January Favorites: Beauty.
Hi hi! January favorites are HERE.
One of my new year’s resolutions is to actually GET READY every single day and I’m happy to report that I’ve pretty much done that! There have been one or two days that I’ve done no makeup, but actually getting ready makes me feel SO much better.
Okay, so I’m still freaking out that Benefit Gimme Brow isn’t back in stock. Is it ever coming back?! I desperately need something to replace it! I tried the Glossier Boy Brow (hated it, more on that here) and a few of you recommended this Bobbi Brown one – but the issue is that the brush is HUGE. If you’ve ever tried gimme Brow, you know how tiny and minuscule the brush is and you get great precision with it. I need something like that!
This month I have been SO regimented with my skincare routine. I mean, I’ve been really good about it before and I never ever ever go to bed with makeup on my face (it makes me sick to even think of!), but since Emilia was born, I’ve almost started using that time as “me time”(< omg I hate that saying). But anyway – I’ve really taken the time to do a full skincare regimen every morning and night. As soon as Max was born, I was so exhausted that I was often skip putting anything on my face in the morning and at night, I wouldn’t always wait to do serum, oil, moisturizer, etc. But now I am! And I’m seeing huge results. I think I’m going to try and do some before/after pics! Needless to say, that’s why almost this entire post is skincare.
So on to my faves!
Dr. Jart Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream. OMG, this is by far my favorite thing of the entire month. I got this at the end of December but ended up getting so sick and not wearing any makeup. This is a color correcting moisturizer with sunscreen. The color correcting is INSANE. I have some redness on my face and some days, I end up just using this because it makes your skin tone incredibly even. It’s green but changes to a light skin tone color once rubbed in. I also use it under makeup and it’s great – but you do have to let it dry down and sink in for 10 minutes or so. I have told so many people about this and absolutely LOVE it.
Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream. So I bought this because I was out of my Lala Retro Cream, thinking it would be the same but with some extra stuff. It isn’t nearly as thick as the Lala cream, but I am loving it! I still had to buy another Lala since I have the driest skin in the universe, but this stuff is awesome. I add it into the Lala cream and occasionally just use this in the morning. They describe it as adding a “shot” of something good to your other creams. Loving it so far. The consistency reminds me of Sunday Riley Tidal which I also love.
Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum. I’ve been using this serum for close to two years but have been religiously using it every single morning, after my Caudalie Moisturizing Toner, followed by moisturizer. 100% love it. Even with my dry skin, I can use this every single day as long as I moisturize after. I really feel like it brightens my skin! I just two pumps every morning to cover my face and neck. Drunk Elephant can do no wrong!
Sunday Riley Good Genes. I KNOW. This is a repeat favorite but one I can’t stop mentioning. But for the last two months I have used it every other night without skipping. I use it right after the toner. It is SO good. It improves any texture on your skin. I can’t use it more than 3ish days a week, but it’s so, so good when I do use it. I really want to alternate it with the Luna Oil, but I can’t use that yet since I’m breastfeeding. I have to moisturize after or this does rip up my skin.
OleHenrickson Banana Bright Eye Cream.I have so many mixed thoughts on this, but I do really love it. First, I think the name is so misleading. This does absolutely nothing to brighten my eyes. I don’t have horrid undereye circles, but I do have some. Maybe I’m just SO exhausted with a newborn + toddler that nothing can combat the circles at the moment? I just don’t find it brightening whatsoever. BUT. The reason it’s in my favorites and what I do love about it – it’s a great cream to put under concealer! Actually the best one I’ve found. The Lala cream is what I usually just use under my eyes when I put it on my face, but it’s so thick. This cream is such a great consistency and makes concealer go on super well. Love it for that reason. So I only use this during the day.
RMS Magic Luminizer. Another repeat mention from last month – OMG. This is the only highlighter I have used for close to two months. LOVE LOVE LOVE. It just gives the best glow ever. Some days I use just this, mascara, concealer and that’s it. Oh and BROWS! How could I forget.
