Our Favorite Saucy, Smoky Baked Beans.
Okay hi! It’s basically officially summer so let’s just start doing the whole baked beans thing.
Because it’s time! It’s really time.
Even if you are making them for yourself. You’re worth the good beans, I’m telling you.
If you’ve been here long enough you may remember when I didn’t even like these summer favorite beans.
Times have changed!
Years ago I made these bourbon beans and they hooked me. Seriously, hooked me! They turned me into a baked bean lover and now I’m convinced that no outdoor cookout, barbecue or summer meal is complete without a side of baked beans.
Now.
While I do really love these slow cooker bourbon baked beans, this here is the recipe I’ve found myself making more often for the last few years. Probably since I’ve had kids and had a little less time on my hands.
Also, I should warm you that it’s kind of semi-homemade. I mean, it’s definitely semi-homemade. Not kind of.
But they are so easy!
While my slow cooker beans recipe uses dry beans (so, like, the entire recipe is from scratch), I actually used canned baked beans in this one and I LOVE them. Since making this, I’ve become quite the baked bean snob over here. I’ve tried many different brands and varieties but for this particular recipe, I always come back to the Bush’s Grillin’ Beans. Specially, we love the southern pit bbq or the bourbon bacon flavor. They are so good in this recipe!
That being said, you can use whatever can of baked beans you can find. Just throwing out my random recommendations in case you want them.
I find that this recipe yields a thicker, more syrupy baked bean, in a really good way if that makes sense. Don’t let it scare you off! They are not overly sweet, but they are obviously still sweet.
However, there is enough dijon, smoked paprika and chipotle in here that it’s no overwhelmingly sweet.
Yes. So much flavor.
I have adapted this over the years from Ree’s recipe. Her’s are absolutely amazing, they just make a ton of baked beans! And even when we have a party or I take the beans somewhere, I don’t need that many. Lots of people in my family have an aversion to baked beans – hey, even I had one up until the last decade!
My mom still puts cut up hot dogs in her baked beans and I just… cannot. I mean, I love a good hot dog. We ate hot dogs this past weekend; felt like summer. I just don’t want them cut up in my baked beans!
P.S. if any of you have been around long enough, do you remember when I discovered my obsession with baked beans and loved putting them on top of poached or fried eggs, on toast? That was SO GOOD. Def doing it again.
Anyway.
This makes a “nice” sized amount, even if I just make them for our family. We eat, save a bit for leftovers and freeze the rest if I don’t give it away. It’s perfect!
Give me a plate of these with a smash burger and I’m good to go!
Baked Beans
Favorite Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 2 sliced bacon, diced
- 1 small sweet onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 TO 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 (22 ounce) cans baked beans (I love Bush’s Grillin’ Beans for this recipe)
- 2 slices bacon, for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Heat a large (oven safe, if you don’t want to transfer) skillet over medium-low heat and add the bacon. Cook until it’s brown and crisp and most of the fat is rendered.
- Stit in the onion, pepper and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until everything softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar until combined.
- Stir in the baked beans directly from the can. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat. I suggest tasting the beans here and adding more salt, pepper or heat if desired. If you'd like, you can lay a few strips of bacon on top of the beans here too!
- Place the skillet (or transfer to an oven-safe dish) in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until bubbly and syrup. Remove and let cool slightly before serving.
- You can make these ahead of time - cook them in the skillet then let cook to room temperature and cover, placing in the fridge. Bake the next day (or whenever you’re ready!).
- These also freeze well!

These look amazing! My husband will love them :)
i agree… baked beans at all summer events! and dinners! this recipe reminds me SO much of my mom’s baked beans. love love love. thanks for the nostalgia. and i also want to go home and have one on the back porch w/ a grilled hot dog…
These are good beans but there is a heat factor that makes them not completely friendly for everyone in a family.
Agreed! The flavor was great but I couldn’t even finish mine. I am definitely halving the Chipotle chili next time!

These are good. But they are actually better if you bake them in a casserole dish (I top my with raw bacon and know they’re done when the bacon is cooked). I occasionally make crock pot beans for a crowd. But my family loves them so much more when they are actually cooked in the oven.
hi, these are cooked in the oven? not sure what you mean here.
I think she means that she prefers cooking them entirely in the oven with raw bacon instead of using a skillet then moving them to the oven… I think. Lol…
I’ve been wanting to make these beans since I first saw them a couple of weeks ago. We decided to do a full BBQ dinner tonight so made them for a side. They were AMAZING! The flavor is incredible. These are going to be our new go-to beans for BBQs and potlucks. I know I’ll be craving them again in no time!
These sound delicious but we try not to light our oven in the summertime 😔 so can I just cook them on the stove??

These look so good! Which Bush’s Grilln’ Beans do you like? Bourbon and Brown Sugar or Steakhouse Recipe?
Can’t wait to make these!
Don’t listen to anyone else, follow directions exactly. For the best beans you’ll ever have in a 30 min pre prep then 1 hr slow cook. To die for!!!!!
Entirely too spicy! One tablespoon of smoked paprika created an unwelcomed taste.
Smoked paprika is not spicy – are you sure you didn’t grab hot paprika?
Can you use turkey bacon or smoked turkey leg instead of pork bacon. I don’t eat pork, but love good baked blindaeans
You can totally use the turkey bacon, I have and it was still delicious. Changes the flavor a tad but that’s to be expected when using different ingredients. The beauty of cooking is its mostly up for interpretation and inspiration. I know, I’ve been a chef for 10 years!
In previous post I meant baked beans.
So yummy! May have added a touch to much chipotle chili powder. Anything I can add to take some of the heat down a notch?
Add sugar!

