Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.
Let’s talk about raisins.
I know. Gross. I can barely even think of a raisin without cringing.
I’m just not into them. I can’t chew something that is labeled plump and shriveled at the same time. I like the words plump and shriveled to pertain to warm, cuddly and loving grandmas who knit blankets and scarves and drink hot cocoa. Not my food.
Sometimes I accidentally eat a raisin when I shovel handfuls of salty trail mix into my mouth. Other times I accidentally eat a raisin when I’m picking every single chocolate chip out of a bag of trail mix. Occasionally I bite into a warm, gooey cookie expecting to find a melted chocolate chip ribbon, only to discover… a raisin. Then I cry. Ew.
Sometimes I can snack on one or two raisins, but I’m really just… judging them.
Luckily… these cookies have nothing to do with raisins. Lovely, right?
Instead of raisins, I stuffed thick oatmeal cookies with a boatload of chocolate chips. Large and in charge cookies. I underbaked them slightly, resulting in a super chewy and gooey cookie with the perfect chocolate ribbons I crave. Then I ate them. Almost all of them. They complete me.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cups rolled oats
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 1/4 cups chocolate chips
- optional: 1- 2 tablespoons milk if dough is crumbly
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Beat butter and sugars with an electric mixer until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mixing well until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon with the mixer on medium speed. Beat in oats. Mix until dough comes together. Add in 1 tablespoon milk if the dough is crumbly. If dough is still crumbly, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it comes together. Fold in chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Remove dough from fridge and roll into big 1 1/2 inch balls. Set on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Lightly press down on dough to flatten it. Bake at 375 for 9-11 minutes.

I took a second to properly introduce myself this time….
I agree completely! Down with raisins in stuff! Cookies are supposed to be chewy, things in cookies should not be chewy. I love your mason jar with a handle full of milk. It makes me happy.
Thanks Jill! :)
Yes you are right boo rasins!

Dough is in the fridge right now. Please explain to me whyyyy I have to wait 30 minutes before I can put these bad boys in the oven? If its some sort of technical process, I might be able to wait a little more patiently.

I made these last night and the dough was amazing! The tastiness of dough is important to me since I generally bake for other people but eat plenty of dough myself in the process ;)
The only concern I had was the bottoms got darker than I would have liked with chewy cookies. I put parchment paper under the second batch and it helped a little but didn’t fix the problem. Any ideas? Oven temperature? Quality of my baking pan (I used a dark jelly roll pan instead of a shiny metal cookie sheet)?
Thank you for this wonderful recipe…we made it family cooking day and this was one of the recipies…they are delicious. Looking at more of your recipes later this week…Can you give me an idea for children that are very picky…
Thanks
I know exactly how you feel about raisins! Hilarious AND delicious :)
Raisins only belong in a little red box. NEVER in oatmeal cookies :-) and NEVER is something cooked. Ewww!
I grew up on _Oatmeal Chocolate Chip_ cookies as my mom’s standard go-to cookie. They are mine now. All the teachers at my kids elementary school know about “The Hunters Cookies”… (also the Cinnamon Rolls and ANZAC biscuits but that’s another story) because all of my 4 kids teachers get cookies through out the year. In fact, I’ll be baking up a huge batch to take to a BBQ/gathering tonight with several soldiers from Germany that are visiting with my DH’s military unit.

Jessica, I <3 you! These cookies are AMAZING.
Thank you, Jessica! I’ve been trying for weeks to impress someone with my ‘baking skills’ and these finally did the trick! First, I ate most of them – for taste testing purposes, of course. Then he said they were probably the best cookie he’d ever had. So, thank you :)
Great to hear! Thank you for reading!!

Your photos are amazing. I am just finished mixing up your recipe and now I am anxiously waiting by the fridge.
Thank you Laura! Let me know how they are. :)
Yes tell us how they turn out, we are sure they will be delightful
These look so good, does the cookie sheet need to be greased?
I may or may not have just whipped up a batch of dough.
Nope, not cookies.
Just dough.
I’ll be here, in my living room, watching reruns, holding a spoon ;)
Hands down best oatmeal cookies I ever had. Very chewy and so very delicious.
yummy!
very yummy!!

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about raisins. It completely ruins my day when I get tricked into eating one. Completely gross! I believe all raisins should be replaced with chocolate chips. It’s the first step toward world peace.
WHAT! Raisins make the world a better place! How could you! They are very good! This recipe hits the spot though

Oh, finally someone understands me about raisins!
I always manage to get some raised (pun now intended…) eyebrows when i say they’re creepy…
RAISINS ARE GOOD!
I’m raisin (Pun intended) against the clock to finish these cookies in time for the ball I’m bringing them too. Yes your cookies will soon be famous.

I’m a fellow raisin hater.
I’ve had these bookmarked since you posted them and I finally made them today. I only got 14 cookies (probably due to dough eating :-)) and they are divine. They’re perfectly chewy and puffy!
Thanks for making such reliably successful and delicious recipes.
Oh my gosh, these cookies are amazing. At first I was nervous about the amount of cinnamon that was called for, but I put it all in and I’m glad it did. These cookies are delicious and they are even good breakfast cookies especially with my coffee! (not like I just ate one for breakfast or anything…)
Just tried out this recipe and added both dark and white chocolate chips – came out so great!
Thanks!
I have made these cookies quite a few times in the last few months and they are perfect every time! I love knowing that they will absolutely turn out! Today I was looking at another oatmeal cookie recipe and then I was… why mess with something good when I know I have a fail-proof recipe here? :-) Thanks for all your amazing recipes, your good sense of humor and the inspiration you are!

Just made these cookies as a thank you gift. I may or may not had a couple of cookies for myself…how selfish, I know:) The cinnamon adds such a nice touch. I didn’t have any chocolate chips on hand, but my brother just won 12 bars of hersheys bars in a contest, so instead I put a square of hersheys chocolate in the middle of the cookies…sooo gooey and yummy!

I just made these for my boyfriend before he goes away for a couple weeks. They’re fantastic. I used old fashion oats though, and they were extremely yummy. Love all the chocolate chips. :)
I just happened to stumble upon this recipe as my husband was begging for Christmas cookies while we put up our Christmas tree! These are absolutely incredible. My husband and I both agree that they are the best cookies we’ve had in a very long time! What a wonderful recipe! Thanks for sharing!
I made these two weeks ago and forgot to tell you how much I loved them! I made one small tweak of toasting unsweetened coconut flakes and adding those in… yum! This is such an awesome recipe AND the dough is delicious. Just a warning.

Would it be okay to switch the flour to whole wheat flour?
They will probably be really dry and crumbly. I’d suggest doing 50/50 all-purpose and whole wheat before all whole wheat.

I don’t share everyone’s disdain for raisins, I do like them in cookies as well as other things. But sometimes you want something different and this looks like a great recipe, which I will definitely try.

The cinnamon was the perfect touch! Omg! It put the classic oatmeal chocolate chip cookie on another level!
I dont know what I did wrong, but my cookies turn out flatter than a pancake! what did I do wrong?
Usually when something like that happens it’s because of the butter temperature (it should be no warmer than room temp) or maybe even expired baking powder/soda? Are you sure you used powder and not soda?