MAC Retro Metallic Lip color in Metallic Rose. Eeeep! I love this color and I love the formula! This stuff does not MOVE from your lips. It’s not drying at all (but it’s not moisturizing either), but I do like a clear lip balm over it. This color is so awesome and I’ve been wearing it all month! People either love or hate the metallic look and while I don’t totally love it, this shade is just so pretty. Especially if you’re cool toned.
That’s that for January! I’d love to hear what you are loving right now. And what you have you eye on too! I kind of want to try the new Fenty matte lipsticks.
{as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are some amazon and general reward style affiliate links above. thank you for being here!}

I loved Good Genes too then I tried Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos and love that even MORE! I think it changed my life-ha! Thanks for the fun read! 🙂
ahh really?! i always have a strong reaction to glycolic acid so i have avoided this but since i’m a slave to drunk elephant…
I was also devastated about the Benefit Gimme Brow, BUT Too Faced Brow Quickie has been a life-saver!
YES!! I like Two Faced Brow Quickie more!
going to try this one too! thanks!
I asked at both Ulta and Sephora and SUPPOSEDLY (at least they both gave the same answer) it’s supposed to be back this month. I’m glad I bought 3 last fall 🙈
This is basically a total dupe for Gimme Brow and super cheap!
https://www.ulta.com/make-me-brow-eyebrow-gel-mascara?productId=xlsImpprod13561153
Yes, I love this stuff! It has a very small brush just like the benefit one.
Just getting ready to comment with the same link! I switched to this about a year ago from gimme brow, almost as good and so, so cheap.
thanks guys!! i placed an order for it (because for some reason getting to ulta with both kids is hard!) and i can’t wait to try!
I’ve also been making a real effort about my skin and have been trying a variety of products. I love the Lala cream and then have been using products from Deceim brands… slightly cheaper price points for some products and seriously money savers for others. Have you tried products from The Ordinary? I’ve been using their products in place of Good Genes (because.. $$$)and Ive been having good results. You can buy them through Sephora now (yay, points!).
i’ve really been wanting to try the ordinary products!! so you’re liking them?! i was afraid they’d be too good to be true. def want to try!
which ordinary product are you using instead of good genes? I want to try but their names and product descriptions are kind of hard to decipher for a non-makeup/skincare nerd such as me.
I’m so sad about Gimme Brow too, but I’ve been using Benefit KaBrow for the past few months and I really love it – maybe even more than Gimme Brow! It’s more of a drier product in a pot with an actual brush instead of the “mascara” type brush, but it gives you a lot of control which I like!
i will check that out!! thanks molly!
I’ve been loving the Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum too!! It’s so brightening and I think it does firm the skin as well! I’ve been looking at the Banana Bright Eye Cream for night, not totally sold on it yet as I’m looking for something to combat some fine lines that have been creeping up!
i also really love the drunk elephant eye cream!! it’s awesome.

Ulta has a brow mascara for $3 no joke- the Essence brand, and it’s a small brush and works as well as gimme brow! I have been loving all the Kiehl’s skincare this month (got a gift set for Christmas)!
so many people have mentioned this so i ordered it! thanks carly!
Just bought gimme brow at Sephora like a month ago?? What happened to it???
i only learned this from googling but apparently it was recalled because someone used it as mascara or something? even though it says NOT to do that – ha.
Love hearing your faves! I recently started accutane again, which means I have to be very choosy with what goes on my skin (although it has cleared up drastically!). I loved FAB beauty the first time I was on accutane, but this time I’m sweating by Peter Thomas Roth’s cloud cream. OMG. It is the most spectacular thing I’ve ever worn. I wasn’t a huge fan of the serum, but I’m struggling to love serums. I have the sample set from Sephora of Drunk Elephant’s day/night duos and the jury is still out. You are motivating me to be more consistent with it though – EVERYONE loves it! BUT seriously do yourself a favor and get that cloud cream. Pure M-A-G-I-C. Oh, and the Tula resurfacing mit thing. Also amazing and gentle on your skin for clearing away those dead skin cells!
definitely trying the cloud cream!!! thanks!