Amazing! I used coconut sugar instead of brown sugar. Excellent recipe.

Greetings from Denmark.
Baked Beans isn’t really popular here, but you can definately get them in supermarkets.
This was my first real time trying baked beans, and I love some spice in the food, and man… This recipe is delicious!
Not just for summertime, but also on a cold winters night ;)
Thanks for the recipe!
These are definitely fabulous but as others have said, too hot. I initially questioned those other reviewers’ opinions, me being from Texas I figured they were exaggerating about the heat, but no, definitely too hot. Fortunately we also had a rice dish, and mixing a bit of the rice in really helped calm down our tongues. I used smoked paprika, and very little chili powder. So I’m guessing it was the smoked paprika. Next time will do 1/2 tablespoon. Also, I didn’t have bell pepper so left that out. I did notice that the pictures show red bell peppers which to me are sweeter than green. I poured the mixture in a 9×13 pan to bake, because I love the gooey topping when it’s spread out in a flat dish. Everyone thought they were amazingly good, just too spicy. Looking forward to the next try with less heat and some red bell pepper mixed in!
Hi Jessica,
I have tons of dried beans. What would I need to do in order to sub my dried/soaked/cooked beans into this recipe? It sounds really good. Thank you.

As a new-ish vegetarian I always have my eyes peeled for meatless recipes that can be made quickly and easily. I know technically this recipe has bacon, but I followed the recipe without the bacon and the beans were incredible. So tangy and delicious, I highly recommend them!
Super easy and delicious
I made these for Christmas Eve with my family. Pre made and refrigerated overnight then baked.
A big timesaver when I have BBQ and potato salad and slaw to make.
A little less cider vinegar may be desirealbe for some along with some white sugar, liquid smoke and soy or worcestershire sauce. Taste test as you go until you get it right.

These look very good, and so simple! Just wondering if it’s possible to use a can of regular beans instead of baked beans?
I don’t understand why everyone thinks these are too spicy? There is hardly any Chipotle Chili Powder, and Smoked Paprika is literally not spicy, but smoky and sweet. If you know that you don’t prefer a little kick, just leave the Chipotle out? Because I’ve been cooking southern food a long time and this is by far one of the best baked beans recipe I’ve ever tried. I actually add jalapeño to mine with the sweet onion. And I also add extra paprika, and a little honey. I always use green bell peppers. And even from the diners with sensitive palettes I have not had a complaint yet. Outstanding recipe. Really.
Excellent recipe thank you so much! Made as directed and they were delicious. For those of you that found them too spicy, you can use regular chili powder or ancho chili powder, not spicy at all. I think this is the best baked bean recipe i’ve had so far. Outstanding!
they are sooo good

These were good but being a good southern girl it just didn’t have that southern flair to it. The heat was not bad but it certainly was different than what I’m used to.

I am so glad I came across your page. I was looking for a simple and delicous “semi” homemade recipe and this recipe did not dissapoint. I added more cansof beans therefore I added extra ingredients , but stayed with your recipe. So good. Thank you for sharing your talent…
Hi! So excited to try this recipe. When you mention cooking it the day before, would you cook it completely and then reheat the next day?
Best baked beans ever!
My baked bean recipe is best.
First soak beans over nite
Second in morning drain skin sweet onion put in bottom of bean pitas beans to cover onion,ad 2 or 3 table spoons mustard power, 2/3 cup dark brown sugar, same amount light brown sugar, 2/3 cup molasses , one half diced onion remainder of beans, than add one or two 12 ounce cubes salt pork. Bake in 200 degree over TWENTY FOUR hours. Don’t forget the most important ingredient 3/4 cup real Maple syrup. Long and slow make the best
Oh my gosh Stephen, you use 2/3 cup light brown sugar & another 2/3 cup dark brown sugar and then 3/4 cup maple syrup??? You must have a SUPER sweet tooth; how can you even taste the beans thru all that sugar, yikes!
Jessica, YOUR recipe sounds awesome, can’t wait to try it.
Best baked beans I have ever cooked. Thanks for this recipe!
Hello,
Can I make these the day before and then put them in a crockpot the next day? I saw the slower cooker recipe, but I am just looking to keep it warm. Maybe rebake and then put in a crock pot to keep warm? Thanks!
yes, you can! as long as they are on the warm setting, they should be fine!
I made these for a BBQ and they were a hit! I doubled all the ingredients, EXCEPT the chipotle powder (used 1/2 t. of that), added a chopped jalapeno, and added one extra can of beans (used the grillin beans that were recommended.) They definitely had a touch of heat (spiciness), but everyone liked that (we are in the southwest US, so we have some tolerance for heat!) If you don’t want the heat, leave out the jalapeno and the chipotle powder, or use very little of the powder.
These are the best baked beans I ever ate and my entire life I can’t stop eating them and I’m going to make them a lot they’re wonderful so much flavor
These are amazing! I made them for dinner last night with cornbread muffins and I’m eating them this morning for breakfast. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Made this for my husband to take to work for a group dinner. It was a big hit!
What kind of barbeque sauce would be best to use? Brand? Flavor? Thank you!
Excellent!
Whst is the best way to deal with leftovers? Can I just refrigerate then warm up the next dsy?
