stop playing games when I go to bed…its like I’m obligated to catch up my phone before I go to sleep or it’s the end of the world!! I’ve started putting my phone across the room…and when my electric blanket is on..no way my phone is gonna get me outta my super warm bed! Good Luck sleeping better!! =)