Have you tried any of the Anastasia Beverly Hills brow products? I love that they have so many color options (I’m a redhead so it can be tricky to find a brand with a color that will work). I have no idea if their tinted brow gel is anything like Gimme Brow, but I swear by the Dipbrow Pomade (it does take some getting used to though — it’s definitely not foolproof!) Also, I’m still breastfeeding my second daughter and was just wondering if your skin freaks out at all during pregnancy or breastfeeding with all the hormonal changes? I have to be really careful about trying new products because my skin will just flip, but you seem to try so many new products so often! How?? (PS: I’m loving the baby updates. I could just eat Emilia up.)
yes to anastasia! i love their stuff and i use the brow definer along with the gimme brow!
i think the reason my skin doesn’t freak out too much is because it is SO dry. if anything, i get crazy weird dryness from the hormonal changes! i usually don’t break out, i think because my skin is lacking in oil, ha.
in general though i don’t try too many new crazy things on my face that often (though i do try a bunch of makeup on my eyes and stuff!) – most things i get are pretty gentle because i am afraid of stuff breaking me out! and thank you. :) xoxo
Sooo I talked to someone at Benefit and Gimme Brow IS coming back! Someone used it as mascara and sued Benefit because it irritated her eye, so they have to change the formula to make it more “eye safe”… I am so mad at whoever did that for ruining it for all of us!
I don’t know timeline but they seemed to think it would happen this year. Just FYI!
gah! thank goodness!
You should try this Trish McEvoy long wear brow mascara – I’m obsessed! I’ve never tried the gimme brow, so that will have to be next on my list when it comes back in stock!
thanks for the suggestion!!
What moisturizer do you use in the morning after your Drunk Elephant day serum? Curious! Thanks for sharing your products-Your recommendations always become mainstays in my “arsenal”!
the lala moisturizer! the same one that i use at night – but i can do it because my skin is so dry. i think for some people it’s too thick. the new protini one i linked above is what i will also use and it’s lighter!
So I do have the Bobby Brown brow and the brush *is* bigger than Gimme Brow BUT if you hold it at an angle, you can just use the smaller end of the brush! That’s what I do! I also use the Smashbox Brow Tech To Go – it’s forgiving and you don’t have to be super precise with the strokes. I am not a huge fan of the gel end of the product, so I usually use one swipe of the Gimme Brow of the BB brow to smooth everything down at the end. Or a regular eyebrow brush does well to blend in the strokes from the Smashbox Brow.
thanks for these tips!! going to try!
I just ordered that Banana Bright Eye Crème on a whim and I’m so happy to hear you like it. I was hoping to use it for similar purposes. Can’t wait until that little Sephora package comes in the mail.
woohoo!
European Wax Center sells a brow gel that is identical to Gimme Brow. It has a small brush and makes doing your brows simple. I love it!
thanks so much!!
How is the staying power on the Dr. Jart Cream? I’ve like the IT Bye Bye Redness but it disappears in what feels like an hour.
i feel like it’s pretty great – but i have dry skin! i also haven’t worn it yet while sweating or working out, so i’m not quite sure of that. but regularly, i think it’s great!
Try the Essence “make me brow” as a dupe for Benefit. It works great and is super affordable! You may never go back to Benefit!
totally just ordered it!
I just got the Becca Light Chaser Highlighter in Champagne Dream Flashes Bellini on sale and it’s a really pretty, luminous pinky gold that I’m loving.
ooooh i saw that! so tempted!
Essence brow gel is way cheaper than Gimme Brow and it works the same!! You can get at Target or Ulta I think.
i ordered it!! thanks angela!
I looooooooove Good Genes, but when I paired it with Tidal, it made my skin burn, so I now use it with Peter Thomas Roth Cloud Cream. It’s perfume free, so that’s an added bonus. I have to say that reading your beauty favorites every month sends me to Sephora like, “Jessica says I need to try this”! Ha! They must think I have a personal beauty advisor ;)
oh crazy! a few people are mentioning cloud cream so i’m definitely going to get some. :)
The Dr. Jart cream is amaaAAAazing! Loved the heck out of it, and super sad that I can’t have fun with it right now because poor grad student life means drugstore errthang. But seriously, it was so good and I loved that I could wear it by itself and still have some coverage, even with my weird hapa-but-pale-ish skin tone.
If you ever find a cheaper dupe for that puhhlease let us know!!
I will look for one! xoxo
Did you use Good Genes while you were pregnant too?
I did! The lactic acid is one of the things you can use. :)
Love that there are some cruelty free brands in here! I’ve never tried Drunk Elephant before, definitely checking into it based on your recs.
My eyebrows are so sparse. People rave about the Anastasia brow wiz and years ago I read about a dupe on a beauty blog. NYX is 9.95 compared to the $30 for the Anastasia and seriously they look the same. I swear by NYX and buy it at Ulta but googled it is at the motherland aka target. This is been my brow pen for years!
I’ve been using the Ursa Major brand C serum and love it! SO brightening I almost don’t need highlighter. I don’t think they carry it at Sephora, but it’s GREAT.

maybe you could do a vlog post about your skincare regime – that might be fun. For the next 60 days I’m going to be using the Korean 10 step skincare regime. I’m 51 *cough* and want to see if anything helps with the lines before I wave the white flag and use Botox. I heard amazing things about their “protocol” and am going to try it.
For January i’ve been on the hunt for a new undereye concealer. i have an ulta order coming and am going to try shape tape (again). i tried it once and didnt like but maybe i was using wrong ? everyone else seems to like it ? my skin has been a bit crazy lately. ive been doing whole30 and i expected good skin from it but man its been break out city (hello am i 13 ?) and random patchy dryness. and this weather ugh it doesnt help at all. i do love the lala cream and sunday riley juno oil. those 2 things have helped a lot. ive been debating on pulling the trigger on Tatcha Essence or SKII but having a hard time justifying it. Also realized this month my fave mascara is likely better than sex from too faced. why do i try anything else ?
I have been loving listening to the Forever 35 podcast – they talk about fave skin care products and other “self care” routines, including cooking/reading cookbooks. You should be a guest on there!
I got the philosophy hope in a jar skin tint for Christmas – https://www.sephora.com/product/renewed-hope-in-jar-skin-tint-P417009?skuId=1898485&keyword=hope%20in%20a%20jar%20tinted%20moisturizer
I love it! I have really dry skin and sometimes even tinted moisturizers seem to show dryness – this is so smooth. I only need to use a little and it has great coverage and really evens out my skin.
I tried both good genes and DE TLC framboos and I preferred DE! But regarding your dry skin- mine gets super dry also and I have been using Boscia beauty oil on top of the Framboos serum at night and it has changed my life! I was reluctant to put oil on my face but it’s the only thing that makes my skin feel soft when I wake up
thanks for sharing the dr.jart – will have to try that.
have you tried milk makeup’s blur stick? i love trying the sephora favourites little sample packs that they make, and the one i just got has the blur stick in it. its weird, but i love it. i think? it goes on transparent and almost feels… waxy? powdery? on your skin. but it does kind of blur out your complexion and the biggest thing i like is that it helps my concealer go on SO SMOOTHLY! i don’t wear foundation (which is why the dr.jart appeals to me to do colour correction), so i just touch up spots with concealer. the blur stick makes it go on like magic. i kind of love it. the only thing i’m not sure about is whether or not its causing me to have a few pimples. i have had three or four since i started using it. it’s not supposed to clog so it could be unrelated because i do get them once in a while. anyways… love this new product and wanted to know what others thought. :)
I use Charlotte Tilbury’s Legendary Brow Gel in Supermodel & It is amazing. Super awesome brush, I highly recommend it!

Ooh, there are do many products from this list I want to order. I’m a skin care (or had my husband says, lotions and potions) junkie. I’m fifty one (eek) and trying to stay away from Botox and all that jazz. If only a product could magically erase the lines around my 👄 lips! I love Drunk elephant. I just ordered the Charlotte Tilbury brow gel.
